THE MIDNIGHT JUKEBOX
CLASSY FRIDAY

Like an archival Sun session or a long lost Owen Bradley date, Sea of Tears spooks out at you—a rustic ghost swaggering blurring the line between immediacy and our collective bygone. Jerry Miller's foreboding, ringing guitars usher in and accompany Jewell as she sings seductively, laconically, "Someday my life will be over and no one will remember my name." Well, that may or may not be true come Judgment Day, but Jewell's name is becoming very familiar right now and will deservedly continue to do so as Sea of Tears permeates itself into the musical consciousness.

On its surface, Eilen Jewell's second national release (and third overall) follows a natural growth as a fiercely original artist gives props to her early rock 'n roll influences. But all of the songs insinuate themselves into the bloodstream, slowing the pulse, giving the sound of the heart more reverb, and lending it more credence than the noisy machinations of the mind.

This is an ensemble locked in and sparse, making each groove its own while creating a haunted, inseparable whole. Jewell's delicate yet emotionally visceral songs steer ,Sea of Tears through a classic Patsy Cline journey of the heart: its broken moments and triumphs; its dark barrooms and darkening bedrooms…its eternal, resilient morning after.

LOUD FRIDAY

Young, angry and inspired by the New York Hardcore scene Midlands trio 'Nothing On Earth' had a few things to get off their chest with this release. Originally recorded in 2003 Nothing On Earth Can Stop Me is a revisit of an original recording that was scrapped when the band felt that the 'studio' just didn't get what they were trying to achieve. Nothing On Earth went home and in the original manner of punk and hardcore, re-recorded it themselves - DIY. Expect fierce riffs and breathless vocals delivered in a way that proves when you're nineteen, full of anger, hate and not sure why? - Nothing On Earth Can Stop You. (THE GENEPOOL)

THANKSGIVING

I think Gracie (my dog) is going to be OK. She's really sore, but she's up and walking around now, which is much better than she was a few days ago when it happened. We managed to get current enough that foreclosure has been stayed off for now, and we're working with our lender to keep the house because they don't want to have to try to sell it either. I've called the VA, and while there really isn't anything they can do for my back, they are going to get me in to see a mental health provider soon and I am having lunch with my priest today to try to bury the hatchet.

Suicide is something that stays in the back of my mind, but it's not something I think I could go through with yet. As things keep piling up, I feel more and more inadequate. Having that option, one that could provide for the well being of my family when I can't seem to do it, is so tempting though. I mean, a father is supposed to provide for his family, right? But knowing that there are people out there that care does help."

Thank you all again. You really did save my life.

Anyways, as I am wont to say, things are better on this side of the Mississippi. I’m not sure what I wish to say about it, but suffice it to say that a claim was placed against our property, and disproving it required a lot of disparate documents, that we were afraid might be long gone.

Well, they weren’t, and so far we have disproven most of the claim. We are still waiting for a few things to arrive.

We have, however determined that our window of opportunity for moving this year is really closed. So we will wait until spring. We will continue to get things ready and hopefully next year all will go smoothly and with much less anxiety. I’ll be way ahead on the packing for sure!

Update from Dah·veed (posted at WOUNDED BIRD):

Thank you all for the remembering prayers. The procedure came out well. I had a fully occluded artery that was successfully reopened and had four stents inserted. The time for the procedure used the time I could be subjected to the radiation and dye, so I will be doing it again on the 15th for two partially blocked arteries. But now, a day later I am doing and feeling well. (My Emphasis)

So, bad news and not so bad news. I have today been diagnosed with colorectal cancer. Have not seen specialists yet, this is from biopsies after colonoscopy. Gut doctor think it is early stage and that surgical removal will handle it. Given the size of it (substantial colon blockage), I have my doubts. Next step, CAT scan and visit surgeon. Will keep you advised. those who pray, please do! Otherwise, kind thoughts appreciated.

We continue to pray for those of our friends in the States who are still recovering from the recent bad weather, fires and floods.

We’re recovering here from the floods, hitting it hard in order to get cleaned up before winter.

A commercial flower grower in the town of Deerfield took it hard, lost many acres of effort, and the top-soil as well.

