Sex & God & Rock & Roll
There will be dancing in the streets....of course it is being immediately appealed, so absolutely nothing will change.yet.
good news, for now - hopefully in the long run it can only go one way.
Woot!! Bishop Bruno of Los Angeles quickly issued a positive statement (of course):The response from the Episcopal Diocese of Los Angeles to the announcement Wednesday (Aug. 4) that a federal judge had overturned California's Proposition 8 was swift and celebratory. "Justice is advancing thanks to today's ruling affirming Californians' constitutional right to marriage in faithful, same-gender relationships," Bishop J. Jon Bruno said in an official statement. The Episcopal Church, which has in recent years become one of the Christian denominations most supportive of gay and lesbian rights, has been vocal in its opposition to Proposition 8. On November 5, 2008, after California voters initially passed the ban on same-sex marriage, Bishop Bruno wrote, "Proposition 8 is a lamentable expression of fear-based discrimination that attempts to deny the constitutional rights of some Californians on the basis of sexual orientation. It is only a matter of time before its narrow constraints are ultimately nullified by the courts and our citizens' own increasing knowledge about the diversity of God's creation." http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/08/04/la-bishop-issues-statemen_n_671091.html--sheila--
Very happy news, eh? I've been drinking bubbly since I got home from work this evening.
Wooeffinhoo! This is me, dancing in the street in front of IT and BP's house.
IT, something has changed for the better. Now the bigots are on the defensive!FWIWjimB
Hell Yeah!I've heard GREAT things about the decision (Rachel Maddow said "It's better than any novel you're reading").The decision contains a HUGE amount of findings-of-fact---which are traditionally much less often overturned. Moreover, one legal analyst called it a "love-letter to Anthony Kennedy" (he who is The Swing Vote on the current Supreme Court), quoting amply from Kennedy's previous decisions [esp. Romer v Evans (overturning Colorado's anti-gay law), and Lawrence v Texas (overturning Texas's---and all remaining---sodomy laws)].Very, very promising. Now, let's get that stay lifted, and let the MARRYING BEGIN AGAIN!!!! :-D
Party after Friday, when the stay decision is expected.
IT - true but a small step toward victory! And it tastes good! Wish I was back in San Francisco, celebrating or with my daughter and daughter-in-law in Santa Barbara, where it is not nearly as much fun to celebrate, comparatively! They would agree.
Doing a little jig here myself!
Even though I have no understanding of the desire to marry someone of either sex, I am very happy for you that do, appeal or not.
It has been in the wings for a wile, hasn't it? a very long while...
