MADPRIEST'S BOG-STANDARD SERMON FOR
MOTHERING SUNDAY (NOT MOTHERS' DAY)

Today is Mothering Sunday. Note - Mothering Sunday not Mother’s day. Mother’s Day is a recent American invention started at the beginning of this century that occurs on the second Sunday of May each year in the States. Our Mothering Sunday is a much older institution which goes back into the depths of pre-history. Our pagan ancestors had a high regard for motherhood due to its importance in the cycle of life and this regard was reflected in their worship of female gods. In many religions throughout the world, the mother god was seen as the main god, and in almost all religions she was seen as a god to be offered special worship. Gifts would be taken to the shrines of the Mother of the Gods and this custom continued after the Christianisation of the old religions, although the gifts were then laid at the altar of Mother Church rather than the altars of the pagan goddess. Gradually this custom became more formalised and the fourth Sunday of Lent was adopted as Mothering Sunday. Mother Church started to share the limelight of the festival with human mothers and the day became an occasion when married men and women would return to their mothers for the day bringing them gifts to emphasise the fact that the connection between mother and child was still there even though they were physically separated by marriage. In many regions it was the time when simnel cakes would be baked and given as presents, and the custom continued in this country, especially in the west, even during the era of puritanism when many festivals of the Church were suppressed. In the East End of London and in some country parishes it became the custom on Mothering Sunday for the children of the parish to bring bunches of violets to church to be blessed at the altar after which they would then be given to the mothers sitting in the pews. This custom has since been adapted in some form or another in many, if not most, of our churches.

But why is Mothering Sunday such an enduring custom? I think that the answer lies right back at the beginning of the festival in its pagan roots. Mothering Sunday is primarily a celebration of that which is feminine, hence the concentration on motherhood. Our pagan ancestors understood the importance of the feminine in the scheme of things and this understanding led to the creation of female deities. Looking at the world, and the balance between male and female, our forebears projected their world view onto their gods, and because they had many gods, they could have both male and female gods. Of course, this could not be done in the monotheistic religions, the religions, such as Judaism, which only had one god. In such religions all the attributes of godliness had to be included within the personality of just one god. In a fair world this would have meant that the understanding of God would have been of a deity who was both male and female or neither. Unfortunately, human projection of their own society onto the society of the godhead, meant that in a predominantly patriarchal society, God came to be seen as predominantly patriarchal himself . God was seen as male. A full blooded, dominant, aggressive male at that.

However, the need for a balance in the human understanding of the divine nature of God, meant that there was never complete acceptance of a completely male God. Even in Judaism, that most male dominated of religions, there can be found hints of femininity within God’s personality. In the book of Isaiah God says, “For a long time I have held my peace, I have kept still and restrained myself; now I will cry out like a woman in labour, I will gasp and pant,” and elsewhere, “ For thus says the LORD: I will extend prosperity to her like a river, and the wealth of the nations like an overflowing stream; and you shall nurse and be carried on her arm, and dandled on her knees. As a mother comforts her child, so I will comfort you; you shall be comforted in Jerusalem.” In Psalm 131 we hear the psalmist say, ‘But I have calmed and quieted my soul, like a weaned child with its mother; my soul is like the weaned child that is with me. O Israel, hope in the LORD from this time on and forevermore.”

More important than these brief references was the Old Testament understanding of the Wisdom of God. Wisdom is seen in the Old Testament as one of the primary characteristics of God and is almost regarded as a separate person within the godhead, and wisdom in this respect is most definitely female. For example, Wisdom, chapter nine, states,

“With you is wisdom, she who knows your works and was present when you made the world; she understands what is pleasing in your sight and what is right according to your commandments. Send her forth from the holy heavens, and from the throne of your glory send her, that she may labour at my side, and that I may learn what is pleasing to you. For she knows and understands all things, and she will guide me wisely in my actions and guard me with her glory.”

It is interesting to note that the Egyptian god of wisdom was the great goddess, Isis, herself. The people of the Middle East definitely believed that wisdom was very much a female characteristic. It is even more interesting to note that, within Christianity, the Wisdom of God becomes the Word of God, and the Word of God becomes the Son of God in his incarnation as Jesus Christ. We have a situation where the preexistence of Jesus within God is not of necessity male. This multi-gendered God became man. Genderwise, the Word was something else before becoming man. That is an important point for us to remember.

But what about Jesus, the man? What did he have to say about the nature of God?

Firstly, Jesus affirms the maleness of God, over and over again. Jesus refers to God as his father; he prays to God, his father. There is no doubt that the language Jesus uses indicates a masculine deity. However, the personality that Jesus attributes to God, God's caring, forgiving nature, God's physical and emotional closeness to God's children is not archetypical male. Furthermore, I think this scares the male hierarchy of the church. So much so that they took all the female attributes Jesus said God the Father had and put them on Mary, the mother of Jesus. The cult of the Virgin Mary is in reality a displaced reverence for the feminine in God as revealed to us by Jesus Christ.

