off to a bad start
From ENVIRONMENTAL GRAFFITI:
The tradition of fasting for Lent has a long history in the Christian church. These days, it’s been modernized somewhat. Most churchgoers aren’t hardcore ascetics willing to forego food or water. It is still fairly common, however, for someone to give up some cherished food or activity for forty days to enhance their spiritual lives and understanding. In many cases one gives up chocolate or smoking as their “fast”. Officials in the Church of England, however, are advising a very different kind of “fast” during Lent. James Jones and Richard Chartres, the bishops of Liverpool and London respectively, have joined forces with development agency Tearfund to help promote a “carbon fast” among church members during the upcoming period.
COMMENT: And to kick it off, in style, vicars all over the country will be setting fire to last year's palm crosses. Holy smoke and damn the torpedos.

Considering the amount of carbon produced in growing food and shipping it across the country/world to you, wouldn't becoming one of those "hardcore ascetics willing to forego food" be a pretty effective method of "carbon fasting"?
I don't know what you're on about, Adam. I get all my food from the supermarket down the road - not exactly the other side of the world, is it?
So as not to contribute to greenhouse gasses, I shall refrain from red beans.
Will the Bishops of Liverpool and London then be eating hydrosilicon aliments for the season?
Tasteless but crunchy!

And when the sign proclaims the fresh fruit or vegetable, normally out of season, from Chile or Ecuador, Sacerdote Loco just assumed that they were country villages of which he just hadn't heard.
Sacerdote Loco! Love it!
Turn one's back on supermarkets(especially Tesco). Support local, home-grown, small shops (yes - they do still exist if one looks carefully)and buy local produce.
Support the UK farming industry (ideally the organic sector) thus reducing our carbon footprint through the shipping of NZ lamb, Argentine beef, Australian wines etc.
Pound for pound, farmers' markets are good value for money!
