THE MIDNIGHT JUKEBOX
CLASSY FRIDAY

MAD DAD'S JOKE OF THE DAY
The government today announced that it is changing its symbol for Parliament from a portcullis to a condom, because it more accurately reflects the government's political stance.
A condom allows for inflation, halts production, destroys the next generation, protects a bunch of dicks, and gives you a sense of security while you're actually being screwed!
Damn, it just doesn't get more accurate than that!

From THE SUN:
A woman with fake boobs was in agony when one implant exploded after she was shot in the chest with a paintball. The 26-year-old's soft gel implant ruptured under her skin when the ball hit her breast at 190mph.
A spokesman for UKPaintball said: "We want to ensure nothing like this happens ever again. We're now providing additional padding around the chest region to any surgically enhanced female participants. They just need to contact their local venue, tell them they have fake breasts, let them know their bra size and then the centre will take care of the rest."

It was Bailey's sixteenth birthday yesterday. His companion, Jay Simser, writes: He is my best friend and I love him. He has been with me for 16 years and I know he is approaching the end times. Hopefully I will wake to find him gone to sleep sometime with no suffering. In the meantime I shall enjoy him as long as he wants to be here.

Quezada, the son of Guatemalan immigrants, moved to the Mission with his family in 1971 after their San Fernando Valley home was destroyed in an earthquake. In the ’90s he emerged as the center of many social justice movements throughout the city, especially those involving affordable housing, land-use issues and immigrant rights.
He was a founding member of the Mission Anti-Displacement Coalition, and at the time of his death was the executive director of Dolores Street Community Services.

THE MIDNIGHT JUKEBOX
Among The Oak And Ash is an ever evolving and changing collection of musicians led by American singer songwriter Josh Joplin who play songs based on and inspired by the traditional folk music of Appalachia.
Joplin first became enthralled with Appalachian music when he was introduced to Cari Norris, the granddaughter of the late Lily May Ledford, an original Coon Creek Girl (the first all-women string band in radio).
“I was like a wide-eyed anthropologist explaining my important new discovery of a lost culture to an audience of its descendants.”
For Josh, it’s that elemental connection to traditional music and its humanity he returns to when he needs to be reminded “that there is something bigger in this world that threads us all to one another.”

MAKING WAR, NOT LOVE:
A FRENCH VIEW ON SEX IN AMERICA
A few years ago, we were on a family beach vacation in Florida. After a swim, my two-year-old daughter took off her bathing suit. Suddenly, the summer visitors began looking at us sideways. A few minutes later, a sheriff’s deputy equipped with an arsenal that could destroy an entire city, arrived and shouted at us that we had to get our daughter dressed again if we didn’t want to get fined. My daughter, who thought it was a game, started to run. We ran after her…and the sheriff ran after us. Finally, we caught her and laughed out loud, but the big man in uniform didn’t. In Uncle Sam territory, to be naked on the beach is forbidden, even for babies.
North America, obviously, has a problem with sex that comes from its Protestant legacy, which also has it giving the whole world lessons in morality. To describe America as a Puritan country is not enough because it is a double-faced Puritanism, which shifts with change in attitudes, uses the vocabulary of freedom and coexists with a thriving porn industry. More precisely, this is a prurient Puritanism.
What was the real point of the Dominique Strauss-Kahn and Clinton cases? They were a perfect vehicle to condemn eroticism in order to be able to talk more about sex. For weeks, even months, American people licked their lips over every intimate detail: about felatio, sperm, genital organs -- always with a false indignation. The fact that the alleged victim’s lawyer Kenneth Thompson talked about the “assaulted” vagina of his client Nafissatou Diallo with obscene jubilation is a telltale sign of this phenomenon.

