SACRILEGE

Vandals have cut down ONE of the Glastonbury thorn bushes. The one on the hill marking the spot where Joseph of Arimathea planted his staff on one of his trips to England. Of course, this is sacrilege of the highest order but it is not the end of the world. There are plenty of other thorn bushes descended from the first.

Once there was only one bush but the Puritans cut it down. Fortunately a group of true Christians took some cuttings before the bush died and these were propagated in secret and replanted when the true king of England was restored to his throne. From what I remember there are, at least, three growing in the Abbey grounds and, no doubt, quite a few in nurseries somewhere, ready for such an occasion as this. The vandalised thorn bush will, I'm sure, be replanted.

The grounds in which the tree stood are owned by Edward James, CEO of a now bankrupt currency exchange firm, who was arrested last week. Speculation that the destruction of the tree was a revenge attack is rife in the town. Other likely suspects would be fundamentalist, neo-puritans, militant atheists or Rowan Williams, of course.

HEADLINE OF THE DAY

I wonder if KJ will ever reach that age.
Well, it's something for him to aim for.

WITH ALL YOUR SOUL

When it comes to taste in music, and I'm painting with very broad brush strokes here, gay men fall into two distinct categories - those who love high-brow classical music and those who love really tacky disco music. If you fall into the latter category, you are going to thoroughly enjoy the following selection of tunes. If you fall into the former category then you are going to hate them. As for the rest of you, it all depends on how you misspent your youth. If, like me, it was dancing in sweaty nightclubs (Hi, Lois!) then you are with the gay boys with the low brow taste in music and you will love it all. Personally, I think this is one of the best mixes I have ever put together and the first track is probably my favourite record of the year. Yes, I know it's kitsch, but kitsch performed brilliantly, as it is here, is heaven itself, darlings.

MADPRIEST'S THOUGHT FOR THE DAY

Jesus never sacked anybody.
Not even Judas Iscariot.

FORMER BRICK OF THE DAY IS A RIGHT BASTARD

From THE HERALD SUN (Australia):

Father Bob Maguire was crowned Old Bastard of the Year at a gala lunch at Crown.

The renegade South Melbourne priest was handed the award for 2010 by the International Society of Old Bastards in recognition of his work with the homeless and disadvantaged in Melbourne.

COMMENT: At last! I have something worthwhile to aim for in life. Although I have a feeling that I know a couple of Australian gentlemen who will probably get it before I do. Time for a limerick, Boaz?

THE SHADOW STRIKES AGAIN!

From THE SUN:

A primary school teacher took her own video recorder into class - and accidentally showed a porn film to pupils. The teacher planned to use her machine to show an educational programme to her class of ten-year-olds. But when she turned it on, X-rated scenes on a tape left in the player flashed up.

The teacher hurriedly turned it off. But four children were exposed to "inappropriate material", Devon County Council admitted.

The teacher has been disciplined.

THE SUN has, helpfully, posted a photograph of the unnamed teacher.

MADPRIEST ENTERS INTO

SPIRIT OF CHRISTMAS

I've just entered an online draw to win over £1000 worth of Le Creuset cookware.

After I submitted the completed form I was redirected to a page where I was asked if I would like to recommend the competition to my friends.

NO! OF COURSE NOT. Do they think I was born yesterday? The more people who enter the less chance I have of winning. Merry Christmas everybody.

NOT THE RIGHT PERSON - AGAIN

"The post will now be re-advertised."

Ouch! That hurts.

THE SOPPY SHEILA SELECTION

From APPEALDEMOCRAT.COM:

He's gotten a little paunchy and he's quite spoiled. But Gus the orange church cat helps lift parishioners' spirits and keeps them entertained, say his closest friends at St. John's Episcopal Church.

He's a vocal greeter, patient playmate for small children, and is gentle to a fault, says Jennifer Adams, part-time secretary at the 150-plus-year-old Marysville institution.

"They'd have to get rid of me before they ever gave Gus away," Adams said.