And, although Jesus was physically a man we must be very careful not to confuse this mere accidental with the real nature of the Word incarnate. When God became man in Jesus Christ he took on both the limitations of human language and the limitations of the human culture of the time. No human language can fully describe God, it can only give us a very limited view of our creator. Jesus had to use human language and so he had to give God a gender because the conventions of human language demanded it. That is why Jesus did not restrict his teaching to the spoken word alone. He preached the good news about God through action, through the things he did, and when he did speak about God it was often in parables that were meant to be understood within the heart rather than just within the mind. Within these parables, parables such as the one about the prodigal son, we see a God who is not restricted by the stereotypical ideas of maleness current at the time. God is loving of his children, he embraces them like a mother embraces her children, and we see this also in Jesus, in his gentleness, in the way he deals with people. Within Christ and within Christ’s understanding of God there is a balance between the male and the female. There is the necessary maleness of Jesus overturning the tables in the Temple, but there is also the gentle Jesus, calling the children to him.

To a very large extent Jesus broke free from the bondage of the male dominated society of his time. The way he related to women broke down barriers and he ignored the taboos of his era by conversing with women and by having women within his circle of disciples. Even though the New Testament was written by men we still catch glimpses of just how much of a revolution Jesus preached in respect of the way that men should treat women. It also seems that this revolution carried on in to the early church with women having positions of importance within the new movement. Women were evangelists, prophets and deacons. There is no doubt that some women in the early church did the jobs that we would now restrict to the ordained priesthood. However, it was not long before men imposed themselves and their systems on the new Church, and a strict maleness on the nature of God.

Not that everybody agreed with this. Throughout history people have challenged the assumption of God’s maleness. I think we see this in two different ways. Firstly within the writings of certain mystics, especially during the mediaeval period. Writers such as our own Julian of Norwich who wrote many passages about the motherhood of both God the Father and God the Son. For example, in her ‘Revelations’ she wrote that, “God is the true Father and Mother of nature.... God almighty is our loving Father, and God all wisdom is our loving Mother.”

Then there was Mechtild who wrote, “God is not only fatherly. God is also mother who lifts her loved child from the ground to her knee. The Trinity is like a mother’s cloak wherein the child finds a home and lays its head on the maternal breast.”

And Meister Eckhart acknowledged the creative imperative of God when he wrote, “What does God do all day long? God gives birth. From all eternity God lies on a maternity bed giving birth.”

However, if we really want to see the persistence of the idea of the motherhood of God we need to look at popular culture within the Church, in particular at the cult of the Virgin Mary within much of that Church. However, the problem with the cult of the Virgin Mary is that it is, in many ways, idolatrous. Mary is Theotokos, the God Bearer, but she is not God. She is the mother of our Lord, but her role in our salvation stops there, she is not a co-redemptorist with her son. Mary is venerated by many over and above what is really acceptable. I think this is because there is a need among ordinary Christians to show their love for the motherly qualities of God. The answer to this problem is for the Church to accept and understand these motherly qualities that are within God, so that there is no need to invent another god. And, if we do that we allow Mary to be, for us, her true self and that, as an example of true faith, will be of far more use to us than she will ever be turning up on pieces of toast and repeating our prayers to God when God has already heard them straight from our hearts and lips.

Mary's journey was a painful one. It was also one of tremendous grace. She ministered, she watched, she prayed, she followed. She recognised her role and did not try to make it something else. And so she never got in God's way but went on enabling his will to be done, doing her part to make straight his paths. Mary gives us a model for any relationship as much as for motherhood. Truly to love someone is to enable them to grow and to become the person God intended them to be. It is about encouraging them to reach their potential, even if that means they cannot be exactly what - or where - you want them to be. It is about giving them space to become themselves. It is always about letting go; being there, but recognising when it is necessary for you to stand back.

This is, of course, exactly the way that God treats us. Like a mother he comforts us when we run to him. Like a mother he grieves for us when we obstinately ignore him and go our own ways. Like a mother he welcomes us back.

God is both Mother and Father. He is both male and female. We know this to be true because we are told that it is true right at the beginning of the Bible. In the book of Genesis it clearly states:

“So God created humankind in God's image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.”

For that statement to be true then the image of God must contain both a male and a female aspect.

Perhaps if we accepted the ambiguity of the nature of God, then we could accept the ambiguity of our own natures, and move towards a more balanced society where nobody is excluded because of their sexuality. Where the Church, the bride of Christ, gives equal merit to all God’s creatures whatever their gender, whatever their sexual identity. Where women can celebrate the Fatherhood of God because it is a true fatherhood and where men can celebrate the Motherhood of God because it is a true motherhood.

GIRL IN SUIT LAUNCHES SUIT BECAUSE HER SUITOR WAS THE WRONG SUIT TO SUIT STUFFED SHIRTS

From THE TORONTO SUN:

All she wanted to do was take her girlfriend to the prom like any other gay American high-schooler. But after her Mississippi high school cancelled prom rather than allow Constance McMillen and her girlfriend to attend as a couple, the American Civil Liberties Union stepped in Thursday to file a lawsuit against the school.

The ALCU alleges the actions of Itawamba Agricultural High School in Fulton, Miss., are a violation of the student's right to freedom of expression, and has asked the U.S. District Court in the state to reinstate the prom.