MEXICAN CYCLISTS FLATTENED
BY ANALYST'S SUGGESTION
From FOX NEWS LATINO:
Mexico City motorists should take it upon themselves to rid the capital of cyclists by "flattening" those that get in their way, economic analyst Angel Verdugo, commentator for the Mexican radio program Reporte 98.5, said.
These cyclists, especially those participating in the Ecobici bike-sharing program, which was launched last year, are "a plague," Verdugo said.
"They think of themselves as "Europeans; they think they're French ... and that they're in Paris" but they forget they're Mexicans with all that that implies," Verdugo said.
The commentator urged motorists to respond by "launching their vehicle immediately and not giving them any chance, to see if they'll understand."
"This new plague is going to cause major damage in the Federal District and, therefore, I ask you, please, throw your vehicle at them and flatten them. Cyclists are savages and the rule of 'spare the rod spoil the child' must be applied," Verdugo said.
Mexico City's government, which has sponsored programs aimed at increasing bicycle use for the past four years, immediately fired back at Verdugo and termed his remarks "backward."
COMMENT: Well, you know, I think they're both right. Verdugo is right in encouraging motorists to run down cyclists and Mexico City Government is right in reminding drivers that after they have run down a cyclist they should reverse "backwards" to make sure the cyclist is well and truly flattened. You have to watch these cyclists, they're tough little buggers and will quite often just get up and cycle away after just the one running over.

Carmel Convent School student Pranvika Bedi had shown how a cow's burp could be helpful in generating fuel and electricity. "With the help of mask this burp is stored, filtered and liquefied and then used as fuel to generate electricity. I will improvise mask for national exhibition," said Priyanka.

SAME OLD EXCUSES
From FOX NEWS (sorry):
An Arizona man is facing a felony count of sexual abuse after forcing his maid to inappropriately touch him and then blaming Satan for his actions. After his arrest Tuesday, the man told police that he never grabbed the victim, and said she was angry because he was going to fire her. He stated that she tried to swing at him, but hit him in the groin and that he grabbed her hand as it was on his penis.
Later in the police interview, the suspect added that he may have kept her hand on his penis longer than necessary.
COMMENT: Ah, yes, the age old question, "How long is too long for a man to hold a woman's hand to his penis?"
Send him down!!!
From THE ZIMDIASPORA:
A controversial South African pastors (sic) now runs a church for sexual activities in which he woodwink (sic) female worshippers into bed under false pretence of cleansing their sins. The church pastor is sexually serving young and desperate women who visit his congregation with the home (sic) of rebuilding their shattered lives.
An unsuspecting troubled woman found her self in the pastor’s bed, then discovered that there were many other girls of her age also being sexually serviced by the daring “prophet” He is married and does this behind his wife’s back. Now the extra-marital affair has backfired and is the subject of a police matter after she laid charges of intimidation and crimen (sic) injury against her. And she is singing like a canary about their furtive dalliance. She alleges the pastor is a brittle-boned sissy who is being beaten up by his wife. And though he is well-endowed, he is not a marathon runner but a sprinter in bed.
“Three minutes for him is too much when we have sex.”
Other details are too graphic for publication.
The name of the pastor's church is The Incredible Happenings Church.

From THE HOT BUTTON:
The Hells Angels are suing Hollywood fashion house Wildfox for using their name on a T-shirt, the Los Angeles Times reports. The offending item is emblazoned with the words “My boyfriend’s a Hells Angel” and features a pair of angel wings on the back. Both infringe upon the Hells Angels’ trademark name and logo, according to the motorcycle club’s attorney, Fritz Clapp.
“We bring these lawsuits from time to time not just to punish but to educate,” he told the Los Angeles Times. “Somebody thought erroneously that Hells Angels is a generic term.”
The U.S. Department of Justice describes the Hells Angels as an OMG (outlaw motorcycle gang) of roughly 800 members that “pose a criminal threat on six continents.”
Both Jesus Christ, son of the living God, and the ghost of Che Guevara are rumoured to be taking a serious interest in this case. If the motorcycle gang is successful and win the case, a whole load of evangelicals and reds will probably find themselves up before the judge.

