MADPRIEST'S THOUGHT FOR THE DAY

God is "I AM."

Those who seek to be divine must define themselves
by who they are, not by who they are not.

THE PRAYER LIST - 30TH. APRIL 2011

Our longstanding friend, Göran Koch-Swahne, has to remain in hospital for another one or two weeks. We continue to pray most fervently for his speedy and full recovery.

From REUTERS:

Syrian human rights group Sawasiah said it had the names of a total of 62 people killed during protests in Deraa, Rustun, Latakia, Homs and the town of Qadam, near Damascus. Friday's bloodshed came after demonstrators across the country again defied heavy military deployments, mass arrests and a ruthless crackdown on the biggest popular challenge to 48 years of authoritarian Baath Party rule.

From PRESSTV:

Two servicemen and two civilians have been killed and at least seven people wounded in southern Yemen during a general strike called by anti-government protesters.

From ALJAZEERA:

On Friday, at least 11 people were killed in a string of bombings and shootings in central Iraq, a day after a suicide bomber killed 10 worshippers in a Shia mosque. In Baghdad, a bomb went off in a predominantly Shia neighbourhood, killing three police commandos and one civilian and wounding 24 policemen and five civilians, police and medical officials said. As police arrived on the scene to investigate, a second bomb exploded. In the mixed Sunni-Shia province of Diyala, gunmen stormed the home of Bashir Mutlak, a Sunni imam in Imam Waiss village. They killed the imam, his wife and their 11-year-old daughter. In the town of Buhruz four Sunni brothers aged between 20 and 35 were shot dead by gunmen wearing police uniforms.

It has to be admitted, much as I always had my eyes glued to the screen when she was spinning around in next to nothing, Lynda is one heck of a better singer than she ever was an actress. This new release from her is a really good album and 100% JCF friendly.

REPUBLICAN RESNUBLICAN
MADPRIEST DOES THE ROYAL WEDDING

Here is a service of evening prayer on the occasion of the Royal Wedding with MadPriest weaving his usual musical magic.

MP3 File

The iTune link and the text for the service,  should you wish to join in, can be found at ST. LAIKA'S . Otherwise just sit back and enjoy (or gnash your teeth if you're a miserable, spoilsport traitor).

These were my favourite moments. I love the photo of the ordinary couple in the middle. My, we have come a long way since the Charles and Diana gig.

MADPRIEST'S THOUGHT FOR THE DAY

The Royal Wedding in London today will cost millions of pounds. Most of this will be paid for out of the taxes paid by the British public, including those who have no interest in the Royal Family.

Each year the cost of policing football matches in the UK so that spectators are safe costs millions of pounds Most of this is paid for out of the taxes paid by the British public, including those who have no interest in football.

Every year millions of pounds are given out as subsidies to the arts. All of this is paid for out of the taxes paid by the British public, including those who prefer to play darts in their local pub to visiting Tate Modern.

It is a marvellous thing to live in a country where people are prepared to give their money so that others may be happy even when the events paid for bring no happiness to themselves.

THE PRAYER LIST - 29TH. APRIL 2011

The wedding today is, above all, an occasion of great joy, especially for the couple themselves. We pray that one day soon this opportunity for Godly happiness, will be made possible for all couples who wish to publicly acknowledge their love for each other and to promise to "keep" each other through all the joys and trials of life.

Morocco has launched an investigation into a bomb attack on a cafe in Marrakesh that left 16 people dead including 11 foreigners. The death toll rose overnight as two of the injured died of their wounds. Some 20 others were hurt when the blast hit the Argana cafe in Djemaa el-Fna square, a major tourist spot. A Marrakesh official said a suicide bomber could have caused the blast.

From THE NEW YORK TIMES:

A military court in Bahrain sentenced four Shiite Muslim protesters to death on Thursday in the killing of two policemen last month during demonstrations against the Sunni Muslim-ruled government, Bahrain’s national news agency reported. Three other activists who were also on trial in the same case received sentences of life in prison.