“All I wanted was the same chance to enjoy my prom night like any other student,” McMillen, 18, said in an ALCU release Thursday. “
But my school would rather hurt all the students than treat everyone fairly."

The ACLU says the First Amendment in the U.S. Constitution guarantees students’ right to bring same-sex dates to school dances, and cites previous court rulings that determined other parties’ objections don’t justify censorship. Furthermore the school further violated McMillen’s free expression rights by telling her that she couldn't wear a tuxedo to the prom.

A
FACEBOOK PAGE to support McMillen's cause had attracted 7,400 fans as of Thursday afternoon.

COMMENT: For goodness sake, the woman is 18 years old! Look, I try. I really do try my damned hardest. But sometimes I just don't get the USA. Americans have taken the noble concept of freedom and perverted it until it means nothing more than a right to carry guns. They have somehow been been conned into giving up real freedom by being brainwashed into believing absolute freedom of speech is more important than physical, moral freedom. In Europe we have always concentrated on achieving moral freedom because we know that if you have moral freedom then freedom of speech just happens as an automatic consequence. If you allow people to act freely then you cannot stop them speaking freely. But if you allow people freedom of speech you can still stop them acting freely. All the major societal problems in US history have been caused by the fact that freedom of speech is regarded as more important than moral freedom. Think about it and you will see I am right.

ROMAN CATHOLIC ARCHBISHOP BREAKS RANKS

From THE TELEGRAPH:

The head of the Catholic Church in Austria said the possible reasons behind sex abuse crises which have hit Austria, Germany, Ireland and the Netherlands in recent weeks should be subjected to "unflinching examination". In an article for an in-house Church magazine, Christoph Schönborn, the Archbishop of Vienna, called for a debate on celibacy, as the Vatican struggles to address a growing sex abuse crisis. He said it was time to examine "the issue of priest celibacy and the issue of personality development. It requires a great deal of honesty, both on the part of the Church and of society as a whole." His office later put out a "clarification" – reportedly under pressure from the Holy See – saying that the archbishop was "in no way seeking to question the Catholic Church's celibacy rule."

A Vatican expert, Bruno Bartoloni, said that Cardinal Schönborn was warning that "paedophilia can reflect the frustration of those priests who are not at ease with being celibate."

The Vatican's official newspaper, Osservatore Romano, added fuel to the debate with a front-page article suggesting that the "masculine conspiracy of silence" could be overcome if nuns and laywomen played a more prominent role in the Church.

But the Vatican insisted that the principle of celibacy was not open to negotiation.

COMMENT: Nuns and laywomen have been helping "those priests who are not at ease with being celibate" ever since the Roman Catholic hierarchy came up with the silly rule. What Cardinal Schönborn is calling for is honesty and openness, something the Roman Catholic hierarchy have had huge problems with even longer than they have had the silly celibacy rule.

The Primate of the Anglican Communion in Nigeria, Peter Akinola, has decried the quest for recognition in churches and advised Christians to refrain from such negative tendencies.

In his sermon at the dedication of St. Andrew’s Ultra Modern Church, Trans-Ekulu, Enugu, on Wednesday, Mr. Akinola listed vices such as gossip and in-fighting as attitudes that were counterproductive in the house of God.

LESBIANS RULE OK

From Dr Primrose:

According to THE EPISCOPAL NEWS (LA):

The Standing Committee of the Diocese of Los Angeles has received the necessary majority of Standing Committee consents to the December 2009 elections of the Rev. Canon Diane Jardine Bruce and the Rev. Canon Mary Douglas Glasspool as bishops suffragan to serve the six-county Los Angeles diocese.

The Los Angeles Standing Committee reported March 10 that within the last 64 days it has received 61 consents needed to the election of Glasspool, and 78 consents to the election of Bruce. In each election a majority of 56 consents was needed from the counterpart Standing Committees of the 110 dioceses of the Episcopal Church.

The consent process to Glasspool’s election is not complete until the Presiding Bishop’s Office in New York confirms that it has received the necessary majority of consents from bishops with jurisdiction in the dioceses of the Church. Meanwhile, the Presiding Bishop’s Office has notified the Los Angeles Standing Committee that 58 of the 61 Standing Committee consents received have been verified to date.

THE RISE IN SHEER GALL OF THE ROMAN EMPIRE

In a lengthy address delivered in Canada on March 6, Cardinal William Levada, prefect for the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, stated that the reception of communities of Anglicans into the Catholic Church is consistent with Anglican-Catholic ecumenical dialogue because “union with the Catholic Church is the goal of ecumenism.

Tracing the history of Anglican-Catholic dialogue since the Second Vatican Council, Cardinal Levada noted that Anglican decisions to ordain women and countenance homosexual activity were not consistent with earlier statements agreed to by Anglican and Catholic theologians. “No wonder, then, that the ordination of a bishop in a homosexual partnership in New Hampshire, with subsequent approval by the General Convention of the Episcopal Church of the United States in 2003, and the authorization of rituals for the blessing of gay unions and marriages by the Anglican Church in Canada, have caused an enormous upheaval within the Anglican communion,” the cardinal observed.