BREWER BROTHERS WERE WRONG ALL ALONG
Those of you who have been hanging around The Neighbourhood for a few years will remember the Great SPCK Scandal in which American businessmen, Phil and Mark Brewer, bought up the respected, British Christian bookshop, chain, SPCK, and managed to run it into the ground within months of taking it over. Their actions resulted in a lot of pain and suffering for the shops' former employees and even led to the suicide of one, popular bookshop manager. Condemnation of their unchristian actions resulted in the brother's sending cease and desist notices to perfectly decent people like blogging cartoonist par excellence, Dave Walker (who is a sweet guy who never did not deserve bullying in such an aggressive manner). Mark Brewe even went through a phase of bombarding OCICBW... with threats (yeah, like that stopped me calling these obviously dodgy hatchet-job asset strippers to account).
Therefore, it was with satisfaction and a sense of justification (albeit one tinged with sadness at all that was lost, especially that poor man's life) that I read the following news report today. This may well be the final page of the tragic saga in which two men managed to destroy a British institution and many lives along with it and also brought scandal on the Orthodox Church in my country and abroad.
From THE NORTHERN ECHO:
Six Durham Cathedral bookshop workers have been awarded a total payout of nearly £28,000 after successfully suing its former owners for unfair dismissal. An employment tribunal held in Newcastle yesterday found the six, with 90 years’ service between them, were unfairly dismissed by American brothers Phil and Mark Brewer when they suddenly, and unexpectedly, closed the shop, in January last year.
Joan Cummins, one of the six, said: “I’m so delighted. It was never about the money. We’ve got our justice.”
Having taken over the bookshop, once described as the best in the world, in 2006, the Brewers were accused of running it into the ground.
Mrs Cummins said: “It was an absolute disgrace. We had no stock whatsoever. We were ashamed of it.”
The cathedral reopened the shop on March 1 and continues to run it. All six staff still work there.
After yesterday’s hearing, Mrs Cummins, 61, said: “We hope we never see the Brewers or their like in the cathedral ever again.”
Saint Cuthbert, (an Orthodox saint), whose bones lie in the cathedral, was not available for comment. But reliable sources inform me that he was skipping around heaven yesterday with a huge, satisfied grin on his face.
Sam Norton and all the other bloggers involved in not letting the Brewer Brothers get away with it, should give themselves a hearty slap on the back. The bad guys may not have been completely defeated, they rarely are, but they were seriously wounded this time, thanks to you lot.

THE ARROGANCE OF SCHISMATICS
The Ontario Superior Court Justice, T.D. Little, has ruled that the church and a financial trust belonging to the parish of St. Aidan's in Windsor must remain with the Anglican diocese of Huron. The Anglican Church of Canada will take back their property and a healing mass to be conducted by Rev. Robert Bennett, the bishop of Huron, will take place at St. Aidan's on Sunday, 28th. August.
One of the cult's leaders gave their reasons for setting up a new religion:
"The diocese started to drift away from what we believed and we were not prepared to go with them. We are just disappointed in the result."
You know, I often disagree with the policies of the Church of England but I've never once claimed that the Church of England disagrees with me. That would be arrogance on a monumental scale that even my blogger's ego could not manage.

My mother is 96 and dying. It's not going to be easy for her to die because she's healthy and tough. Too mean to die, that's my Mom. She's in California, I'm in Iowa. In a different story, I would fly out to see her before she dies and we would all have "closure" and no regrets. But that is not going to be our story. See, my mother never wanted me or any of her kids for that matter. She was a negative, critical, unhappy person. A little less than 20 years ago she kicked me out. "I can't stand you. Get out of my house" And I never went back. However, she will no die alone.

From CHRISTIAN TODAY:
Priests in Harare (Zimbabwe) are being ordered out of church property by excommunicated bishop, Dr Nolbert Kunonga; (Kunonga, a close ally of Robert Mugabe, was excommunicated in 2007 and has since waged a campaign of intimidation against the Anglican Church in Zimbabwe). His supporters have already forced the Rev Dzikamai Mudenda, his wife and their extended family, to leave St James Mabvuku in Harare.
It comes just weeks after the high court (under Mugabe's control) ruled that Dr Kunonga had interim custody of all church properties, despite these belonging to the Church of the Province of Central Africa. Stamped copies of the high court judgement have been sent to priests living in parish rectories across the Diocese of Harare. In one case, police accompanied Dr Kunonga's supporters as they delivered the letter.