Human rights activists in Bahrain voiced fears that the verdicts could generate a new wave of protests in the tiny Persian Gulf kingdom. They also argued that the trial was rendered unfair by a series of legal abuses, including the arrest of one of the defendants’ lawyers, Mohammed al-Tajer, one of Bahrain’s most prominent attorneys. The suspects were also barred from meeting with their families, and the news media were not allowed to cover the trial.

From BBC NEWS:

Riots have broken out in Uganda's capital, Kampala, over the treatment of opposition leader Kizza Besigye. People have been blocking roads and burning tyres, and police have been firing rubber bullets and tear gas.

Mr Besigye sought medical treatment after being tear-gassed in his car and bundled roughly into a truck when he was arrested on Thursday. It was his fourth detention this month for his participation in a "walk-to-work" campaign over high prices.

NEW CRUEL SPORT POSTED ON YOUTUBE

This is awful. It seems that the depravity of the blood sports lobby knows no bounds. They have taken dog fighting and cock fighting and merged them together into a new obscene spectacle that they are calling "Duck vs. Pup." You won't want to look at this but you must. You need to be informed so that you can inform the world and put a stop to this evil thing.

Thanks to Tracie for sending this in to MadPriest Towers.

From Suzer:

Would you please include a prayer request for all those suffering the devastation of yesterday's storms here in the Southeast? We were spared, thank God, but it was a wild night of tornado warnings going off continually. The twisters hit north of where we live in Georgia. Alabama was hardest hit. I'm including a link to a video from Tuscaloosa, Alabama. This was a huge, huge tornado. I've never seen one like it. I don't even know if our Birmingham office is open today -- we haven't heard from them yet. And we are only beginning to take a look at the damage in Georgia, as our storms hit overnight in the dark, so assessing the destruction is starting now that daylight has arrived.

From REUTERS:

Tornadoes and violent storms ripped through seven southern states, killing at least 284 people in the country's deadliest series of twisters in nearly four decades. The clusters of powerful tornadoes - more than 160 reported in total - combined with storms to cut a swath of destruction heading west to east over several days. In some areas, whole neighborhoods were flattened, cars flipped over and trees and power lines felled, leaving tangled wreckage. At least 184 people died in Alabama, the worst-hit state which suffered massive destruction of property.

HONOURED PRIEST SACKED BY CARDINAL

From THE CHICAGO TRIBUNE:

Cardinal Francis George has removed the outspoken priest, Father Michael Pfleger, from St. Sabina parish and has suspended his "sacramental faculties as a priest."

On March 11, 2011, Father Pfleger met with Cardinal George, where he was asked to take over as president of Leo High School. On March 19, 2011, Father Pfleger sent a letter to Cardinal George saying he was neither qualified nor experienced to be president of a high school, but that he was willing to help Leo High School in any way that he could.

In a letter to Father Pfleger, dated today, George wrote:

"A Catholic priest's inner life is governed by his promises, motivated by faith and love, to live chastely as a celibate man and to obey his bishop. Breaking either promise destroys his vocation and wounds the Church. Many love and admire you because of your dedication to your people," the cardinal wrote. Now, however, I am asking you to take a few weeks to pray over your priestly commitments in order to come to mutual agreement on how you understand personally the obligations that make you a member of the Chicago presbyterate and of the Catholic Church. With this letter, your ministry as pastor of Saint Sabina Parish and your sacramental faculties as a priest of the Archdiocese are suspended."

The cardinal ended the letter by saying, "This conflict is not between you and me; it's between you and the Church that ordained you a priest, between you and the faith that introduced you to Christ and gives you the right to preach and pastor in his name. If you now formally leave the Catholic Church and her priesthood, it's your choice and no one else's. You are not a victim of anyone or anything other than your own statements."
(Ah! I've come across that particular episcopal get out clause. It's about as believable as the old chestnut, "This is going to hurt me more than it is going to hurt you.")

During the flap over his possible assignment to Leo, Pfleger appeared on the "Smiley & West" public radio program that he had been banned from speaking at events in the archdiocese and blamed pressure from conservative Catholics and the National Rifle Association for his most recent clash with George.