Cardinal Levada then compared the reception of Anglican communities into the Catholic Church to the addition of an instrument to an orchestra. Professing the Catechism of the Catholic Church, these communities will play the same doctrinal notes, yet will enrich the orchestra with another sound.

Let me add right away that when I say enrichment I am referring not to any addition of essential elements of sanctification and truth to the Catholic Church,” said Cardinal Levada. “Christ has endowed her with all the essential elements. I am referring to the addition of modes of expression of these essential elements, modes which enhance everyone’s appreciation of the inexhaustible treasures bestowed on the Church by her divine founder.”

COMPLETE TRANSCRIPT

COMMENT: My guess is that the number of Old Catholics and Independent catholics around the world who are in full communion with Canterbury far exceeds the number of Anglican schismatics currently considering joining the Roman Empire (especially if you restrict the latter to just real Anglicans and not cults that cleared off years ago). And Old Catholics, Independent Filipino Catholics and the like are, on the whole, much nicer people than President Duncan et al. You win some, you lose some, but considering Anglicanism's small beginnings we're still well in the lead.

DON'T BLAME MADPRIEST, BLAME MAD DAD

An Irish man died and his wife arranged an extravagant funeral and wake.

As the last guests departed the affair, his wife Colleen turned to her oldest and dearest friend.

"Ah well, to be sure Paddy would be pleased," she said.

"To be sure you're right," replied Mary, who lowered her voice and leaned in close. "So go on, how much did this really cost?'"

"All of it," said Colleen. "Forty thousand."

"Aw No!" Mary exclaimed. "I mean, it was very grand, but £40,000?!!!"

Colleen answered, "The funeral was £6,500. I donated £500 to church. The whiskey, wine and snacks were another £500.
The rest went for the Memorial Stone."

Mary computed quickly. "For the love of God Colleen, £32,500 for a Memorial Stone? How big is it?"

So Colleen showed her:

THIS TIME HE ACTUALLY JUMPED

From INDEPENDENT.IE:

Management has ordered the removal of a statue of Christ that has adorned Killarney Community Hospital for over 70 years. Citing "health and safety reasons", but later hinting the decision had more to do with political correctness in not offending non-Catholics, Jesus was sent packing yesterday.

Politicians as well as patients and visitors to the hospital expressed sadness and dismay at the move and said it was political correctness gone mad.

Fr Kevin McNamara, a curate in Killarney, said: "People I visited today are extremely upset. We are demanding it be put back."

Councillor Brendan Cronin said staff and the elderly patients were extremely upset. "Where is the building survey that says this statue was a risk?" he said.

The HSE said that hospitals were "independent entities" and the decision to move the statue had been made by management in Killarney.

The statue had been there since September 1939 when World War II broke out.

COMMENT: If you walk round any European major town or city you will come across huge statues of long dead people dominating public spaces. During their lives many of these celebrated dignitaries were responsible for invading India, oppressing the workforce in sweatshop factories and mills and that sort of stuff. Heck, in Sutherland, Scotland there's even a huge column on top of a hill with a statue of the bloke who was responsible for the Highland clearances standing on top of it.

These statues are, in many ways, offensive but we are an intelligent race perfectly capable of viewing such things in context. Even the Scots believe the dastardly duke should stay on his plinth as a reminder of the awful things the English did to them (which is a bit weird as Mrs Sutherland, who erected the memorial after her husband's death was as Scottish as Billy Connolly).

So, yes, this story is about political correctness gone mad. If non-Catholics can't see it as a symbol of the care given in the hospital then they are just plain stupid and should be ignored anyway. What next - the Egyptian government demolishes the Sphinx because it's pagan origins might offend the tourists who go to see it?

THE GRAND TUFTI AT GUILDFORD

From THE TIMES:

The Grand Tufti has condemned evangelist "bulies" who attempt to convert people of other faiths to Christianity. He said it was right to be suspicious of proselytism that involves "bullying, insensitive approaches" to other faiths.

In a speech at Guildford cathedral, he criticised those who believed they had all the answers amd treated non-Christians as if their traditions of reflection and imagination were of no interest to anyone. "God save us form that kind of approach," he said.

But he added: "God save us also from the nervousness about our own conviction that doesn’t allow us to say we speak about Jesus because we believe he matters, we believe he matters, because we believe that in him human beings find their peace, their destinies converge, and their dignities are fully honoured."

Later, the archbishop took part in 'An evening in conversation' with Jim Al-Khalili, author, broadcaster and Professor of Public Engagement, at the University of Surrey. The two discussed similar experiences of balancing a life of academia with that of being in the public eye. The conversation covered various topics including prayer, faith and science, and the role of religion in setting moral boundaries. During the discussion, the Archbishop urged individuals to resist being overwhelmed by the scale of the problems such as poverty and climate change, and to recognise the impact that individual decisions and actions can make in these areas. Then members of the public submitted questions for the Archbishop to address after the interview. Topics included Uganda's equality bill, violence in Iraq, and whether there is scientific proof for the existence of God.

DENVER RC DIOCESE INTENT ON
MAKING LITTLE CHILDREN SUFFER

From CNN:

Gay and lesbian groups are attacking a decision by the archdiocese of Denver, Colorado, not to re-enroll a child in a Catholic school in Boulder, Colorado, next year because the child's parents are lesbians. The issue centers on the Sacred Heart of Jesus School, where the pre-schooler is currently enrolled.

