In the Rossetti Annunciation (which I love, BTW), does anyone know the significance of the painted lily (on the red stand) which matches the lily Gabriel is giving the BVM (symbol of Being In Trouble, giving Mary her "Oh Sh*t!" expression)?
The white lilly symbolises purity. On the stand appears to be a red stole. Red stands for martyrdom. Maybe this alludes to the future death of the pure Christ or maybe Rossetti is giving priesthood to Mary and the stole stands for her future suffering. Maybe it's about the pain of childbirth and the pain involved in being a mother. I don't know.
a wonderful blending! Beautiful and effective, thanks!

ReplyDeleteI wondered that as well, JCF. I couldn't make sense of tis presence at all. Do we have a "local" art historian in the house?