"I want to try to stay in the Catholic Church," Pfleger said. "If they say 'You either take this principalship of (Leo High) or pastorship there or leave,' then I'll have to look outside the church. I believe my calling is to be a pastor. I believe my calling is to be a voice for justice. I believe my calling is to preach the Gospel. In or out of the church, I'm going to continue to do that."

On the radio, Pfleger said conservative Catholics want to return St. Sabina, a mostly African-American parish, to the way it was before he got there nearly three decades ago and silence what they believe to be progressive messages from the pulpit. For a couple of years, he said he has been the target of petitions and letter-writing campaigns by the NRA. Letters are often copied to the cardinal, Pfleger said.

"The NRA ... says I've been much too vocal about assault weapons and much too vocal about guns being registered and being accountable to gun owners," Pfleger said on the radio. "So all that combined and I guess the cardinal didn't have anything to do one morning and decided he wanted to get rid of me again."

But in his letter, the cardinal said he had no ulterior motives in wanting Pfleger at Leo.

SOCIETY OF FRIENDS TAKEN
OFF AXIS OF EVIL LIST

From THE CHICAGO CURRENT:

The Chicago Police Department sent an undercover officer to a meeting of the American Friends Service Committee, a Quaker-affiliated group whose mission is to "foster understanding and reconciliation, promote economic development and food security, educate the public on issues such as nuclear disarmament and the realities of military service." The infiltration came in 2002 as Chicago was preparing to host the Trans-Atlantic Business Dialogue, a meeting that had led to riots in other locations.

Yesterday, the city settled a lawsuit brought by the ACLU and the service committee, paying them $12,500. The city's law department continues to maintain that it was appropriate to send an undercover cop to a service committee meeting.

SAM HARRIS - NO CLEVERER THAN THE REST OF US

The NEW STATESMAN has posted the complete transcript of Jonathan Derbyshire's interview with Sam Harris back on 11th. April, 2011.  It is interesting.

Harris is just another self-proclaiming messiah who seems to believe that if you make a statement forcefully enough and then move quickly on to the next point, then what you have just said is a fact.

For example, his argument against the truth claims of religions is that science has disproved them. This is just not true for one simple reason - unless you know absolutely everything there is to be known, including the fact that you know everything, any truth claim you make is provisional, and that goes for both scientific claims and theological claims. We can say that, given the information in our possession, the earth appears to go round the sun. What we can't say is that it is a definite fact. It could be that from a different perspective the sun goes round the earth or, more likely, that nothing goes around nothing. Maybe, scientists in the future will discover that all is illusion or that we create our own reality - they are long shots (I do not personally think them very likely), but they are possibilities, even within our present day grasp of mathematics.

Furthermore, Harris arrogantly believes that scientific discovery takes precedence over everything else. But  his is an arbitrary hierarchy that favours his wage packet and which is very much open to being rejected. For example, if we want to travel to the moon or increase food production we would be wise to take scientific claims on these matters very seriously. But if we want to be happy, no matter how much knowledge scientists may have about the working of our brains, we would be wiser to ignore scientists who, on the whole, can be a pretty unimaginative lot. A better choice for guiding us in our pursuit of happiness would be a creator of stories or a mystic.

But it's when he starts talking about morality that Harris shows his lack of philosophical expertise.

I think there are universal principles that we should want to understand, but that are not necessarily good for us. We could recognise universal propensities which current cultures can't fully eradicate, which we would want to eradicate if we could. Let's say, a tendency for tribal violence. Or racism. Let's say all cultures are, at bottom, slightly xenophobic, or greatly xenophobic, and there are just degrees of the problem. I think our only reasonable goal now is to try and build a global civilisation that can allow 9 billion people ultimately to flourish, so xenophobia is something that we want to get rid of. So the question for science is: what's the optimum way to raise children, create political institutions and to cooperate with one another so as to mitigate the congenital problem we all have with xenophobia, regardless of culture?

