As an act of Christian witness and as a Christian response to the obscene acts of the "official" Anglican church in Uganda at David Kato's funeral, every province of the Anglican Communion should hold a memorial service for David in which he will be shown the respect due to him, his family and friends.

COMMUNION FOR THIS?
From SAN DIEGO GAY AND LESBIAN NEWS:
Ten miles from a Ugandan blood-stained home, 300 friends, fellow activists from the LGBT community, his mourning mother and family joined foreign dignitaries and embassy staff to pay their respects to David Kato.
Since Kato was an Anglican, the local parish church of Nagojje was responsible for his funeral rites to be read from the Book of Common Prayer. Although tributes have been pouring into the Kato family from President Barack Obama and other international leaders, the Church of Uganda sent no priest, no bishop, but a Lay Reader to conduct the service.
Bishop Christopher Senyonjo arrived in his purple cassock accompanied by his wife Mary and let the master of ceremonies know he would like to say a few words at some point in the service. He was going to read a message from Frank Mughisu of Sexual Minorities Uganda (SMUG) where David worked tirelessly since 2004.
As an excommunicated bishop of the Church of Uganda, Christopher has no standing in the official hierarchy of the church. The Lay Reader began to make inappropriate remarks condemning homosexuality quite graphically and stating the Church of Uganda’s position that homosexuality was a sin and against the Bible.
The crowd began to cheer him on and the bishop described the event as turning into an anti-gay rally. The bishop was never called upon to speak. He felt for the LGBT community having to suffer yet another public humiliation.
The Church of Uganda, a member of the Anglican family of churches to which I belong, took a pastoral opportunity for healing and reconciliation with family members and LGBT people and allies and turned the event into an anti-gay political rally. Following this horrific incident with the Lay Reader who condemned the LGBT community, Bishop Christopher, as a bishop of the church and wearing his purple cassock, walked behind the coffin carried by David’s friends and family to the graveside. There, although he was disinvited by the Church to speak at the funeral, he found a way to bring words of comfort to the mourners and said the final blessing over David’s battered remains.
In this one sad occasion, we can see there are two churches in Uganda and indeed elsewhere. The bishop was horrified by what he witnessed from his fellow Christians. Yet, it was good that Christopher was there. He told me he was honored to be there and though was not welcomed to speak to the whole assembly, had the final word of love and peace for David. May he rest in peace.
COMMENT: When you consider what had just happened to his fellow campaigner for justice you have to come to the conclusion that Bishop Christopher Senyonjo is one of the bravest people on the planet. That this courage comes from his understanding and love of the Gospel keeps me proud of the name Christian. If it was not for living saints (and I'm not exaggerating in calling him that) like Bishop Christopher I would have disowned the name of Christian out of embarrassment a long time ago.
In Dublin, the Anglican primates have spent most of the week talking about their position in the church and what being "first among equals" (yes they actually brought that despotic phrase up themselves) means in respect of their leadership role. I would humbly suggest that they s.t.f.u. and learn what episcopal leadership is about from Bishop Christopher.
And what would they learn from him? A man, in a loud purple shirt, who walked behind a gay man's coffin in the most homophobic country on earth and then spoke to the mourners at the graveside in front of the hateful Ugandan press?
They would learn that actions come before words and not the other way around when you truly walk with God.

A blonde calls her boyfriend and says, "Please come over here and help me. I have a killer jigsaw puzzle, and I can't figure out how to get started."
Her boyfriend asks, "What is it supposed to be when it's finished?"
The blonde says, "According to the picture on the box, it's a rooster."
Her boyfriend decides to go over and help with the puzzle. She lets him in and shows him where she has the puzzle spread all over the table. He studies the pieces for a moment, then looks at the box, then turns to her and says, "First of all, no matter what we do, we're not going to be able to assemble these pieces into anything resembling a rooster."
He takes her hand and says, "Secondly, I want you to relax. Let's have a nice cup of tea, and then," he said with a deep sigh .... ......., "Let's put all the Corn Flakes back in the box."

