Well it does over here. I try to never buy it in the US since it's hella expensive here. I was lucky to score 240 sachets at Tesco in Salisbury for 6.99 pounds. Over here it was $13 for 80.
This belief was strong well into the 1950s, at least in my home town. I was beaten by a nun (she even broke a few tiny bones)for a week before my family finally took me out of that school.