It sounds reasonable, but only because we are all informed by the Golden Rule, which in turn is given validity by religion. It is, in fact, a very dubious take on things. Take another look at his statement: "I think our only reasonable goal now is to try and build a global civilisation that can allow 9 billion people ultimately to flourish, so xenophobia is something that we want to get rid of."

The first half of this sentence is arbitrary. The obvious question it begs is "Why?"

The second half of his statement most probably defeats the moral claim he has just made. If the only reason to act morally is to bring benefit and continuation to our species then, at this moment in time, bloodthirsty tribalism and nationalism probably should be encouraged. Decreasing the population of the world by about 75% would give our species (and all the other species we share the planet with) a far higher chance of long term survival. A few major world wars would help us to achieve such an aim and within a timescale that might just save us from the global extinction the 9 billion human inhabitants are so intent on making a reality in the not too distant future.

You cannot get rid of god unless you create a new god, because somebody has to decide what is morally right and what isn't. Someone has to prioritise. Someone has to choose what it is that has to be sacrificed for the common good. Someone has to decide what the common good actually is. To be quite honest, if we must have a human god, then I would rather we chose a fantasist, such as Terry Pratchett, over a scientist any day of the week. Don't forget, yesterday we celebrated the 25th. anniversary of exactly what happens when we allow scientists to be our gods.

It is very possible that human beings made up all the rules of morality that we regard as self-evident or from god. If they did it was for a reason and most anthropologists would, I'm sure, agree with that. Maybe we all suspend disbelief for the "common good" but if this is the case then the "new atheists" are playing with fire. They are saying that scientific truth is more important than the common good and that all must be sacrificed for it.

The only reason why human beings are still acting, some of the time, according to the Golden Rule is that most of us, including the new atheists, are inherently attached to the religious thinking of our forebears. If Sam Harris, and his tediously pedantic and fact based crowd, have their way, this situation will soon pass and then people (some of them with really big guns) will ask themselves the question, "Why," and will, quite reasonably reply, "Why not?"

How do I know this to be true? Because this is exactly what has happened in the past. Religious people can be cruel but, if they are truly religious and not just pretending, then they do have to go through the process of justifying their actions in accordance with their faith before invading the Holy Land. Cruel atheists don't have to go to such time consuming trouble. They can do exactly what they want for whatever reason they want whenever they want.

Ah, well, at least the end will come quicker under the new dispensation.

THE TRUE COST OF A BOILING KETTLE

From BLOOMBERG:

Radiation readings at Japan’s Fukushima Dai-Ichi station rose to the highest since an earthquake and tsunami knocked out cooling systems, impeding efforts to contain the worst nuclear crisis since Chernobyl.

Two robots sent into the reactor No. 1 building at the plant yesterday took readings as high as 1,120 millisierverts of radiation per hour, Junichi Matsumoto, a general manager at Tokyo Electric Power Co., said today. That’s more than four times the annual dose permitted to nuclear workers at the stricken plant.

Yesterday was the 25th. anniversary of the explosion at Chernobyl. I remember being pretty damned concerned at the time, especially when the nuclear clouds floated above my head. It has always been my personal opinion that the damage to Europe and its inhabitants was a lot higher than the authorities have been letting on. Last night I watched a documentary on the disaster that confirmed my suspicions.

I had heard about the plant workers who died immediately after the explosion and I have met many young Ukrainian people suffering from the physical effects of the long term radiation in the area. What I did not know, until last night, was that thousands upon thousands of the USSR's people sacrificed their lives in the months following the disaster in the clean up operation and to stop an even worse tragedy.

Thousands of miners were brought in to dig a tunnel under the nuclear fire. 25% of them died.

Young airforce pilots flew over the stricken reactor to dump ingots of lead into the fire. Over 60 of them died.

Then there were the bravest of the brave, the reservists who cleared the roof of the plant, manually throwing pieces of rubble off the structure so that it could be buried by robotic vehicles on the ground, because robots were unable to withstand the radiation on the roof. Exposure to the rubble for more than 45 seconds meant almost certain death.

500000 soldiers and civilians washed down the surrounding countryside to neutralise the contamination.

