madpriest's thought of the day

"INCLUSIVE" What does that mean?

It could mean anything. It could mean inclusive of woodworm, which is not a good idea in any church.

Also, it's snobby. You say to Joe Public that you're an inclusive Christian he's going to think you're all la di da. We need something snappy if we're going to win the propaganda war.

And my suggestion is BIG CHURCH. And our motto:

BIG GOD

BIG HEARTS

BIG CHURCH

The Lakota always called God the Great Everywhere Spirit.
Maybe we need the Great Everywhere Church.

But leave "Mega" out of it. I don't want to attend a stinkin' megachurch.

Look. Stop it, immediately!!!
The trouble with intelligent people they have to complicate everything - and then they wonder why the plebs don't get it.
BIG
Three letters - simple.
And "everywhere" is so new agey.

If we follow the Jewish tradition of not using vowels it would be the "BG Church" which is only two letters.

Silly Priest! These things have to be run through committee! Priest in charge, my ass!

I'm not on board with this; it sounds too much like the Methodists' "Open Hearts, Open Minds, Open Doors." Too mooshy and feel-goody. Your proposal has just died in committee.

How about, "Church of the All Out Are In Free?"

I like it.
A Lot.
Simple. To the point. Should also be true.

Contrarian here rather likes the "Great Everywhere." It might sound new agey to urban dwellers but to invoke the Great Plains is something else.

In any event, all I can think of in connection with Big is Big Love which is not what I'd really like to associate with church (Harry Dean Stanton might even give Pope Benedict a run for his money).

But I agree that just about anything but "inclusive" would be a vast improvement. "Big" certainly is in the spirit of K.I.S.S.

The "Great Everywhere" was good enough for Red Cloud and Crazy Horse, and whatever they were, they weren't no hippies. Maybe the Great Mad One on the Tyne is just afraid of the Sundance Ritual.
Though I could imagine some over there might like it.

Well, Counterlight, he might go for it if we don't have to look each other in the eye....

KJ, you're right about the committeeL I can't believe I forgot that. (After the Mad One's post several weeks ago about the Lutheran Women Scheduling 2008 Meetings, I thought I'd give up Meetings for Lent -- but you just can't BE an Anglican woman and do that.)

But your suggestion of the Church of the All Out Are in Free made me realize -- we forgot something else. I looked at that and tried to figure out what it anagrammed -- and it doesn't. Isn't it Canon Law that all new Anglican stuff has to have an easy-to-remember anagram?

Interesting. I think back to my 20some years in churchless exile and what drew me to my church 3 years ago. I had often said, "There isn't a church big enough to hold me." Well, totally by happenstance and 6 years of two good friends casually inviting me to come at Easter/Christmas/when the string quartet played/whatever, I gave in to get them off my back...and was hooked. It WAS "The little church that was big enough for me."

So size does matter after all...

I like it... simple and you don't have to read to much or consult a dictionary

I like that much better than the American United Methodist Church's:

Open Hearts
Open Minds
Open Doors

HA--not experienced in too many places.

RE: Counterlight @ 23:50

Yup.

OK so how about "Allchurch?"

OK yes it is a spin on "Allfather" and "Allmother" but it means ALL.

And it's not new-agey at all. In fact, New Agers run screaming from anything to do with Allfather and the other Aesir and Vanir.

See, new-agey uses words like "universal" or "cosmic." Not sure if "catholic" fits in with that, considering what "catholic" means. Probably not; most New Agers wouldn't associate the word "catholic" with "universal."

How can the Methody's use that slogan when they don't allow partnered gay clergy?
