Sex & God & Rock & Roll
All Hail El Shoppissimo![I commented on Sir Elton, over at Episcopal Cafe--- essentially, someone creating Jesus in their own image? So what else is new? (Like Elton's critics haven't done the same, only worse?)]
the suggestion that Jesus was gay is not exactly new - Aeldred of Rievaulx said it in the 12th century, for instance (according to my copy of the Penguin Book of Homosexual Verse). The same book tells me that Anselm, Archbishop of Canterbury (1093-1109), was in love with Gundulf, Bishop of Rochester, to whom he wrote deeply felt love letters, and who was also madly in love with him. It seems likely the two were having it off with each other. This is not certain, but Anselm did quash the first attempt to pass anti-homosexual legislation, which he had the power to do, on the grounds, he said, that it was a popular practice and that no one cared. I always rather wistfully hoped when Nazir-Ali was Bishop of Rochester that he and the present ABC might follow the fine example set by these previous incumbents of their posts and leap in the sack with each other, but sadly this appears unlikely to happen any time soon.Nice cartoon, MP.