PROVOST ATTACKED BY EAGLE
BUT WAS IT HIS OWN STUPID FAULT?
From THE TELEGRAPH:
The Very Rev Hunter Farquharson, Provost of St Ninian’s (Episcopal) Cathedral in Perth, who breeds and shows birds as a hobby, returned to his cottage to find his prize-winning goose Beatrice dead, and a white-tailed sea eagle perched on a fence post nearby.
He went inside to phone the RSPB, a partner in the eagle reintroduction project, but then heard a "terrible noise" as the eagle chased his champion gander Bertie. When he tried to intervene the raptor jumped on his back, tearing his shirt, leaving a 4in wound below his shoulder and cutting his head.
It was the second time Mr Farquharson's birds had been attacked by young sea eagles. Two years ago four of his bantams were killed. He now believes they should not be reintroduced to Scotland, particularly in a populated part of the country.
"I have nothing against sea eagles at all. They are magnificent birds but around here there are far too many people and domestic animals.
A spokesman for RSPB Scotland said, "It is worth noting that when this first happened with Mr Farquharson in 2008 we visited his property and afterwards paid for the installation of heavy nylon netting affixed to fence posts driven into the ground so that the poultry pen and all Mr Farquharson's birds were safe from predation. When we visited again on Friday it was apparent that, for whatever reason, these measures were no longer present."
COMMENT: You know, I have absolutely nothing against people with silly surnames as long as they stay away from people with proper, decent surnames.

WETTING THE BABY'S HEAD
From THE NEW YORK DAILY NEWS:
A California priest has been suspended for showing up at a baptism so drunk he could barely walk. He shocked and outraged parishioners at All Hallow (R.C.)Church in Sacramento by turning up nearly an hour late for his service on Saturday. He slurred his words, had trouble walking and fell over.
He had to be carried out of the sanctuary while another priest took over the baptisms.
COMMENT: Well, it makes a change for the priest at a christening to be drunk rather than the candidate's family.

SWEDEN DRIFTS SOUTH
From THE LOCAL (Sweden):
Burger giant McDonald’s chose to fake the Swedish countryside in their latest commercial, in which the company highlights Swedish agriculture, and their own cooperation with Swedish farmers.
It now turns out that the commercial was actually filmed in the Czech Republic, as the Swedish landscape "didn’t work."
In a separate, but equally stunning, revelation it has, at last, been made public that, far from being typical Swedes, the pop group, ABBA, were, in fact, from a small village called Ping located in the Chinese province of Inner Mongolia.
"We always wanted to perform in the Eurovision Song Contest," explained the group's spokesman, Bjorn Borg. "So we lied about our nationality. When we won we couldn't reveal where we were really from as they would have disqualified us. So we pretended to be Scandinavian for the rest of our musical careers. It was okay except for the open sandwiches we were forced to eat which are nowhere near as tasty as a fresh pony burger. We did miss them."
The president of the European Union, Mr. Terry Wogan, has expressed personal shock and grief on hearing the news.
"If you can't trust a Swede who the hell can you trust?" he asked members of the European Parliament sitting in Strasbourg.
Sweden has been banned from taking part in the European Song Contest for the next three years and the BBC has withdrawn the programme, "Wallender" from its schedules as a protest against the deception.
In yet another bomb shell expose it has been revealed that the founder of IKEA was a Nazi who believed that "Hitler was the saviour of Europe." And this is actually true.

