an apology to the american people
I am so, so sorry. I seem to have killed off an American icon.
Late on Friday I needed an image of Moses for a joke and, understandably, I chose one of Charlton Heston in his defining performance as the prophet.
Less than twenty four hours later he is dead. I cannot apologise too much. I know how much he meant to you all.
Mind you, had I known I had this power I could have done it years ago, which may have resulted in a few less high school massacres and drive by shootings.

I am laughing so hard right now- with all due respect to the dead - that my own longevity may be in question.
As I click into these pages, I am listening to the BBC World Service on the radio and of course the synchronicity of hearing that Heston had died and seeing you post simultaneously almost killed me.
There are going to be a lot of "cold dead hands" jokes on the intertubes today.
Can I please send you a few pictures of some other people whom we would all appreciate you using in photoshop jokes?
Stop it, alcibiades! This is how rumours start and then get out of hand. Next thing I know I'll have the C.I.A. round here trying to force me into some top secret, remote viewing project!
Eh.
Ramon Novarro was the real Ben Hur.
That movie about Michelangelo was really awful.
The Ten Commandments was very silly, but also a lot of fun, especially the nylon wig and beard he wore as Moses.
"Planet of the Apes" was his best movie. How many times have I wanted to say, "God damn 'em to hell!"
I won't mention Nixon, Reagan, and the NRA business.
Rest in Peace.
MP, everything I've always heard or read seemed to indicate that Mr. Heston had a pretty good sense of humor, so I think he'd appreciate the fun irony of it all.
Well spoken, Alcibiades! It's tempting, isn't it?
I recently watched Judgment at Nuremburg - and Richard Widmark died. Last week I watched Topkapi and Jules Dassin gave it up.
I don't have any Heston films, so what gives here? It must be spite.
Oh, and I agree with Counterlight, Navarro WAS Ben Hur!
Someone, finally, took that gun his "cold, dead hands”. One down .....
[This, for UK readers, concerns Heston's recent (1998-2003) presidency of the National Rifle Association.]
Thank you lapin, for getting the cold-dead-hand-roll started!
Sorry Fran! I only now saw your earlier post. Thought I was first in the pool with that one.
Heston used to be nice eye candy, but his acting was always so-so. May the man rest in peace.

Kirk,
You've clearly never seen "Bowling for Columbine" (though admittedly, the Alzheimers may have been in control by then)
CH, RIP...
Um, he died?
I didn't see mention of it this morning on CNN, but I've been out of the house most of this afternoon.
Well.
That sucks.
No, MadPriest, you didn't kill him, Alzheimers did.
It's not a quick way to die, and it's very hard on the people that love you...
He stood up for what he believed in. That's part of what has made the American experiment a holy enterprise.
Jcf, as a rural person and owner of many guns, but a liberal in darn near everything else, I get a little tired of the demonization of it all. You CAN be a decent human being and a vocal gun owner at the same time. But I'm not going there any further than I just did.
And yes, I have seen Bowling for Columbine. It didn't hold my interest any more than any other of Michael Moore's documentaries have. I just find his style of documentary tedious, whether he's talking about health care, George W., Iraq, or guns.
You can just stow the "Guns having anything to do with Alzheimer's" stuff too, since I am a major caregiver for someone in my extended family with dementia and I just had to put him in assisted living this past month. I'm just not in the mood and I am not going there, either.
Told my partner, Kenn, I want to g volunteer to be the one to take his gun from his cold dead hand. (with all due respect for the dead);
Kirk...my prayers for your family, I know Alzheimers is hard and have sympathy even for Mr. Heston and his family.
I grew up in a rural community and my father hunted in part to put meat on the table. Most progressive people have nothing against people owning hunting rifles and shot guns...I personally believe all hand guns should be illegal in this country...we have one of the highest homicide rates from guns in the world...and don't bother with the contitional thing...its about state's rights to have guns stock piled in case the British show up....has nothing to do with peoples personal right to own semi-automatic weapons....which is what the NRA and the late Mr. Heston are defending...they have the blood of many innocent people on their hands

Sorry, KirkE, we were joking largely because Heston just went WAAAAAAY over the top with the NRA stuff. Heston was usually WAY over the top in his acting in the first place. NRA is WAAAAAAAAAAAY over the top, and doesn't represent the actual sport hunter as much as it represents the male couch potato (with or without gun) who has power fantasies. Real gunowners know their gun safety, don't have issues with laws requiring proper storage and requiring gun locks in situations when kids are around. And as for collecting - nothing wrong, as long as they are stowed away. Real hunters don't use semi- or fully- automatics to bring down deer.