"These actions by the Denver Archdiocese harm the student by taking the child away from friends, teachers and community," said Jarrett Barrios, president of the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation. "It's deeply troubling to see any school remove a child from their educational program simply as the means of rejecting that child's parents."

But the archdiocese defended its decision.

"Parents living in open discord with Catholic teaching in areas of faith and morals unfortunately choose by their actions to disqualify their children from enrollment," it said in a statement posted on its Web site. "To allow children in these circumstances to continue in our school would be a cause of confusion for the student in that what they are being taught in school conflicts with what they experience in the home. We communicated the policy to the couple at Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic School as soon as we realized the situation. We discussed the reasons with them and have sought to respond in a way that does not abruptly displace the student but at the same time respects the integrity of the Catholic school's philosophy."

In a posting of his sermon, the Rev. Bill Breslin, pastor of Sacred Heart of Jesus Church, supported the move.

"The issue is not about our not accepting 'sinners,' " he said. "It is not about punishing the child for the sins of his or her parents. It is simply that the lesbian couple is saying that their relationship is a good one that should be accepted by everyone; and the Church cannot agree to that."

About 30 opponents of the move -- "mostly hetero allies of the gay community" -- protested Sunday outside the church during.

COMMENT: There is a point where you can cross from ignorance and stubbornness into plain and unambiguous evil. The Roman Catholic hierarchy of Colorado and those in authority at the Sacred Heart of Jesus School have blatantly done this and, to make matters worse, are arrogantly proclaiming their nastiness. Honestly, it would have been better for them if millstones had been hung around their necks and they had been thrown into the sea. God will get them.

THE PRAYER LIST

Today I'm adding something new at the end of The Prayer List. I'm calling it MY TEN CENTS WORTH. It is voluntary and choosing not to take part in no way effects the efficacy of your prayers. And it's very simple. When you have lit your virtual candle put just 10 cents or 10 pence (or 10 whatever) physically into a container and then click below to say you have done so. Then, when you feel inclined, give the money that has accumulated to the charity or good cause of your own choice. I will regularly post an update on how much the community has raised. I have no way of knowing who has paid for their virtual candle and who hasn't and, honestly, I don't care. This is simply something for those of us who are into this sort of thing.

THE MIDNIGHT JUKEBOX

Since the earthquake in Haiti there must have been hundreds
of records released with the intention of any profits made
from them being donated to the relief operation. Most of
those records will have been made for the most noble of
intentions and most of them will be utter crap. Of course,
people will happily buy crap charity records as "We Are The
World" proved beyond doubt. And the fact that they do so in
such vast numbers proves that humankind is, on the whole,
incredibly stupid. It costs money to make a record and every
record made helps destroy a little bit more of the
environment. So, don't buy the record. Give all the money
that you were going to spend on the record straight to the
charity concerned. That way, the charity gets more money,
more people are helped and you don't have to live with a
shite record and the embarrassment of having made such a
stupid financial decision. You also have the extremely
satisfying bonus of not being involved in the publicity of the
careers of assorted pop music celebrities, whose individual
incomes will, in some cases, be greater than the entire gdp
of the country you are trying to help.

But, tonights mix on the Midnight Jukebox is a completely
different kettle of fish. It is a record highlighting the
suffering in Haiti which is not only musically good, but is,
in fact, bloody brilliant. I bought the tunes simply because
I like them. I have no idea where the music is from and who
it is by and if anyone does know, please do let me know. I
bought it from eMusic, a perfectly legal, download site.

If you listen to this selection of tunes and enjoy the
experience then pop something in the next collection
for Haiti that is shoved under your nose.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

Check out the post "Am I working?" at the GLORIOUS THINGS blog. Those of you in non-stipendary ministry or non-paid work of any description (not just religious) will find it interesting and, no doubt, infuriating as well.

HEADLINE OF THE DAY

From CATHNEWS:

Well, they've achieved it at last. The Roman Catholic hierarchy has finally got rid of that embarrassing Old Testament.

No doubt you are expecting me to cynically say something now along the lines of it only being a matter of time before they ditch all that stuff about Jesus in the New Testament. But that would be an incredibly ignorant thing for me to do as, along with the leaderships of most of the world's Christian denominations, they did that already, years ago.

A VALUED MINISTRY

Last year OCICBW... highlighted the plight of Southampton University chaplain, Simon Stevens, who faced redundancy because of Bishop NoseOutOf-Joynt's downsizing policy. Many of you visited Simon's blog and left him messages of support.

And good on you, because the overwhelming support Simon received from the blogosphere merged with the overwhelming support of his students for both himself and a permanent chaplaincy and has led to the formation of a organised campaign which is well on its way to raising the money needed to continue Simon's ministry at the university. It also appears, as is often the case in such situations as this, to have embarrassed the powers that be in Winchester Diocese, into jumping onto the bandwagon and actually trying to do something themselves to save the chaplaincy.