OH BUGGER, IT'S CHRISTMAS!
10TH. DECEMBER 2010
LOUD FRIDAY MEGAMIX

What worries me is that Christmas is in serious danger of being hijacked by pompous people complaining that Christmas has been hijacked by big business. A plague on their house and a plague on the house of big business as well. Why can't they just leave us alone so that we can get on with what  Christmas is all about? Namely SEX AND GOD AND ROCK AND ROLL. They go together like a horse and carriage (with God being the reins that hold the horse and carriage together).

There's nothing unpleasant about any of these tunes. Turn up the volume!

Money donated so far = $726.47

Thank you so very much.

You will have noticed that I have added a subscription button. This is for those who wish to donate a fixed amount each month. I have put up a few options but if you wish to donate a different amount to those suggested, please drop me an email stating the figure and I will add your amount to the list of options. At the moment you have to have a PayPal account of your own to use this feature. If you would like to donate through PayPal by debit or credit card, without having to set up a PayPal account, please let me know. If it is worthwhile I will pay the small monthly premium that PayPal charge for this facility.

If the monthly subscriptions ever reached a total of $1000 I would look for a part time, house for duty, parish post (3 days a week) and devote the rest of my time to my blog ministry. I promise I am not stating this to pressurise you into donating (I am happy to go back into full time parish ministry). It's just something that would effect my decision should it happen.

And this is for Cathy:

I'M DREAMING OF A WHITE RIOT CHRISTMAS

All the power's in the hands
of people rich enough to buy it,
while we walk the street
too chicken to even try it

What a day!

Rioting in the streets.

Government ministers resigning on matters of principle.

Brave cops and nasty cops.

And Charles and Camilla making a guest appearance slap bang in the middle of it.

I know it won't last but, for a brief moment at the end of 2010, in the snow, the English found their bollocks again and we saw some passion.

CLYDE TO THE RESCUE!

Wow, folks!

Our old friend, Clyde Beswick (the original "Opinionated Old Fart and one of OCICBW...'s first friends) has hit the news, big time.

From BLOGDOWNTOWN:

For Clyde Beswick, the upcoming screening of a video art piece removed last week from an exhibition at the Smithsonian's National Portrait Gallery is a protest against censorship, but it's also a way to show that Downtown galleries are serious about art.

Beswick's CB1 Gallery will play “A Fire in My Belly" (1987), a 13-minute film by the late David Wojnarowicz that was, until last week, a part of the Smithsonian's “Hide / Seek: Difference and Desire in American Portraiture,” an exhibition on gay identity in art.

The short video was pulled after the Catholic League and members of Congress complained it was sacrilegious.

“I think it's important for all to know that censorship is wrong and that artists deserve to be heard and seen,” said Beswick last night, moments after confirming that he could secure the video art.

"A Fire in My Belly" will be screened through the entranceway window in CB1's West Gallery space during Downtown Art Walk and through the weekend.

And, my goodness, isn't Clyde looking well.

COMING SOON TO AN ANGLICAN SCHOOL NEAR YOU
(MORE DANCING WITH THE DEVIL)

DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME!

From JOY ONLINE (Ghana):

The proprietor of a Senior High School situated at Mataheko in Accra who is also a priest of the Anglican church (name withheld), has allegedly ordered some students of his school to lie on their back and gaze directly at the sun for half an hour, for failing to buy a teaching syllabus. Some of the students narrating the incident on Asempa FM’s Abrabo programme on Tuesday said, they were in their various classrooms during lessons when the proprietor came to demand the teaching syllabus and further asked those who did not have it to see him in his office. According to them, upon reaching the principal’s office they realized almost all the first and second-year students had already gathered in front of the proprietor’s office for failing to produce their copies of the same syllabus. They said, it was then that he eventually asked all of them to lie straight on their backs with instructions to look directly into the sun.

The public Relations officer of at the Ghana Education Service, Charles Parker-Allotey in an interview with Maame Akua, host of Abrabo has condemned the action of the school proprietor. He stated that it is the responsibility of the school authorities to buy teaching syllabuses for the teachers of the school and not the students.