WHOSE WORLD IS IT ANYWAY?
From THE LOCAL (Sweden):
A recent government decision to temporarily halt Sweden's licensed wolf hunt is nothing more than an attempt to fool the EU commission, environmental organisations claimed on Tuesday. The Swedish Society for Nature Conservation (Naturskyddsföreningen), World Wildlife Fund and the Predatory Animal Association (Svenska rovdjursföreningen) have decided to send the EU commission a joint statement on the matter.
“We feel that it’s highly important that we inform the EU commission that the government is trying to trick the commission. They’re pretending to halt the hunt but then continuing it again, despite the fact that the wolf population isn’t viable,” said Mikael Karlsson, chairman of the Swedish Society for Nature Conservation , to Sveriges Radio.
Several experts have argued that the wolf population in the Nordic countries needs to grow to at least three times its current size to remain viable.
Following pressure from the EU commission, the Swedish government agreed to stop the licensed wolf hunt this winter. However, they hope to resume this hunt as soon as the winter 2012-2013.
Minister for the environment Andreas Carlgren stated, “Sweden’s policy on predators must be carried out with great consideration and respect for those that take the consequences of living near predators, that is the local population.”
COMMENT: I do not believe that the Christian religion is responsible for all the violence in the world. In fact, I believe Christian moral teaching acts as a brake against violence in many situations and helps initiate reconciliation after periods of violence. However, the arrogance of some Christian theology is responsible for causing much pain in the world. For example, the Church's continued insistence on the legal oppression of more than half the population of the world based only on the accident of their gender is probably the main reason for the Christian faith's accelerating demise. Another negative cornerstone of Christian belief, one which has resulted in, maybe irreversible, damage to our planet, is the claim in Judaic mythology, adhered to by Christians, that humans have been given dominion over all nature. Theologians can argue, and have argued often, about how the word "dominion" should be interpreted but human nature, being biased towards self interest, has meant that the theology of dominion has been mainly used as an excuse for Christians (and non-Christians whose morality is based on the Christian tradition) to do whatever they like in the natural world and damn the consequences. This is very much a Judeo-Christian mindset. The religions of Asia tend to emphasise that humans are part of nature and not above it.
It is this theology of human dominion over nature that informs Sweden's minister for the environment when he states that his country's "policy on predators must be carried out with great consideration and respect for those that take the consequences of living near predators..."
Within this statement is the assumption that human interest is "naturally" more important than the interests of any other creature and even the ecosystem itself. But, for a modern, scientifically informed, philosophically attuned, Christian is this a defendable moral assumption to make? Personally, I do not thinks so, even though I can see how a universal adoption of such a view would lead to almost definite problems for myself and the rest of humanity.
The ethicist, Peter Singer, among others, has argued for the acceptance of the innate personhood of all sentient creatures (with sentiency being defined to include self awareness at all levels of consciousness) and I am intellectually convinced by his reasoning even though my practice does not reflect my beliefs on this matter as consistently as Singer's vegetarian lifestyle does.
As "enlightened" Christians we strongly believe that no human being should be treated as an object by other human beings. Therefore, unless we believe that God created every non-human, sentient animal to be nothing more than objects, we would be hypocritical in demanding the non-objectification of humans whilst allowing the continued objectification of other creatures.
So, in respect of the specific example in question, the wolves of Sweden, how far can humans go in effecting their population, opportunity and standard of life of the wolves simply in order to protect human interests?
I would suggest that, logically, if we confer personhood on the wolves then we can interfere in their existence no more than we can interfere with the lives of our fellow humans. In fact, as wolves are from a different social group to ourselves, in no way beholden to obey our group's rules, and do not have the ability to understand human moral values, we should be biased to their needs in preference to our own. Personally I believe we have the right to defend ourselves when attacked and to defend our property if we are present at an attack on that property. It would be unreasonable to expect a farmer to stand and watch his livestock being ripped to pieces in front of him. But killing wolves because they might attack domestic livestock is an attack on their personhood and should be as unacceptable as killing Muslim babies because a very few Muslim babies grow up to become suicide bombers.
Wolves learn from communal experience and will normally stay away from situations that they understand to be dangerous to themselves. But, if forced by their survival instinct into no other choice they will overcome their fear and they will attack and kill livestock "belonging" to human beings. Unless we all turned into vegetarians there is no practical way to stop this happening that respects the interests of wolves. But, just as wolves are pack animals so are humans and we should take care of all the members of our pack. So losses incurred by farmers caused by our pack respecting the right to life of the wolf pack should be born by the whole of our society and not the individual farmers. If society wishes to reduce the amount of compensation paid out then it should invest in physical, non-harmful, deterrents rather than bullets rather than leaving such preventative measures, and their cost, to individual farmers.
Our God is far, far superior in all faculties to human beings than human beings are to wolves. We should be careful when we deny moral rights to animals based on their perceived status of being "less" than us just in case God decides to view us "insignificant, little ants" in exactly the same way.