SOMETIMES IT IS TOO LATE
The Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr Rowan Williams, who is currently in Dublin for the Primates’ meeting, has made the following statement regarding the murder of the gay human rights activist David Kato Kisulle in Uganda:
“The brutal murder of David Kato Kisule, a gay human rights activist, is profoundly shocking. Our prayers and deep sympathy go out for his family and friends - and for all who live in fear for their lives. Whatever the precise circumstances of his death, which have yet to be determined, we know that David Kato Kisule lived under the threat of violence and death. No one should have to live in such fear because of the bigotry of others. Such violence has been consistently condemned by the Anglican Communion worldwide. This event also makes it all the more urgent for the British Government to secure the safety of LGBT asylum seekers in the UK. This is a moment to take very serious stock and to address those attitudes of mind which endanger the lives of men and women belonging to sexual minorities.”
COMMENT: No. That moment was right at the beginning of your tour of duty when Jeffrey John was appointed Bishop of Oxford. But please, go ahead and bolt the door, even though the horse has bolted. It might just keep the stable rats locked up. And then listen to that American woman who is with you and ask if you can borrow her bollocks for a while.

CANADIAN CATHOLIC BISHOPS
STICK TO MISSIONARY POSITION
From THE NATIONAL POST:
Canadian Catholic bishops are cautioning married couples to not get too focused on sexual acts other than intercourse, calling them a potential misuse of sex that ignore God’s intentions.
A pastoral letter released this week by the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops calls on married couples to lead “chaste” lives — not meaning “celibate” but approaching sex with “purity of mind as well as body” and respecting the dignity of the other person.
“That is why the sexual act has to be unitive and procreative and why some kinds of activity are not chaste,” the letter said. “Though pleasure may be present, some acts are a misuse of sex when they fall short of what God intended.”

THE PRAYER LIST - 28TH. JANUARY 2011
From THE NEW YORK TIMES:
Nelson Mandela, the beloved but increasingly frail hero of South African democracy, remained hospitalized for a third day on Friday for what his foundation called “routine tests.”
COMMENT: It is only to be expected that a 92 year old man will spend some time in hospital. Hopefully these "routine tests" are just that and Nelson will soon be back home with his family enjoying the rest of his life. But the heroes of South Africa's successful campaign for democracy, Nelson Mandela and Desmond Tutu are both not in the best of health and one day they will not be with us. We pray that the people of South Africa will have the confidence to continue their commitment to justice and equality even after they have said their farewells to those living symbols of their great achievements so far.
From THE WASHINGTON POST:
BAGHDAD - Violent protests erupted in a Shiite neighborhood here Thursday after a powerful car bomb ripped through a funeral ceremony, killing 48 people and wounding 121 in the latest in a string of attacks across the country that is destabilizing Iraq's new government even before it has completely formed.
***
We continue to pray for all those effected by the brutal assassination of Ugandan LGBT rights hero, David Kato. We rejoice that so many politicians have immediately denounced this obscenity and the institutionalised hatred that made it not only possible, but inevitable. We pray that religious leaders will find the godliness within themselves to not only join in with this chorus of outrage but, especially Rowan Williams who is, at present, very much part of the problem, but start behaving in a way that will reduce the chances of it happening again.

FURTHER TO THE ITEM BELOW
COMMENT: At the moment the Church of England expects their non-stipendary (self-supporting) priests to work for nothing AND give any money they earn from funerals etc. straight to the diocese. House for duty priests work ridiculous hours for a roof over their head worth far less than the stipend they would be paid for the hours they put in if they were on a stipend.
My suggestion is, that in certain circumstances, the money raised by the church the self-supporting priest is attached to should go to the priest and not the diocese up to the level of a full stipend. This would encourage new ways of being church and new ways of being a priest. Both the congregation and the priest would have incentive. Not just financial but also the "lets be successful just to spite them" sort of incentive.
COLLECTIVE NOUNS:
AN "ARROGANCE" OF ARCHDEACONS
When a parish becomes vacant in Durham Diocese, only clergy in the diocese are allowed to apply for the job. If nobody in the diocese will touch it with a barge poll they allow outside applicants to go for it.
Before Christmas they advertised a parish post in Hartlepool on the diocesan website clearly stating that the job was open to outside candidates. The reason it had to be offered to outsiders was that although the church council had voted to allow women priests to preside at the eucharist, they had also voted not to allow women priests to become their vicar.
I could have lived with that and hopefully would have changed their views if I had got the job. So, I researched the post and then spent the usual couple of hours or so putting my application together.
That was a month or so ago. This evening I received this email:
I really don't think I will be able to carry on much longer.
It is becoming patently obvious that I will never be a priest again. Mrs MP decided this months ago and has been telling me so regularly. My choice now is whether or not life is worth living if the purpose of my life has been taken from me. I can, as I have said before, see nothing ahead of me worth sticking around for. I'm not saying this out of depression (I have never had suicidal thoughts), it's just a matter of cold logic. The Church is treating me as if I have no worth as a human being and, perhaps, they are right.