SECRETARY OF CARDIFF HUMANISTS*
CORROBORATES BISHOP OF SWANSEA'S
ACCUSATION AGAINST ATHEISTS

* Actually, I've checked and they are not necessarily humanists (although I expect some of them are). They are atheists. Humanism is something completely different. I'm a humanist as is my good blogging buddy, the heathen, Gurdur (may God have mercy on his soul). A humanist is for humanity, not against religion. Both religious and non-religious humanists are against those aspects of religion which lessen human dignity although we may argue about what those particular aspects are. The exclusive use of the word "humanist" by atheists is exactly the same in aggression and the manipulation of the English language as would be the exclusive use of the word "morality" by religionists.

From WALES ONLINE:

The Rt Rev John Davies, Bishop of the Church in Wales diocese of Swansea and Brecon, said outspoken atheists had “little grasp” of how stories told in the Bible came about, adding: “One of the great falsehoods perpetrated by the aggressive atheist lobby is that our faith is without foundation and that, in effect, it’s all made up.”

In his annual Christmas message he said: “That lobby quite deliberately times some of its most vociferous outbursts to coincide with two of the church’s greatest festivals, Christmas and Easter.

“Dealing with the Gospel stories in which these events are reflected, they trumpet that ‘things like that couldn’t have happened’. Quite evidently, and perhaps because they have little grasp of how and when those stories came to be recorded, they miss a point and overlook the fact that the faith is rooted in the experiences of real people, living witnesses, whose words were distilled, crystallised and developed into the stories which we possess and treasure. If one version of a particular story varies from another, we should not be bothered or concerned. If, in a strict sense, the stories are deemed not to be historically true in each and every detail, it does not mean that they do not convey truth, the most profound truth.”

Julian Bennett, secretary of Cardiff Humanists, who describe themselves as a group of atheists, agnostics and non-religious free thinkers, said not all atheists were aggressive or calling for Christmas carols to be banned.

He said: “The humanist view is to call for change not through aggression but by peaceful persuasion and democratic means. We object to faith schools, for instance, because things like sex education are based on religious beliefs not the best health interests of children. But we would never object to people’s right to hold religious beliefs or to celebrate festival like Christmas.

COMMENT: Well, thank you Mr. Bennett. You have proved the bishop's allegations in one sentence. Atheists may want to get rid of faith schools (a view they are very much entitled to) but, in stead of telling the truth regarding their motivations which may not be popular, they tell lies which they think will be more enthusiastically received.

In England and Wales, sex education is part of health education which is part of the national curriculum. The subject is taught from a scientific standpoint. For example, no Church of England school teaches that gay relationships are wrong (heck, it's not even supposed to part of Anglican doctrine in my country). In fact, I very much doubt that there is any difference in emphasis on morality in the teaching of sexual health between C. of E. and secular schools (and, I expect the schools attached to the Church in Wales). Both Christian and secular teachers of this subject will base any value judgements totally on respect for self and others.

But, as the bishop points out, militant atheists have little regard for the truth but prey on the general public's uninformed prejudices. Shame on them! Perhaps I am wrong and atheists are not capable of living a moral life.

There is nothing that MadPriest would like to see more than the coming together of real humanists (religious and atheistic) to fight the lies and misinformation peddled by anger filled religious organisations and their atheistic counterparts.

MERRY CHRISTMAS FROM MICHELLE:

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

Jendi at REITER'S BLOCK has posted an excellent piece entitled "Why Christians Can't Recognize Christian Art," which is well worth taking the trouble to read. She refers to the JESUS IN LOVE blog and rightly so as many gay Christian artists are doing art outside of the naff norms of the Christian art ghetto.

What I would like to see is gay Christian artists daring to move away from primarily painting politicised, homoerotic subjects for some of the time, at least. As they have already freed themselves from the stereotypical Christian art mindset they are in a perfect position to promote a universal Christian art movement that is realist, unsettling and confronting rather than the comfortable art produced by so many mainstream Christian artists which is usually based on idealistic, "nice" Christianity and is wishful thinking rather than being a true statement on the reality of the Christian life.

