The Church of England insists on full disclosure from it's prospective ordinands concerning their marital history and the question always comes up, one way or another, when clergy attend interviews for posts. Whether officially or not the disclosure that a clergyperson has been divorced and has subsequently remarried (or, to be honest, just divorced) will have an adverse effect on his or her career in the church. Many selection committees will not consider a divorced priest and it is only very recently that a priest, who is married to a divorced person, has been allowed to become a bishop.

There is no such thing as equivalence. All situations are unique. The drawing of parallels can never be an exact science. Rather it can only be poetic.