I GOT A BASKETBALL JONES
I have very little interest in basketball. In fact, the only games I have ever watched were on the Harlem Globetrotters' cartoon series. So, it's a bit strange that one of my main heroes in life is the Chicago Bulls player, Luol Deng, a man who I have never seen doing what he is famous for doing, namely playing basketball.
There is no doubt this man's athletic prowess is impressive but it is not that impresses me most about him. The real slam dunk, as far as I am concerned, is the way he says "Thank you."
Born in South Sudan he had to flee from the civil war in his country with his family as his father was a parliamentarian. They ended up in Egypt and were eventually granted political asylum in Britain where they were housed, as is so often the case, in Brixton (not the safest and most pleasant part of London to say the least, although it does have a multiethnic buzz that can be exciting). At the age of fourteen, due to his burgeoning basketball talents, Luol moved to the States to play the game at the Blair Academy in New Jersey. He is now, at the age of twenty six, one of the highest paid basketball players in the world.
All that, in itself, would make the young man a role model for triumphing over adversity, but it's what Luol has done with his fame and fortune, and the humble way he has gone about it, that blows my socks off.
From WIKIPEDIA: Deng is involved in numerous charities, such as the UK children's charity School Home Support. He has been noted for his work on behalf of the Lost Boys of Sudan and other refugees. During the summers of 2006 and 2007, Luol went to Africa, Asia and Europe with the NBA for their Basketball Without Borders Tour. He is also a spokesperson for the World Food Programme.
"He really does epitomize everything I had hoped for as a person and a basketball player," general manager John Paxson said. "I think it's one of the reasons we've gotten to the level we're at this year. I'm truly proud of him. I think the world of him as a person and as a player."
Following the 2009–2010 season, Deng made a highly publicised first return to his native Sudan.
All of this is brilliant, but there is one thing above all else that has given him hero status in my book. Although he didn't live for long in England, he has spent millions of dollars on UK charities, to say thank you for our giving his family refuge. He also became a naturalised, British citizen back in 2006 and will be leading our basketball team during the next Olympic Games.
You know, we don't deserve such an honour as we treat refugees like shit most of the time in my country. So Luol's actions fill me both with pride and embarrassment at the same time.
Here's a clip of Luol talking on the BBC yesterday evening:
Whenever, I hear about this man and what he has done with his life and the way he has made the lives of countless other people much, much better, tears well up in my eyes. I am not joking, they do. I think this is because that although we talk to the cows come home about the Kingdom of God being both in the future and here on earth now, to be honest, you rarely come across the reality of this great claim. For me, Luol Deng drags the Kingdom of God around behind him wherever he goes and in doing so, gives us all a glimpse of how life should be lived. Good on him!
And here's a tip for you. Ring your bookie and put a small bet on Great Britain winning the Basketball gold at the Olympics. The odds you will get will be phenomenally high, especially if you live in the United States. But you never know, it might just happen. Sometimes, very occasionally, life is like the movies and it's people like Luol who can make it happen.
Here's a great vid from 1975 that I have always adored. This basketball story is as good an excuse as any to post it.
And finally, the photoshop:

PEEPS OF THE DAY
Here are two of my bestest internet friends together in one place at the same time. They are the incredibly wicked Ellie and longstanding lurker in chief, Susan Urbach (singer, bomb survivor and all-round good egg). The photograph was taken at St. Paul's Cathedral in OKC where Ellie was conducting a workshop (probably entitled, "There were two nuns sitting on a park bench - Risqué jokes throughout the ages").
THE PRAYER LIST: 23RD. AUGUST 2011
The Prayer List is a daily feature at OCICBW... with an option to light a candle as you pray. If anybody has any concerns they would like included on tomorrow's list please email me with details or leave your request in the comments to this post. I will include relevant photos if provided.
FOR YOUR PRAYERS
From It's Margaret:
Well, I did lose my job, and now we are putting our house on the market, selling our books and some other stuff that will be too expensive to move --and striving to go with the flow and trusting that what comes next will be what we are 'supposed' to be doing!
For more details about our friend's predicament, check out
LEAVE IT WHERE JESUS FLANG IT.
In a similar vein, my Facebook friend, Reverend John, is "in need of a new place to serve as an Episcopal priest" and to be "kept in our prayers."
And don't forget Padre Mickey and everyone else who has given up everything to serve the people of God and who are now facing pain and hardship because of the secular mindsets of parish councils, bishops and search committees who all seem to be looking for God Almighty to tell them what nice people they all are every Sunday morning.

A 19-year old teen, Marcellus Andrews, was kicked and beaten to death early Friday morning in Waterloo, Iowa, as anti-gay slurs were hurled by as yet unknown assailants. The teen was taken off life support Saturday after spending the night in the hospital. Andrews had been waiting at a friend’s house when a group drove up in a truck and hurled anti-gay slurs at the teen. No one knows why the mob attacked Andrews, but it is apparent they new him as they knew his name.