CATCH 22
Here's interesting.
The Church of England has a clergy appointments adviser. If you are looking for a full time post you can go and see him. He is particularly popular with priests working abroad who are looking to move back to England. At an interview he draws up a C.V. with you and he then sends your details to the bishops every month. This is a very good way of bringing your details to bishops especially as a lot of posts are never advertised in the church press, mainly due to the cost.
However, there is a problem. The one thing that the clergy appointment adviser insists upon before seeing you is that you have the full support of your current bishop.
You would have thought that this office would be ideal for providing help to those priests who have fell victim to the personal prejudices of their bishops. But, no, it's just another way that the Church of England makes sure that the bishops retain all power.
The Church of England and The Democratic People's Republic of Korea have a lot in common with each other.

THE PRAYER LIST - 27TH. JANUARY 2011
From REUTERS:
An explosion at a small underground coal mine in northeast Colombia killed 20 workers on Wednesday in the latest accident to hit Latin America's mining industry. There is little chance of the remaining 12 or so miners being alive. The mining regulator Ingeominas said the latest blast, in Norte de Santander province, was probably caused by methane gas.
"I hope (God) favors me with another type of job to support my family, not this kind of mining in a murderous mine," an unnamed miner told a local television station.
Other miners, one on the verge of tears, said they feared all their colleagues were dead. Local media reported there had been other deadly blasts at the same mine in the past.
From BOX TURTLE BULLETIN:
Ugandan LGBT advocate David Kato Kisulle was murdered today (26th. January) at his home in Kampala. Frank Mugisha of Sexual Minorities Uganda (SMUG) has confirmed that the David’s body was identified at a hospital. He was reportedly beaten in the skull with a hammer at his home. Witnesses told police that a man entered Kato’s home in Mukono at around 1 p.m. hit him twice in the head and departed in a vehicle. Kato died on his way to Kawolo hospital.
David Kato was a spokesperson for Sexual Minorities Uganda (SMUG) and one of the plaintiffs in the successful lawsuit seeking a permanent injunction against the Ugandan tabloid Rolling Stone. Kato was one of three applicants who had been named by the tabloid under a headline tagged “Hang Them!” His photo appeared on the tabloid’s front cover.

As I seek a new call I feel like I'm seeking a special kind of Search Committee as well. I'm hoping my resume/Personal Information Form lands in the hands of people:
who are not there to maintain the status quo
who see their task as completing a team, not filling a slot
who are on the committee because they are visionaries rather than power clingers
who are averse to cookie cutter candidates
who are mostly impressed with what God can do
As I leap into this adventure called The Search I covet your prayers. And tips. This is one of those seasons of life when faith truly rules.

BLOG NOTICE
I've got a lot on at the moment. I am prioritising St. Laika's and the Prayer List but other blogging will be done if I have time after I've sorted out the personal stuff.
BLAH! BLAH! BLAH!
Réunion des Primats - Briefing No.1

ANOTHER GOOD MAN DONE GONE
Country Music Hall of Famer Charley Louvin passed away this morning at his home in Wartrace, Tennessee, after battling pancreatic cancer for the last several months.

I expect that most English people between the age of 50 and 70, who are into popular music, were turned onto real country music after listening to the Rolling Stones' albums of the late 1960s and early 70s. Keith Richards was turned onto real country music by Gram Parsons (a singer so far up MadPriest's list of greatest ever musicians that you would need a telescope to see him). The greatest influence on Gram parson's vocal style were the Louvin Brothers. Not only did he adore the brothers' harmonies but he also studied them and learnt them. You can here them on the International Submarine Band recordings, during his stint in The Byrds and when he was solo or duetting with Emmylou.
Thanks to the maverick deejay, Andy Kershaw, I started exploring the roots of Parsons' music in the early 1980s and I soon came across the recordings of the Louvin Brothers. I immediately fell in love with their harmonies and their sincerity and I have been a fan of theirs and old time country gospel music ever since.
The Louvin Brothers split up in 1963 having performed together for 32 years. Ira, died on June 20, 1965 when a drunken driver struck his car in Williamsburg, Missouri. Charlie hit the road as a solo act and became a fixture on the Grand Ole Opry stage. For the last ten years or so, Charlie has been the grand ole man of traditional country music, revered by the musicians of the "Oh, Brother, Where Art Thou" generation and he never stopped performing. His latest album was released just a couple of months ago and he was booked to play a couple of gigs in Nashville next month.
My tribute selection on the jukebox consists of four Louvin Brother tracks from back in the day and then three songs recorded by Charlie in the last few years. In fact, the last track of my selection is the last track on his last album, a record on which Charlie worked through his great sadness that the country he had always been so proud of was still sending its sons and daughters overseas to fight in wars.
Rest in peace, Charlie Loudermilk.
There won't be war anymore where you are heading.

