Sex & God & Rock & Roll
Hell hath no fury......well he does wear a frock.
Carn George! Sic it to 'em.
Did they miss the part about being humble servants of God? To be consistent, priests serve the people, so bishops should serve the priests. Each level is greater call to responsibility and maturity in Christ. The idea of Bishops as nobles to be supported by the peasants is absurd, especially when the same funds can be applied not only to the ministry of parishioners but also to charity and mission. Who will they get to pay for all of this nonsense as parishes scale back or close and efforts to make the church relevant are absent or underfunded?
No, he's not saying anything many others have been saying for years now. One does wonder if his spleen may not have been so vented were it not for his being passed over for preferrment.
To clarify, the bishops (should also be seen as) supporting the laity but in a more generalized way and working through the priests who have a more specific and direct connection. And the laity also server -- the poor, the unwanted, the undesirable. Or maybe Jesus got that whole "the first shall be last and the last shall be first" deal mixed up.
Oh, but aren't they the "princes" of the church?
Well, considering the gospel message there seems to be a preferential option for paupers over princes. But that is only for those concerned, you know, about being Christ-like. ;)
But, if the bishops' princely living causes others to live poorly, then aren't they actually doing the poor a favor by making them prime candidates for blessing?