THE MIDNIGHT JUKEBOX
Here are three songs from the beautiful, Irish folksinger, Cara Dillon's eponymous, debut album. Although I still love her work, I actually prefer this 2001 album to her later recordings simply because it is less polished. Roots music and rock and roll can be rendered bland and soulless by expensive production, especially this side of the Atlantic where we've never really got the knack of making music sound exciting in the studio like American engineers seem to manage as a matter of course. Mind you, I find Cara's pure, unadorned vocal delivery more similar to female, American, bluegrass singers than the "I'm Irish, I am. Where are the tourists?" style adopted by most Emerald Isle singers, especially south of the border.

AS THEY ARE HAVING A BAD DAY
HERE'S A BAD JOKE TO
CHEER UP THE CANADIANS
After having dug to a depth of 10 feet last year, British scientists found traces of copper wire dating back 200 years and came to the conclusion that their ancestors already had a telephone network more than 150 years ago.
Not to be outdone by the Brits, in the weeks that followed, an American archaeologist dug to a depth of 20 feet, and shortly after, a story published in the New York Times: "American archaeologists, finding traces of 250-year-old copper wire, have concluded that their ancestors already had an advanced high-tech communications network 50 years earlier than the British".
One week later, Canadian Dept. of Mines and Resources in Northern Canada reported the following:
"After digging as deep as 30 feet in Northern Canada in the Ontario region of Thunder Bay
Jack Lucknow, a self-taught archaeologist, reported that he found absolutely nothing.
"Jack has therefore concluded that 250 years ago, Canada had already gone wireless."
And you all can thank John E. for that one.

CAT OF THE DAY
Counterlight's Willy was ten years old on Sunday.
Before you start trying to work out how that is possible for such a mature gentleman, here is a photograph of our friend's Willy.
I have significantly cleaned up and enhanced the original photograph as Doug, the Neighbourhood's greatest, living artist, couldn't be arsed to himself and his Willy deserves such care and attention.
100 days off purgatory for the first person to work the phrase, "stroking Counterlight's Willy" into their comment in a non-gratuitous way.

DON'T BLAME MADPRIEST, BLAME JANIS
I found this on Facebook and thought of you lot.
A guy fell asleep on the beach and got a horrible sunburn, specifically to his thighs. He went to the hospital and was admitted with second-degree burns. His skin was starting to blister and he was in severe pain so the doctor prescribed continuous saline, electrolytes, a sedative, and a Viagra pill every four hours.
The nurse, who was astounded, asked, 'What good will Viagra do for him'
The doctor replied, 'It won't do anything for his condition, but it'll keep the sheets off his legs.
Oh, dear. It shouldn't be, but that is a really good joke.

THE PRAYER LIST: 22ND. AUGUST 2011
There are some days when I wake up in the morning and the only way I can cope with the absolute hopelessness of my life is by sitting down, closing my eyes and forcing myself into a near catatonic unconsciousness. Today has been one of those days. Tomorrow my life will be just as futile but, with a bit of luck, overnight my mind will have tricked itself back into believing that I can cope with it.

Prayers please for my Facebook friend, Marguerite, whose father, Peter, "passed away very peacefully" at the weekend.

The funeral service for my father-in-law went as well as could be expected. The church where it was held was very gracious. It was well attended.
And then I got in my car and drove. And drove. And drove. And drove. And drove. And ten hours later I pulled into the driveway.

Please pray for our friend, Red, over at APPLES OF GOLD. She's been unusually tired recently and may have chronic fatigue syndrome. She has been referred to a specialist clinic and hopefully she is now on the road to being able to manage her condition.

David, the vernacular something or other, is pretty much moved into his new home and, no doubt, looking forward to his new job (which should have been mine!!!). On HIS BLOG he says that, "Stress levels have been high. The first few days have been characterised by skin-stripping arguments, invective, bile and a sense that we may have lost a sense of 'normal' forever."
However, "Gladly, that sense is fast abating as routines re-build, old habits of play resume and the kids remove their self-applied red horns. If us adults have found it all a bit much, we must remember that the Twins Aculae must have had it all the worse. Peace begins to reign over the (now) sunny idyll that is Whitton."
Don't worry, David. All will be well and you will be a very successful vicar.

Margaretkiaora, who blogs at FILEYGARDINER and elsewhere, is suffering from a bout of insomnia made worse by her being attacked viciously the other day by a swarm of hungry, Yorkshire mosquitoes. She is stoical about all this but we pray that she will be back to full, nightly restfulness very quickly.