Ivory Coast update

Basically there's a standoff going on between the new president, Ouattara, (recognized by the UN, other African leaders, France (which formerly colonized Cote d'Ivoire) and the US (and undoubtedly others)), and the old president, Gbagbo, who, helpfully for him, controls the military. Though Ouattara has rebel forces in the north and UN Peacekeepers guarding the hotel where he bases his operations.

Meanwhile, there are
shortages and some serious inflation; the price of beef is up 25% and potatoes 60%, according to the BBC.

The thing is, though I agree that Gbagbo should relinquish power, it's hard to see how that will happen without violence. Please continue your prayers.

From DAH·VEED:

AN UPDATE

Thankfully I have not had to endure the agony of extracting two molars, including an impacted upper wisdom tooth with an abscess. The maxillofacial surgeon disagreed with his wife's interpretation of the panoramic x-ray and felt that what she thought was an abscess, was a shadow.

So he poked and prodded and has diagnosed acute inflammation of the TMJs (temporomandibular joint). As well as possible arthritis in the one which was damaged years ago when I was slugged three times in the mouth during a robbery in the USA. They took a mold of my teeth and made a mouth guard that I must wear day & night for awhile.

I also have a regimen to follow during use of the guard, including; a bland, soft diet, massage over the joints with analgesic cream, hot and cold packs and avoidance of pain medication. That last one has been the hardest, as at times I would have just rather had the kindness of shooting me in the head! (Damn, but if they did not hide my guns!) But I made it through from last Thursday and can report almost no pain at all today.

I still have a broken lower molar that will need a root canal, post and crown, plus an upper molar with a fractured filling that will need a minimum of replacing the filling, but perhaps also a root canal, post and crown. But they can wait a week or two. I am hoping that the impacted wisdom molar will not need extracting if it does not have an abscess, but I am taking an antibiotic to prepare for the root canal(s) and anything else that the future of my mouth may hold.

This was all a great relief to my family, and thank the Lord that they did not all pack up and come to Monterrey. That would have just added to the stress and distress that I was in by having them all here, with me the center of attention, and all of them fussing about me.

As it is, Alexa & Guiermo did get some late Fall peaches and black cherries and made me 2 liters of medicinal homemade ice cream. And Alex has been the loving nephew and was here all weekend to help with whatever I needed.

Thank you for your prayers and continued prayers. It is a grace-filled blessing to sense the prayers of the whole company of saints on one's behalf.

UPDATE ON AILEEN

December 7, 2010: Big meeting with the neurologist team today at 9. Get her MRI results back and am so nervous about it, my stomach is in knots. Keep wondering why they would call a meeting to go over it. They've never done that before. Does it mean bad news, good news or what??---Mike

December 8, 2010: Okay, there has been some speculation as to what's up with the second opinions and so forth and what's going on. Aileen's MRI results came back yesterday and no, the results were not good. The stroke areas are slightly more profuse and the hemorrhage in the back of her brain is still bleeding. RCRH doctors feel that she is right now as good as she will ever get with little or no hope for future gains in her abilities. She is able to communicate through hand squeezing. So we are looking for a second and perhaps a third opinion and will continue to pursue other avenues of treatment for her, including perhaps taking her to Denver to a specialized stroke and brain injury center. A recommendation of this nature has severely shaken my confidence in her doctors and will look at all other options. (Mike)

THE DEVIL ROWAN SLEEPS WITH

From ANGLICAN INFORMATION:

The tragic death of Father Bright Mankhka, a young Malawian priest in the Diocese of Lake Malawi, on 1st December following a serious road accident, has revealed a callous approach to a man who has faithfully served the Anglican Church as a priest over many years.

ANGLICAN-INFORMATION have received a number of reports about this tragic case of vengeful action which we report as follows:

Bright Mankhaka’s funeral took place on 2nd December where he was buried outside his home church (a church he helped to build) in Bumphula, Ntchisi. A correspondent writes, “many people from all walks of life came to pay their last respects to Fr Bright and to console his young widow Gertrude. He was described as humble, hard-working and dedicated to God’s will.”