If Simon is anything like me, he will be on cloud nine at the moment. The support of friends and strangers makes mere trivialities, like unemployment and homelessness, so less frightening than when they are faced alone.

IDLE HANDS ARE THE DEVIL'S PLAYTHING

From Our Ruth in THE TIMES:

Roman Catholic theologian, Father Hans Kung, has linked clerical sex abuse with priestly celibacy, blaming the Church’s “uptight” views on sex for child abuse scandals in Germany, Ireland and the US and adding that the Church’s attitude was also revealed in its opposition to birth control.

Writing in The Tablet, Father Kung said that it was the case that abuse was found also in families, schools and other churches. But he asked: “Why is it so prevalent in the Catholic Church under celibate leadership?” He said that celibacy was not the only cause of the misconduct but described it as “the most important and structurally the most decisive” expression of the Church’s uptight attitude to sex.

Citing the New Testament, he says that Jesus and St Paul practised celibacy but “allowed full freedom in this matter to each individual”. St Paul in his first letter to the Corinthians wrote: “Because of cases of sexual immorality, each man should have his own wife and each woman her own husband.” Peter and the apostles were married and their ministries did not suffer, he said, pointing out that thousands of priests protested when the new law was introduced as late as the 11th century.

Father Kung said: “Compulsory celibacy is the principal reason for today’s catastrophic shortage of priests, for the fatal neglect of eucharistic celebration, and for the tragic breakdown of personal pastoral ministry in many places.”

He argues that there are two simple solutions to the shortage of priests: “Abolition of the celibacy rule, the root of all these evils, and the admission of women to ordination. The bishops know this, but they do not have the courage to say it in public.”

The German church has rejected any suggestion that abuse is linked to celibacy.

COMMENT: You would think a church that bases so much of it's dogma on natural law would be more understanding of the natural needs of all its adherents, including its priests. Sex is about as natural as it gets.

If the Roman Catholic hierarchy believes that birth control and same sex marriage will lead to the breakdown of society because they are, in their opinion, unnatural, then surely they should also believe that celibacy, being blatantly unnatural if you apply the logic of their natural law theories, will also lead to antisocial behaviour. They want their cake and to eat it too when the sensible thing would be to allow their priests to have their crumpet and eat it too.

HOLY SPIRIT OR HOCUS POCUS?

This is a long clip and you will probably get bored very quickly.
But, when you do, fast forward to near the end and the last
person to go forward to testify. I don't have the experience or
knowledge to comment on this sort of thing although, as usual,
I would like to see the pastor's bank statements as I think they
will show the veracity of what is going on one way or the other.

Thanks to Freedom Bound who sent this in to MadPriest
Towers and who received a great, personal blessing from
watching it. Yes, you guessed right - he fancies the worship
leader something rotten.

GOOD NEWS FROM L.A.

I've received an email from one of my most longstanding blog friends, Clyde Beswick, who used to blog as The Opinionated Old Fart and who is the only person I know with as bawdy sense of humour as our resident, solitary religious, Ellie Finlay.

FYI, after being out of work for almost 2 years I decided to start my own business--an art gallery. Been keeping busy and don't have much time for reading blogs these days but I want you to know that you are in my prayers dear friend.

This is excellent news and you can see exactly what Clyde is up to by visiting the CB1GALLERY WEBSITE.

You might think that as Clyde is now the owner of a posh establishment and rubbing shoulders with the cultural elite of Los Angeles that he will have changed his persona to reflect that of his refined clientele.

Like heck he has!

This newspaper clipping accompanied his email:

As you can see, he's still the same, old
Clyde we know and love - praise the Lord!

SAD AND BEAUTIFUL WORLD

From THE ASSOCIATED PRESS:

Mark Linkous, the singer-songwriter who released his music under the band name Sparklehorse, has died after shooting himself in the chest in Tennessee. He was 47.
Knoxville Police Department spokesman Darrell DeBusk said Linkous shot himself outside a friend's house around 1:20 p.m. Saturday with his own rifle. DeBusk said Linkous was staying
with friends and became upset after receiving a text message.

DeBusk said Linkous left no suicide note behind. The North
Carolina-based artist was moving to Knoxville and staying
with two friends, who told police Linkous was drinking and
became upset after texting with an unknown person. After
saying he didn't want to talk about what was upsetting him,
the friends said Linkous went upstairs for a short time, then
left the house through a back door. A witness saw Linkous sit
down nearby, take out his rifle, place it against his chest and
pull the trigger.

Linkous was popular in the indie music scene with a unique
sound that was engaging, ethereal and hauntingly beautiful.
News of his death spread quickly on the Internet and was met
with shock and sadness.

I am pretty cut up about this.

His first solo album, "Vivadixiesubmarinetransmissionplot" is
easily one of my top ten favourite albums of all time. He mixed
the hauntingly beautiful with the loudest of loud and made lo-fi
work for him far more creatively than any other musician or
engineer has ever achieved.

So The Midnight Jukebox tonight is my tribute to this crazy,
flawed, beautiful genius. I have spent ages putting it together
and making it seamless. I did so with love.