THE PRAYER LIST - 26TH. JANUARY 2011
From THE GUARDIAN:
Suicide attacks targeting religious processions by minority Shias in Pakistan's two largest cities killed at least 15 people and injured 70 today (Tuesday). In Lahore a teenage bomber detonated his device after being challenged by police at the edge of the old city, killing at least 13 people. The police had been checking Shia marchers headed to a procession marking the end of the holy month of Muharram. The Punjab law minister, Rana Sanaullah, said the bomber was about 14.
From THE BBC:
Two people have been killed and several others injured in an explosion on a bus in the Philippine capital, Manila. Police said the blast was believed to have been caused by a bomb placed under a passenger seat in the middle of the bus. One official said the blast was so powerful it blew a hole in a nearby concrete fence.
From THE BBC:
Moscow is holding a day of mourning for the victims of an apparent suicide bombing at Domodedovo airport. TV channels and radio stations suspended entertainment programmes, while mourning services are being held in the capital's churches. Thirty-five people were killed and 110 were injured in the blast at the arrivals area on Monday.

From THE WASHINGTON POST:
CAIRO: Up to 200 protesters have been detained during clashes with thousands of Tunisia-inspired demonstrators demanding an end to President Hosni Mubarak's authoritarian rule. Two protesters were killed and some 250 wounded.
From JCF:
If you would all please pray (again) for my friend Cath (w/ the Stage 4 metastatic lung cancer).

The last couple of weeks have not been a good start to the year. In the middle of my illness last week it became apparent that Miss Tilly, who shared my life for the last 10 years, and my sister’s life for 6 year’s before that was considerably more unwell than I was. Last Tuesday I had to take her to the vet for the last time and make the horrible decision that the time had come for her to be put to sleep.
Please do read Miss Tilly's full obituary written and posted by Kelvin, with much love, on his blog.

From Strangelove:
Thanks to you for the prayers - the bone scan was negative, no sign of metastases in any bones, so that's a good start. Next, scans using radio-isotopes to locate any tumors to see just where they are. That will determine the treatment, but either of the possibilities will keep me going for many years, so it is all good. I really do feel very much at peace with this at present, a great gift indeed.

VIRTUALLY AN IDIOT
From THE MAIL:
The Pope yesterday warned youngsters not to choose a virtual world on the internet over real-life experiences. He insisted they were in danger of alienation and detachment from reality by excessive use of digital media. Although Pope Benedict XVI did not name sites such as Facebook or Twitter, he alluded to ‘sharing’, ‘friends’ and ‘profiles’ – jargon commonly used on the social networking sites.
The 83-year-old leader of the Roman Catholic Church claimed it was a mistake to seek more virtual friends than real ones when so many internet users created public profiles that were either self-indulgent or plainly false.
COMMENT: Ah! He's obviously checked out Mimi's profile.

SULKING BISHOPS STRAY FROM GOD'S WORD
It's the primatial, silly season again. The Grand Tufti is throwing a party in Dublin but a load of his mates won't be going because he's gone and invited a girl.
Basically, the sulky archbishops won't attend any church gigs unless they get to look at the guest list upfront and have the right to blackball anybody on the list who doesn't pass their acceptability test. They like to claim that this test of theirs is based on good, Biblical teaching, which it may or may not be. However, the actions they take if they don't get their own way are not only non-Biblical, they are actually completely opposite to Biblical teaching.
Hospitality is probably the most defined duty in Jewish and Christian scriptures. In the Old Testament, failure to provide hospitality to friend or stranger is a major sin. It goes beyond religious commandment as it is a cornerstone of the social life of the community. A man who offers unconditional hospitality, such as Tobit, is regarded as a good man by the good people of his community. The man who refuses to do his duty in providing hospitality is regarded by the righteous as an enemy of God, a fact that is emphasised over and over again the writings of both the major and minor prophets. In the New Testament Jesus takes the already generous duty of hospitality incumbent on God's chosen people and increases its remit to apply to absolutely everybody. He eats with sinners and he even offers bread to the man whose betrayal will lead to his crucifixion.
The bishops boycotting the primates' get together in Dublin are enemies of God when they take it upon themselves to restrict the hospitality collegially offered to their colleagues. But, for them, there is a Biblical sting in the tail of their actions that may end up with them being actually cast out of the kingdom of God.
When Jesus sends his disciples out he tells them to accept the hospitality of the people in the towns they visit. But he tells them, if the people they visit fail to offer hospitality they are to walk away whilst wiping the dust of the place off their feet.
The arrogant primates of the Anglican Communion who put prejudice before hospitality are placing themselves in the position of those who behaved inhospitably to Christ's disciples. It is unlikely that "the girl" the Grand Tufti has invited to his party will wipe dust off her feet no matter how much she is insulted, because she is a Christian who takes the words of Jesus very seriously, in deed. But God might. If God deduces that in not showing hospitality to those God's son died for, the schism minded bishops are disrespecting the son, then who knows what God might do. And if what God might do is anything like what Jesus said God might do in such a situation then the gatekeepers could be spending eternity gazing up from hell at the bosom of Abraham. Of course, these Biblically based boycotters won't be worried about this in the slightest. These words of Christ are recorded in the Bible and they don't appear to have read that particular book; at least, not any of it after Leviticus.