However, prior to his death internal political squabbling had led to a star chamber report condemning Fr Bright without it seems any evidence or reason. Dated 27th September 2010, a group of priests under the instruction of the new Bishop of Lake Malawi, Francis Kaulanda, produced the following originally secret report leaked to us and now widely available in the diocese:

‘A report on Rev. Bryghton Mankhaka

Lord Bishop Francis Kaulanda, as per your instructions that we, Canon A.M. Mkoko, Venerable Machemba, Venerable F. Dzantenge, Venerable M. Chilase, Venerable Gumbwa, Rev Fr. S. Matumbo and Canon Christopher Mwawa; interviewed the said priest, I am pleased to present to you the panel’s observations as follows:

i. He is a problem of problems
ii. He has no repentant heart
iii. He is not ready for the priesthood
iv. He is not sure of himself
v. He is not ready to abide by the Canonical obedience
vi. He has shown no remorse
vii. He is not ready to return [the diocesan] motorbike

Recommendations

He is not fit to be hired as priest in this Diocese or elsewhere

Rev’d Canon Christopher K. Mwawa
Chairman of the Panel’

ANGLICAN-INFORMATION observes that it would be hard to find such a shoddy piece of unqualified criticism anywhere. As a report it says nothing of the background or reasons for the seven accusations levelled against Mankhaka and rests essentially as a work of malicious libel. It is astonishing that Bishop Francis Kaulanda has accepted it.

We understand that it was effected during the two week long period that Fr Bright lay unconscious in hospital on life-support and led to the shockingly uncharitable circumstances surrounding the subsequent attempt to bury Fr Bright as a non-religious layman.

A correspondent writes: “Bright’s tragedy has opened up clandestine devilish machinations of some priests of the Diocese of Lake Malawi. When the accident happened we informed the Diocesan Chaplain … he came to see Fr Bright on a Wednesday, after the accident which happened on Monday evening. I understand that the Bishop came to see him on the following Thursday (he has otherwise been in the U.K. including during the time of the funeral). However, we were surprised that the following Sunday no announcement was made or even a mention of him in the prayers.

The Diocesan Secretary refused to offer any kind of support for Fr Bright during his hospitalization or his funeral, saying ‘as a diocese we do not know him as a priest and he must be buried as laity’.

We have seen the Report of the Panel and this has surprised many members of the Church because they did not expect such heavy handedness to be given to a fellow priest who has committed no crime … the diocese has disowned him and only a few personal friends have been to see him. It is very unfortunate as the new Bishop (Francis Kaulanda) promised the Church a new beginning and to bury all past differences ... there are elements that want divisions to continue and are playing the tribal card in church. Now it is Likoma vs Ntchisi and Nkhota-kota etc. It is very pathetic to say the least. Fr Bright was victimised.”

ANGLICAN-INFORMATION notes that another correspondent writes: “In an act of compassion some of Fr Bright’s fellow priests debated the decision of the Report Committee and agreed (bravely) to bury him with the honours of an ordained Priest of the Anglican Church and he was interred as such. They had to open the casket to dress him in his priestly attire.”

So we sadly report another disgraceful picture from the Diocese of Lake Malawi, Province of Central Africa, of hard-hearted, vindictive and unchristian action meted out to a man lying on a life support machine for no reason other than that he had fallen out with the ruling elite.

A full explanation from Bishop Francis Kaulanda is now required.

MERRY CHRISTMAS FROM MICHELLE

OVER AT ST. LAIKA'S AND THE ANCHORHOLD

Our guest preacher at ST. LAIKA'S this week is none other than our very own Ellie Finlay and, boy, is she on form.

Once there was a man of vision who ran through the streets shouting, “Power, greed, corruption!”

One day a little child took pity on the strange prophet and asked, “Don’t you know that nobody is listening to you?”

“Of course, I know that, child,” the wise one replied.

“Then why do you keep shouting since you are not changing anyone? Your shouts are useless.”

“Oh no, they aren’t,” the prophet assured the child. “I do not shout only to change them. I shout so that they might not change me.”