"DISGRACEFUL AND SCANDALOUS
BEHAVIOUR" DOWN UNDER

I love the accused's response at the end of this extract:

From THE AGE:

Two South Australian Anglican bishops have brought formal charges of disgraceful and scandalous behaviour against a third, claiming that he tried to stack his diocesan council to get a $1 million payout and that he protected and promoted a senior priest accused of sexual abuse.

In a nine-count charge lodged with the church's Special Tribunal, Bishop Ross Davies of The Murray diocese in Murray Bridge is alleged to have taken a year's sick leave without ever providing evidence of ill-health and dodged his duties as a bishop.

The claims, brought by Adelaide archbishop Jeff Driver and Willochra bishop Garry Weatherill, say Bishop Davies lives outside his diocese and worships at a Catholic church in Adelaide while still being paid, that he has publicly claimed the Anglican Church of Australia is not a true Christian church, and that he took part in consecrating a dissident bishop against church rules.

In his diocese he licensed as Anglican clergy two bishops of the dissident Traditional Anglican Communion, which split from the Anglican church after it ordained women in 1992.

Bishop Davies said he would defend the charges. ''I don't think I've done anything that deserves me to be ejected from office,'' he said.

BISHOP OF LIVERPOOL TAKES
ANOTHER BRAVE STEP FORWARD

Having already publicly apologised for opposing the appointment of the Revd Dr Jeffrey John as Bishop of Reading in 2003, the Rt. Reverend James Jones has now used his presidential address at his diocesan synod this year to call for an "agree to disagree" policy in the Church of England in respect of sexual ethics.

It's an okay speech. In fact, it's great coming from such a high ranking evangelical. But, although he has definitely helped the situation as far as gay people in England are concerned, I think he is naive in his thinking. Personally, I don't think there is much equivalence between agreeing to disagree on pacifism and agreeing to disagree on sexual ethics. You see, other than possibly when our country is being invaded, it is no problem at all to have a pastoral relationship with a priest who has a different take on just war theory to yourself. But, if you are gay, and your vicar believes, and maybe even preaches, that you are a vile sinner destined to be frazzled big time in the style of the citizens of Gommorah, it is impossible to rely on him (or, just possibly, her) for help on pastoral matters or to take what he preaches from the pulpit seriously. Okay, we could sort ourselves at the local level into inclusive and homophobic congregations (although this would be problematic in rural areas) but when you get up to church offices such as rural dean, archdeacon and bishop, things start getting far too complicated. We are back to having to consider two distinct churches in the same geographical area, with their own hierarchies.

From THE DIOCESE OF LIVERPOOL WEBSITE:

The Bishop of Liverpool, The Rt Reverend James Jones has used his presidential address to the March synod of the Diocese of Liverpool to call for Anglicans to “accept the diversity of ethical convictions” in the debate on sexual ethics so that “we will let nothing deflect us from mission” In his address the Bishop made comparisons with the history of the just war theory and the ethics of pacifism. He talked about how “we handle disagreements about ethical principles within the body of Christ” and will say that the need to allow a diversity of ethical convictions should mirror the way that the church “has always allowed a diversity of ethical stance on taking human life”. The Bishop said that “on a number of major moral issues the church allows a large space for a variety of nuances, interpretations, applications and disagreements”.

The Bishop proposed that we can move “towards allowing a variety of ethical conviction about people of the same gender loving each other fully” and that he believes “the day is coming when Christians who equally profoundly disagree about the consonancy of same gender love within the discipleship of Christ will in spite of their disagreement drink openly from the same cup of salvation.”

I have posted the bishop's full address at FOOTNOTES.

PEDANTS PLEASE NOTE: I am fully aware that there appear to be two Norman knights with the Viking, King Canute (Cnut if you are a pedant). Blame the cartoonist who I nicked the picture off - he's probably American and thinks that the Vikings came from Minnesota.

HEADLINE OF THE DAY

From EKKLESIA:

That's a very generous offer and I think the Scottish Episcopal
Church should respond by closing down its biological warfare
unit and no longer train their missiles on St. Giles' Cathedral.

IF IT STINKS LIKE A CULT...

From THE SCOTSMAN:

A group of renegade Scientologists are calling for a "Reformation" in the controversial faith, saying that members of Sea Org are being abused.

Christie King Collbran, 33, and her husband, Chris, 29, were recruited as teenagers to work for Sea Org. They signed a contract for a billion years – in keeping with the church's belief that Scientologists are immortal. They worked seven days a week, often on little sleep, for payments of $50 £33) a week.

The Collbrans were married in a ceremony at the Scientology centre in Manhattan. It was in Johannesburg, where the couple had gone to supervise the building of a new Scientology organisation, that Mr Collbran, 29, began to have doubts. He said he saw an officer hit a subordinate, and soon found that the atmosphere of supervision through intimidation was affecting him.

In Johannesburg, officials made the church look busy for publicity photographs by filling it with Sea Org members, the Collbrans said. To make their numbers look good for headquarters, South African parishioners took their maids and gardeners to church. But the Ideal Orgs are supposed to be self-supporting, and the Johannesburg church was generating only enough to pay the couple $17 a week each, Mr Collbran said.

"It was all built on lies," he said. "We're working 16 hours a day trying to save the planet, and the church is shrinking."

