the daily dog

From THE MARINE CORPS TIMES:

A San Diego-based Marine major was reunited Saturday with one of his closest war buddies — a 2-year-old dog named Nubs.

Nubs greeted Maj. Brian Dennis at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar when the fighter pilot returned from Iraq. It was the first time the two were together since Dennis' family and close friends helped raise $3,500 to fly the dog to San Diego about a month ago. Nubs wasn't allowed to stay on base in Iraq.

Dennis, 36, of St. Pete Beach, Fla., had spotted the mongrel dog while on patrol in Anbar province and later nursed the animal back to health after finding him stabbed with a screwdriver.

He named the dog Nubs after learning someone cut the ears off believing it would make the dog more aggressive and alert.

COMMENT: For showing compassion above the call of duty, Major Dennis is our

BRICK OF THE DAY

Big soppy soldier.

This is such a happy/sad story. For every one person who stabs a dog with a screwdriver and cuts off its ears I pray there are a thousand Maj. Brian Dennis' who will save the dogs. I pray that somehow these people change the hearts of those who would harm animals. I pray this bloody, stupid war is over soon.

I'd rather make a friend than an enemy. Red, I hope you at least read my comment on your blog. Reaching out here in friendship.

MP--great story.

On a slightly different note...are you willing to provide dog training advice to members of your online "pack"? I'm having some difficulties convincing Jasper to drop things he isn't supposed to have in his mouth...and I think that stabbing him with a screwdriver or chopping off his ears are not the ideal way to get through to him. (Asshats---how can you DO that to a dog??!?!?)

Grace---if you are reading, I'd love to have you weigh in too...how is Chase doing these days?

Don't forget the folks who raised the money to get the dog back to the US. They are indeed bricks, too.

There's a special layer of Purgatory reserved for all dog abusers. (I think they get to experience what it feels like to have their ears cut off...)

aaaaaw...I just love this!

We hear of so many of war's hellish stories: Winter Soldier testimonies of soldiers taking photos of their human "kill" in Iraq, etc. This is heart-warming and I thank you for telling us about it.

Pagan Sphinx

P.S.
The two friends are both very handsome, aren't they? :-)

That's "Big soppy Marine", MP (since they're usually "the tip of the spear" of the World's Police Force, you really need to keep this straight *g*).

JCF, joining in the general Awwwww, Nubs Boy! :-)

It may well be the only humane memory the Major brings back from Iraq.

War is like that; people who do the most terrible things are also capable of the most wonderful kindness. Perhaps especially so; there's something about enduring what you have to do in war that makes even the dullest want to live a little better henceforth.

The exceptions are more plentiful higher up the food chain: "in the rear with the gear."

While I'm not an advocate for a US presence in Iraq and know there are many stories of atrocities yet to be revealed, it should be noted that in contrast, there are many stories of decency that come out of this horror. The media makes some attempt to make them known, but they're generally not "big" stories, so are lost to public awareness. I personally know very "ordinary" people, men and women, who have done the "extraordinary."

Way to go Dennis!

BP: I did see the comment but haven't figured out a proper response, so PBPGIFWMY.

For those who are unfamiliar it means Please Be Patient God Isn't Finished With Me Yet.

I keep telling myself that.

PS: What Ellie said!!

Johnieb, you have reminded me of a strange experience I had in Belfast a couple of summers ago.

"War is like that; people who do the most terrible things are also capable of the most wonderful kindness."

Ed and I were on a cruise that went around to various places in Ireland and then on to Norway and the fjords. One of the Wolves in my Delphi forum is an Anglican priest with a parish in Belfast. He met the ship and gave us an amazing tour of the area, including introducing us to one of the former Ulster bad guys (now working with our friend to try to ease the tensions that are still there just under the surface). When he left, our friend told us that he'd seen the man stand in the middle of traffic to protect a dog crossing the street. He also murdered people just because they were Catholic.

I am told, Doxy, that a lighted cigarette applied to Jasper's butt will almost certainly achieve the desired result. An index finger or thumb forcefully inserted is nearly as effective, if you're fastidious about these things.

Seriously, tho', is this a small number of things that he regards as his own and regularly grabs and hangs on to, or is just about anything in the house fair game?