Do go read the rest. You won't regret it. And afterwards pop over to THE ANCHORHOLD and listen to one of Ellie's transcendent music choices. Again, you won't regret it.

A-BEGGIN' I WILL GO

I apologise for bringing this money thing up again, but it's the beginning of the month I have a couple of big bills to pay. Also, no matter what she may say to the contrary, Mrs MP will be expecting a present on Christmas Day from me, the two dogs and the cat (and those three animals always expect me to pay for the gifts they, so selflessly, give). So, here's the usual blurb:

The administrator of this site is the Reverend Jonathan Hagger (a.k.a. MadPriest). He is a licensed Church of England priest but he receives no salary from any church or any other employer. At present his ministry consists entirely of his work at St. Laika's and OCICBW... However, he likes to eat occasionally and his blogs cost quite a bit of money to run. So, in true Anglican style a collection plate will always be available for your donations (via PayPal). Full accounts will be posted here each year. You will never be asked to pledge or tithe but a regular monthly contribution from you would give him security and peace of mind. Another way to help Jonathan is to buy Amazon products via his Amazon shop.

DOGGONE DIPLOMACY

From THE LOCAL (Sweden):

A cable sent from the US embassy in Stockholm and released by WikiLeaks compared Swedish foreign minister Carl Bildt is to a "medium-sized dog" who speaks frankly, but who has "limited political skills."

I think this is very poor. The job of foreign minister is very important and should only be given to talking dogs with exceptionally good political skills.

THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE BEAUTIFUL (2)

THE GOOD

From THE BRISBANE TIMES:

About 50 animal rights activists, representing the number of animals that it takes to make a fur coat and covered in red paint, have staged a naked protest at a square in Barcelona to denounce the torture and slaying of animals to make fur coats.

"People who are sensible to animal suffering see garments made from fur as acts of cruelty and pain, not as luxury items. Animals need their fur, we don't," said Leticia Olivares, a spokeswoman for international animal rights group AnimaNaturalis, which staged the demonstration.

Millions of foxes, minks, otters, beavers, lynxes and other species are raised in captivity in small cages or captured and then killed in brutal ways such as drowning or electrocution to make fur coats, the group said.

THE BAD

From THE LOCAL (Sweden):

A single shot fired by a Swedish hunter, first hit an elk and then continued to travel, hitting a 71-year-old skier and killing him on Saturday.

Police in Kronoberg county remained extremely reticent about details involving the hunting accident on the grounds of the continuing investigation, but also for the sake of the hunter and her hunting companion, who were shaken up after the incident.

Henrik Barnekow, a hunting consultant at the Swedish Hunters Association said that it is the hunter's responsibility to ensure that there is a so-called safety area behind the target: a hill or firm ground behind the animal where the bullet can land safely if the shot misses. "Forests do not count as safety areas," he noted.

He added that it is not uncommon for a shot to pass through an elk or any other game. However, he has never heard of a bullet continuing on to kill someone.

"However, there have been incidents of a bullet ricocheting out of the game, continuing and killing the hunter's dog situated near the prey," he pointed out.

COMMENT: Ha! No doubt the hunter and his companion were upset because they might end up in court. I very much doubt that anybody who shoots at large, slow moving animals just for the fun of it would be upset about the loss of a life, even the life of a human being.

THE BEAUTIFUL

From TYPICALLY SPANISH:

Two Iberian Lynx have been released into the wild in the Sierra Morena in Jaén. They were the first animals to be released as part of the program started in 2005 in what is described as a ‘soft’ release into an initially closed four hectare area close to the Guarrizas river.

The two females, ‘Granadilla’ and ‘Grazalema’ were born this year in the La Olivilla centre, and appeared to be nervous on the release, possibly because there were dozens of people present.
The area is also inhabited by the male lynx ‘Granizo’ and it is hoped that he will help them to adapt to the area and the capture of rabbits.

The release meets a 2010 target date to let Iberian Lynx back into the wild as part of the protection program for the planets most endangered feline.