There were also journalists and photographers working around and in the plant to record the disaster and the clear up. Most of them died and the tragedy of this is the fact that the vast majority of their work has "gone missing." But don't shrug your shoulders and say, "Well that's just typical of the Russians," because the governments of both the East and the West conspired together to hide the story of the true magnitude of the disaster from their people in order to avoid panic (and the cynical among us might also add damage to the nuclear industry's profits). This has meant that the vast majority of those who gave their lives or long term health, to keep the rest of us safe have been disappeared and not honoured officially for their heroism.

And, yes, they did make their sacrifices to keep the rest of us safe. If they had not done what they did then there was every chance that molten radioactive material would have broken through the floor of the chamber and on hitting the cold water beneath cause an explosion so great that it would have rendered at least half of Europe uninhabitable and caused maybe millions of deaths.

The world must never forget these "ordinary" people who were completely blameless for the mistakes, pigheadedness and greed that caused the disaster in the first place. They brought redemption to us all. Their courage averted a second disaster that would have turned Europe and most of the western USSR into a nuclear wasteland.

And there was another redemption. The nuclear explosion at Chernobyl was so catastrophic that the Soviet authorities had to call for massive international support. This allowed Gorbachev to bring in the era of glasnost and that eventually led to the pulling down of the iron curtain.

There could have been a third redemption. The governments of the world could have acknowledged the horrific magnitude of the Chernobyl explosion and said, "Never again." Unfortunately, the poisoning of Japan at this moment in time because of an inevitable earthquake shows that, as always, money talked whilst those with all the facts zipped their lips.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

If you have not already read about the recent horrific attack on Chrissy Lee Polis, a transgender woman, at a McDonalds restaurant in Baltimore, go read "I Am NOT Lovin' It" at SCG's WAKE UP AND LIVE blog.

But I warn you, I viewed the video last week, over at Kelli's place, and I found it so distressing that I decided not to post it here. I now think that was a mistake on my part but that's not because the video is not extremely painful to watch.

The demolition of a huge Turkish statue devoted to reconciliation with Armenia has begun, months after the prime minister described it as a "freak". The 30m-high statue - depicting two human figures facing each other - was erected on a mountain in the Turkish city of Kars, near the Armenian border. Local authorities commissioned it several years ago to symbolise an end to decades of enmity and suspicion.

Critics say Prime Minister, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, may have aimed his remarks at nationalists, who are strong in this part of Turkey, ahead of June's parliamentary elections.

Kars once had a large Armenian community, which was annihilated as part of the genocide committed against Armenians by Turkey in 1915.

Catholic Care, a Roman Catholic charity in Leeds, England, has lost its latest appeal against equality laws which allow gay couples to use adoption services. The case has already been rejected by the High Court last year and the Charity Commission. Now the Charity Tribunal has dismissed the charity's appeal.

The tribunal said it would be "a loss to society" if the charity stopped its adoption service but said it was "by no means certain" this would happen. It said it had to balance the risk of the service closing against the "detriment to same-sex couples and the detriment to society generally of permitting the discrimination proposed".

POLY STYRENE DIES AND GOES TO HEAVEN

"We can confirm that the beautiful Poly Styrene, who has been a true fighter, won her battle on Monday evening to go to higher places." (Twitter)

A scene from the life of a mad priest:

30th. April 1978. Victoria Park, London.
100000 people, young/old, black/white, gay/straight.

X-Ray Spex walk on stage.

Poly giggles and says, "Some people say little girls should be seen but not heard."

Then she screams, "But I say, O bondage, up yours!!!!"

Then the greatest saxophone intro of all time and the rest, as they say, is history.

Marianne Joan Elliott-Said
POLY STYRENE

Born: 3rd. July 1957

Died from cancer:
25th. April 2011

Rest in peace, beautiful lady.

MadPriest is very sad tonight.

HOLY VAMPIRES

From CBC NEWS:

The Vatican announced today that blood taken from Pope John Paul II during his final hospitalization will be used as the official relic for veneration after he is beatified on Sunday.