When Mr Collbran decided he wanted to leave the Sea Org, he was sent to Los Angeles, where potential defectors are assigned to do menial labour while they reconsider their decision. Ms Collbran remained in Johannesburg, and for three months the church refused to allow them to contact each other, the couple said. They then went through hours of special auditing sessions called "confessionals". The auditors tried to talk them out of leaving, and the Collbrans wavered.

The couple went back to work for the church in Los Angeles, but Ms Collbran found the atmosphere so oppressive that she likened it to living under "martial law" and again resolved to leave. So she intentionally conceived a child. She knew that the Sea Org did not allow its members to have children, and she had known women who were removed when they refused to have abortions. She waited until her pregnancy had almost reached the end of the first trimester to inform her superiors. It still took two months before the church let the Collbrans go, in 2006, and not before making them sign affidavits.

Ms Collbran says she still believes in Scientology – not in the church as it is now constituted, but in its teachings. She still gets auditing, from other Scientologists who have defected. Mr Collbran wants nothing to do with his former church. "Eventually I realised I was part of a con," he said.

The church of Scientology says the defectors are lying.

ANOTHER COUNTRY

From NEW KERALA:

A progressive Brit-Muslim woman councillor was forced to dress more conservatively after receiving death threats and sexually harassing phone calls. Shiria Khatun, 38, told the police that callers threatened to kill her and her four young children. In one call, they warned they would dig up parents' graves and bury her there instead.

"They're really disgusting. They would talk about my Western clothes, my tight jeans and my body parts," she said.

At first she was "too embarrassed" to call the police, but when the threats, mostly made in the Bangladeshi dialect Sylheti, targeted her family she decided to act.

"As a councillor I'm meant to be a strong woman and I didn't want to show that I was bothered, but it's gone too far," the Daily Express quoted her, as saying.

The Labour councillor in the controversial borough of Tower Hamlets is considered one of the area's most progressive politicians and frequently campaigns for more Muslim women to enter politics.

COMMENT: There was a "Dispatches" investigation on Channel 4 last week that exposed how extreme Islamists in this London borough have taken over the political process of the council. The programme also showed how the extremists are given respectability and protection by so called moderate mosques and imams and how they have persuaded politicians, eager to be seen as politically correct, to hand over millions of pounds to their organisations. Their main political aim is the Islamification of England.

As you would imagine, this is causing extreme racial tension in the areas where the militant Islamists operate. But the programme showed that the people most effected by the bullying tactics of the fanatics are the ordinary, moderate muslims living in these areas. Having found freedom from religious oppression in England the last thing they want is a return to the controlling religion of their homelands. Some of them were prepared to go on camera to state this and, as Shiria Khatun's experience shows, this was an incredibly brave thing to do. But more muslims need to do this if the paranoia in my country is to end. It is not good enough for the Muslim population of my country to just rely on non-Muslim sympathisers to keep stating that not all Muslims want the complete Islamisation of England and/or support terrorism. We need more muslims like Shiria Khatun who are prepared to show they value the native culture of the land they now live in whilst advocating the parts of their own culture that could enhance the existing culture rather than replace it. But for such people, who represent a very large proportion of English Muslims, to become a political force for the good in England it is necessary for the politicians and talking heads of the nation to stop being so naive about Islamic extremists and to stop courting them and being accommodating of them. In fact, they need to condemn these racists as vehemently as they condemn the British National Party and other white fascist movements operating in England. And they need to do this quickly as extreme Islam is infiltrating all parts of Britain. They have just set up an operation in Newcastle Upon Tyne which is a place that has been free of racial unrest for many years.

The majority of British Muslims are of Pakistani background.

From SPERO NEWS:

A 34-year-old Christian woman, Gulzar Kanwal, was “accused of blasphemy” on March 1, 2010, in Wandu, a village in the Gujranawala district of Pakistan’s Punjab state, when she refused to sell her cosmetics shop to aspiring Muslim shop owners in the market. Some 400 Christian families reside in Wandu.

According to local sources, Gulzar Kanwal owned a cosmetic shop that was popular especially with the women of Wandu because she was the only female owner of such a business in Wandu. Kanwal and her business piqued the ire of the local Muslim shopkeepers, since she is a woman and successful at her trade. They started making persistent demands on Kanwal to sell her shop to them.

On March 1, Haji Ahsan - a Muslim shop owner - asked Kanwal if she was interested in selling her shop to Muhammad Bashir - another Muslim shopkeeper. Kanwal responsed that she was not interested in selling her shop. According to local reports, Muslim shop owners, Muhammad Bashir, Muhammad Hafeez Salman and Maqsood Boota, gave Kanwal’s refusal a religious tinge and accused her of “committing blasphemy” against the prophet Muhammad.

As the word got out, hundreds of local Muslims gathered in front of Kanwal’s shop. The angry mob hurled obscenities at the “blasphemer” and attempted to beat her, so police officials from the Wandu police station near the market came to rescue her.

The police found Kanwal guiltless of making blasphemous remarks against the prophet Muhammad.

Kanwal is stressed and uncertain about her future as she cannot imagine reopening her shop because of death threats that have been directed at her after she was accused of committing blasphemy.
