"how on earth did he get the job?"
quote of the day

“The question the Church is struggling with is: is an active homosexual lifestyle compatible with the gospel?” There was no clear cut answer to that question, he said.

I suppose it's a step forward that he can call the answer less than clear cut, but I REALLY hate the term "active homosexual lifestyle". (Did I say REALLY enough?) It's one of those clinical/dehumanizing terms.

"active homosexual lifestyle".
Does this mean that really lazy homosexuals can engage in as much sex as they can be bothered with?

Have you noticed that they never say "Is bombing innocent civilians compatible with the gospel?" or "Is an active military lifestyle compatible with the gospel?" or "Is rape compatible with the gospel?" or "Is a racist lifestyle compatible with the gospel?" or "Is corporate greed compatible with the gospel?"

ToujoursDan, agreed! For heaven's (and earth's) sake, we're talking humans here, not "lifestyles."

Though as usual, the MadPriest Humorous Hermeneutic adds a new perspective to things.

I was only trying to give KJ a get out

This one-way understanding that doesn't leave the non-homosexual portions of the Church open to scrutiny needs to end. The fact that so many gay and lesbian and trans teens prostitute themselves on the streets of SF to survive because their good "Christian" family booted them out holds the entire Body of Christ up for examination. This portion of the Church too is under scrutiny, under the judgment of God in light of the question the Archbishop asks. I pose the corollary thusly:

“The question the non-homosexual portions of the Church are struggling with is: is our present treatment of homosexual brothers and sisters compatible with the gospel?” There was no clear cut answer to that question, he said.

I feel this is a little unkind. The full transcript of the interview is at http://www.abc.net.au/local/stories/2008/07/04/2294716.htm

++Aspinall is trying to walk a thin line. I wish he would be more open but feel he is sympathetic to our views. Remember the Primate of Australia is just a chairman and has almost no power to intervene in other dioceses than his own (Brisbane)

True Brian. But it was an incredibly crass thing to say and if he is the chairman then the least he can do is choose his words carefully. He knows what offends people and if he doesn't then he should let somebody else do the talking.

I think that my getting up before dawn to run, working for myself, paying taxes, volunteering, buying bacon and frying it up in a pan (Though I can no longer eat it.), and expressing the wiener dog's anal glands on a weekly basis, precludes me from qualifying as leading a lazy homosexual lifestyle. Maybe when I retire.

Meanwhile, I shall wait with bated breath as the church struggles with determining if I'm Gospel compatible.