In a statement, the Vatican said four small vials of blood had been taken from John Paul during his final days for a possible transfusion, but were never used. Two of the vials were given to John Paul's private secretary, Cardinal Stanislaw Dziwisz, and another two remained at the Vatican's Bambin Gesu hospital in the care of nuns. One of the hospital vials will be placed in a reliquary and presented Sunday; the other will remain with the nuns.

MADPRIEST'S THOUGHT FOR THE DAY

Pain and love cannot be defined,
they can only be experienced.

The same is true of belief.

JESUS DIED FOR SOMEBODY'S SINS BUT
APPARENTLY NOT THE FAMILY FIRM'S

This morning, on checking through the posts of the bloggers in THE NEIGHBOURHOOD, from the weekend just passed, I came across an inordinate number of bits of drivel going on about Easter Day and Christ being raised from the dead and all that. Every single one of these posts contained revisionist nonsense about joy and celebration. Pah! As if there isn't enough delusional happiness in the world already.    I was disgusted. Many (most likely, all) of these posts were posted by bloggers who are obviously going to burn in hell for all eternity even if they were to repent of their sins and unfeignedly believe the gospel (that's the Book of Deuteronomy for those of you who belong to the wrong sort of church). What on earth have they got to be joyful about?

Enough of this nonsense, already! We were not put on this earth to have fun and I strongly suggest you all go over to the GAFCON blog and read Father Christian's Easter sermon in which he clearly explains the true meaning of Easter. You should PTL that you have this courageous guardian of orthodoxy to whip you back onto the path of self righteousness  every time you decide to run off into the sunny, green pastures of iniquity to enjoy yourselves.

I am, of course, a huge fan of the saintly, Father Christian. He is the nearest thing we have to perfection in this part of the blogosphere. But he is not quite immaculate. I am afraid that we have to face the fact that sometimes he can be too nice and I think that he may be guilty of this in his Easter message. For the real thing you need to harken to the words of the Head of the Family Firm.

From THE TELEGRAPH (Australia):

Anglican Archbishop of Sydney Dr Peter Jensen used his Easter message to oppose euthanasia, saying there was no such thing as a dignified death.

"There is nothing dignified about the pain, helplessness, loss and anxiety of death. It is undignified," he said.

"It takes God's noble, glorious creation of a human being and turns us back to dust. It strips us of achievements, history, honours, dignity and relationships and destroys our bodies."

I think we can all see what Bishop Jensen is scared shitless about.

It's a shame really. If the bloke had spent a bit more time being a pastor among his flock, in stead of spending all his time building up his family's power base, flying around the world in what appears to be a one man mission to completely get rid of the ozone layer above Australia, and dabbling in dodgy financial investments, he would have discovered that death is often extremely dignified considering the circumstances. If he had spent a bit more time studying the Gospels, in stead of the stockmarket, he would have come across the glorious news that because God raised Jesus from the dead our bodies will also be raised from the dead. It's only the material stuff we've acquired during our lifetimes that we won't be taking with us, as far as I can see.

God 1 - Nature 0

Good result!

THE PRAYER LIST - 26TH. APRIL 2011

From JCF:

(Next) Monday (2nd. April), I'm having a Follow-Up Mammogram (because they saw Something Improper on the first). I'm 98% sure I'm fine. But there's that stupid 2%, I can't quite suppress. So spare me a prayerful thought, if you can...

Posted by Kenju at IMAGINE:

This morning on my way to work, I took (Storm) to the vets office, where I learned that she probably had end-stage renal disease, from which there is no recovering. Blood work confirmed that, so I had no alternative other than to authorize them to put her down. This is the third time I have had to do that; one other cat and our dog had to be euthanized. It is one of the hardest things I'll ever have to do. Since the alternative was an animal who would be, at worst, in pain and at best, uncomfortable, there was no choice.

My younger daughter said, "Mom, you've had too much death lately" and I sure have to agree with her. My dearest old human friend and my dearest old animal friend all in the same ten day period.