If the number of comments on any one TwitFace post gets to fifty, all those who have commented will receive 500 days off purgatory. Should the comments ever reach one hundred I will grant all the participants a general plenary. Now, you don't get offers like that on Facebook!

With the help of Cathy, Ann, Mimi and lots more of you we are already up to a regular congregation of about a hundred. This is good, but let's make it even better. If you dare, and you are in a position to, you could advertise St. Laika's on your church news sheet. This might be useful if you do not have regular weekday services at your place and for members of your congregations whose mobility is restricted.

THE PRAYER LIST - 25TH. JANUARY 2011
From THE BBC:
An explosion has ripped through Moscow's Domodedovo airport - the busiest in the Russian capital, killing at least 35 people. Some 170 people were injured in the blast, which reports suggest was the work of a suicide bomber.
From REUTERS:
Emergency services were called to a semi-detached house in Hulland Ward near Ashbourne shortly before midnight on Monday and discovered a serious fire.
Four children, two girls, aged six and two, and two boys, aged nine and four, died in the blaze. A 45-year-old woman was taken to the Royal Derby Hospital suffering from smoke inhalation.

There is a new study about women and how they feel about their asses; the results were pretty interesting:
30% of women think their ass is too fat............
10% of women think their ass is too skinny...........
The remaining 60% say they don't care, they love him, he's a good man and they wouldn't trade him for the world.
COMMENT: Okay, I fess up. OCICBW... is blatantly sexist.
But, you have to admit, it has always been inclusively sexist.

NEW FRIENDS
Here are a couple more bloggers who are about to have their reputations ruined by association with MadPriest. The least you can do to make up for this a little bit is check them out and, if you dig their blogs, add them to your blogrolls.
ONE CANNOT HAVE TOO LARGE A PARTY:
Cobbled together by
babelicious, Episcopal
priest, Penelopepiscopal.
"This blog is my public attempt at daily prayer and reflection, as well as a venue for my photography. I like to write, and I like to take pictures, and I like the richness and variety in the prayers of our Episcopal / Anglican tradition, so they all come together here. The photographs are all mine, and I chose each to go with the reading - sometimes I decide on the photograph first and then write. They're meant to go together in some way, so let them play in your imagination."
UNDERCOVER NUN, who is one of the contributors at THE THEOLOGY DINER, has her own blog which can be found HERE.

THE PRAYER LIST - 23RD. JANUARY 2011
From ELAINE:
Please add Strangelove to the OCICBW prayer list. He's going in this afternoon (21st. January) for the first of tests related to recurrent prostate cancer. According to his doctor, "This is not a runaway train." His doctor believes that the recurrence can be contained and inhibited at this stage, and that Strangelove will live for many more years. Reliable sources have told us recently that most men die with prostate ca instead of it. We hope and pray that this will be the case. Still, knowing that you all are praying for him will give us much comfort and joy.

From JCF:
Took my job test today. About 150 or so people - everyone looking as knowledgeable, professional (and desperate) as me. Test was hard I'll hear results in about 3 weeks. Continuing prayers appreciated!

Posted by Paul at BYZIGENOUS BUDDHAPALIAN:
I just received distressing news from the Rev. Pamela Cranston, Vicar of St Cuthbert's, Oakland:
"The Rev. Connie Hartquist Jacobs phoned me early this morning to share the distressing news that her husband, Tom Jacobs, a valuable and faithful member of this parish, has been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. They went to Kaiser hospital in Fresno last night and after extensive tests, he was diagnosed early this morning. Apparently, Tom has a very large mass on his bile duct. She [said] they would be learning more about his case as the doctors do more tests."
Please keep Tom and Connie in your fervent prayers at this time.