Storm has been a regular guest star on Kenju's Imagine blog for as long as there has been an Imagine blog. She was almost always beside Kenju as she tapped away on her computer and, although it is obvious that Kenju loves all her animal friends, to be honest, you could tell that Storm occupied a very special place in her affections. I'm going to miss the photos of Storm posing for the camera (like a professional model she seemed to always know what her public wanted), so Kenju's pain at this time must be immense. We pray for her, all Storm's human friends and for Storm herself as she enters into the peaceable kingdom.

Please post your condolences on Kenju's blog.

Please pray!

My employer just canceled my health and pharmacy coverage. I don’t know what I’m going to do.

Yes, they can do this. Corporate policy is that only full-time employees (defined as working 30+ hours per week) get healthcare benefits. We’ve been waiting for my disability appeal for months now, and I have yet to be able to get up to 30 hours per week. My doctor currently has me at 24, and I’m not even capable of that. It sucks, but they can do it.

Posted by Liz at FINDING LIFE HARD?:

Our Easter weekend plans - such as they were but mainly relaxing - changed suddenly yesterday morning when we had a phone call from Sister-in-law in Derby saying Mother-in-law was back in hospital - she only came out on Wednesday.

She's supposed to be on a high dose of oxygen 24 hours a day and she'd turned the machine off and then panicked when she couldn't breathe. The hospital had pumped her with oxygen and, as there was nothing else to do, sent her home.

From it's margaret at Facebook:

Poor Joel is back in the hospital again. He went in for a 9am appt (regular doctor appt kinda thang) They called at 2 saying he was being admitted through the ER.
Update from Margaret:

Joel is on the cardiac ward. They think he was having a heart attack!!! Well, at least he did it at the hospital. He is stable and comfortable and, well, pissed. I'll put money on it that they run one of those scopes up to his heart to see if he has any blockage that a stint will fix. The alternative theory is that the meds he is on for the MG are taking their toll.... poor guy. But he is in good spirits. Keep those prayers a-comin'!

From AFP:

Soaring global food prices threaten to push tens of millions of Asians into extreme poverty and cut the region's economic growth this year, the Asian Development Bank warned in a report on Tuesday. Coupled with skyrocketing oil prices, the spike poses a serious setback for developing Asia.

From BBC NEWS (Asia - Pacific):

Fighting has erupted between soldiers from Cambodia and Thailand along their disputed mountainous border for a fifth consecutive day. At least 12 soldiers have been killed.

From THE INDEPENDENT:

Bombs planted by the roadside tore through two Pakistani navy buses taking employees to work on Tuesday, killing four people and wounding more than 50 others. The blasts took place roughly 15 minutes apart in different areas of Karachi.

LADIES AND GENTLEMEN (AND OTHERS)
ELLIE FINLAY'S WORST EVER JOKE

A maiden was renowned throughout the kingdom for her beauty.

One day, the queen learned of her.

Being envious, she threw the maiden into the dungeon.

And the queen made her wear an ugly, ugly dress.

Every day, she saw knights riding past. She called for help, but they were repulsed by the dress.

Eventually, she realized no knight would rescue a damsel in this dress.

MADPRIEST'S THOUGHT FOR THE DAY

It's "I believe" not "I know."

DON'T BLAME MADPRIEST, BLAME JIM

Last year I replaced all the windows in my house with that expensive double-pane energy efficient kind, and today, I got a call from the contractor who installed them. He was complaining that the work had been completed a whole year ago and I still hadn't paid for them.

Hellloooo,............ just because I'm blonde doesn't mean that I am automatically stupid. So, I told him just what his fast talking sales guy had told me last year...that in ONE YEAR these windows would pay for themselves! Helllooooo? It's been a year! I told him.

There was only silence at the other end of the line, so I finally just hung up. He never called back. I bet he felt like an idiot.

CHURCH OF ENGLAND GETS IT (HALF) RIGHT

From THE TELEGRAPH:

Nick Clegg, the Deputy Prime Minister, began work towards repealing the 1701 Act of Settlement, under which heirs to the throne must renounce their claim on marrying a Roman Catholic, in order to introduce full equality between the faiths. However, the plan to abolish the Act of Settlement was quietly shelved after the Church raised significant objections centring on the British sovereign’s dual role as Supreme Governor.

Church leaders expressed concern that if a future heir to the throne married a Roman Catholic, their children would be required by canon law to be brought up in that faith. This would result in the constitutionally problematic situation whereby the Supreme Governor of the Church of England was a Roman Catholic, and so ultimately answerable to a separate sovereign leader, the Pope, and the Vatican. There is no similar prohibition on the Royal family marrying members of other faiths such as Islam and Judaism, or those who are openly agnostic or atheist.

COMMENT: Unless we remove the role of head of state from the monarchy then a Roman Catholic can never be allowed to be our monarch for the reasons the Church of England states and for the one other very important reason. Our head of state has to sign all acts of parliament before they actually become law. This is, at present, a symbolic act as convention (and the threat of the abolition of the monarchy) dictates that the monarch signs everything. But this is powerful symbolism for the British because it makes the point that politicians are subject to a non-politician. As our monarch is regarded as the person who represents all the citizens of Britain this means that politicians are subject to all of us. It's also, in theory, the last resort for stopping our government from becomming despotic. However, if the monarch was a Roman Catholic and our government passed a law stating that lesbians could have an abortion up to nine months of pregnancy, a Roman Catholic monarch could not sign that act without being excommunicated from their church. For the sake of that hypothetical Roman catholic monarch a Roman catholic should never be put into that position. For the sake of our monarchy, a Roman catholic cannot be allowed to be put into that position because if such a monarch was to refuse to sign such legislation because of her or his faith, then there would be a constitutional crisis that could only end in the abolition of the monarchy.

RENZ IN THE WOODS'
EASTER MESSAGE
FOR THE TROOPS

SUFFER THE LITTLE CHILDREN

MADPRIEST'S STRANGE, BUT WONDERFUL, MINISTRY

I am definitely resigned now to never working for the Church of England again. It's not that I don't want to but, after having 75 applications rejected, only a fool wouldn't come to the conclusion that it is they who don't want me. It hurts but I have to suck it up as my wife won't put up with me moping around feeling sorry for myself for much longer. Anyway, the Bishop of Newcastle has made it perfectly clear that the diocese will no longer allow me stay in my home for the last ten years without me paying for the privilege. So, it's time to move on.

I am slowly getting used to the idea of having a sort of priesthood on the internet through OCICBW... and St. Laika's. To begin with I had problems equating blogging with work but I don't any longer. I can honestly say that I put in far more hours preparing everything for Holy Week, especially at St. Laika's, than I ever did when I was parish based (and I was no slouch then). Fortunately it has been very much worth it. For example, seven hundred people listened to the Tenebrae service between Holy Saturday evening and Easter morning (and that was just via my blog - I don't know how many people downloaded the podcast via iTunes).

But there are some cold, hard facts to address now. If I am to continue this work and mission, this fresh expression of church, I need the financial backing of people who believe it to be worthwhile. Thirty five readers of OCICBW... already do so and very generously but collectively the donations only add up to £500 per month which is not enough if I am not living in church accommodation. Just the running of my various websites, the cost of my servers who host my audio files and the paying of royalties for the music played at St. Laika's, comes to well in excess of a hundred pounds every month.

So, I need help, and you are the only people I can ask for help. If you can afford to do so, if you do not do so already and if you feel so inclined please consider sponsoring my ministry on a regular basis or, if you would rather not commit to that, make a one of off donation to help pay for this Lent and Easter's podcasts.

Details of how to donate can be found on the right hand sidebar of this blog under the heading, "MadPriest is appealing."

Regard it as your contribution towards the mission of the Church, if you want. This would not be a lie as St. Laika's is reaching out beyond the walls of the Church into peoples' homes and it's success, even at this early stage of its existence, demonstrates that there is a need for such a ministry.

May God bless you all this Eastertide and may God bless MadPriest. Let's bring on the Kingdom together!

EASTER AT ST. LAIKA'S