Political machinations have put a marriage amendment on the ballot in North Carolina in May 2012. The scheming in this whole thing has been disgusting. The date of the election was chosen to match the Republican primary, thus facilitating the turnout of the most rabid right-wingers and depress the turnout of those in favor of equality.

THANKSGIVING

Today is the fiftieth wedding anniversary of Tom and June Butler. There's loads of photos of the happy couple and their tribe posted over at WOUNDED BIRD. Grandmère Mimi also gives a long account of why she thinks they have stayed together so long. Grandpère agrees with her 100% (which is, of course, the real reason they have stayed together so long).

I have a new part time job at Hendry Wines!

It's an amazing coincidence, actually. I went to a tasting and tour with a friend of mine who said, "When I retire, I want to work part time at a winery," and the woman giving the tour said, "Are you available now?" Two weeks later, and voila! I am doing data processing, taking orders, answering the phones, and generally trying to make myself useful and absorb information about wine in the process.

FOR YOUR PRAYERS

Posted by Arkansas Hillbilly at HILLBILLY MUSINGS:

My life is in the toilet. I lost a good paying job that I hated last year, burned through my retirement to survive until I got this new job which pays less, has no benefits and makes me feel like an idiot every time I walk through the door. My house is one late payment away from foreclosure, my one surviving dog got hit by a car this weekend, and I can't even afford to take her to the vet. I was in a car accident last week that was deemed my fault, and we just upped our deductible to $1000 to "save money". I am in constant pain, since the accident aggravated old back injuries I sustained in the service.

And what makes matters worse, the one thing that could fix the money situation is the one thing I don't want to do. I have a life insurance policy that would pay out enough to take care of all the bills, past and present, AND, it doesn't have a suicide clause (seems suicide is an occupational hazard for us veterans). I ask myself if I'm being selfish, because if I ended it all, it would solve so many things and life, as it were, does go on after someone dies.

So that's the state of where I am now. Nothing spiritual, nothing profound, just a lot of darkness that I can't seem to shake.

You have heard similar sentiments from me in the past. Although all your comments of support have not really helped in any practical way, for reasons I don't understand, they always help me get through the dark times and somehow I'm still alive. I'm not sure I would be without you people being there. So, please, pop over to Hillbilly Musings and just tell our longstanding and good friend that you are out there and that you are with him even though you can't wave a magic wand to sort out all his troubles. (If anyone can wave a magic wand and sort out his problems you better bloody well do it and then start waving it my way. I'll then give you a list of everybody else who could do with some practical help. It's a long list).

GLEEFUL CHRISTIANITY

From CHRISTIAN TODAY:

Actress Kristin Chenoweth has sparked controversy by speaking out about her support of the gay community in an interview with lesbian and gay publication The Advocate.

The LGBT publication asked her, "What would you ask people who cite Christianity as their justification for passing laws that discriminate against people?"

Kristin replied, "I would ask, 'What would Jesus do?' It sounds so cliché and Pollyanna-ish, but I have a feeling if he were on the earth today, he wouldn't be walking around saying, 'You’re going to hell' and 'You're wrong, you're wrong, you're wrong.' I think he'd be accepting and loving."

Kristin is not new to controversy over her conflicting beliefs. In 2005, she was fired from a "Woman in Faith" concert for her support of gay rights.

In response to critics she said, "I don't judge you for your opinions, so please don't judge me for mine. I read my Bible and I pray and all of that – I really do. But at the same time, I don't think being gay is a sin. Period."

COMMENT: Not only has Kristin got herself fast tracked to a definite Babelicious Bishop post but for proving, beyond doubt, that not all blonde Christians are lacking in the brain cell department she is also hereby declared OCICBW...'s

BRICK OF THE DAY

HURRICANE KATIA HITS MADPRIEST MANSION

It's a bit windy here today. This happened less than ten miles away from where I live.

Fortunately nobody was hurt although a driver was badly injured on a local road when a tree fell on his car. Bridges have been closed as well as public spaces where there is danger from falling trees.

Full story at THE BBC.

CASSIE MEETS HER MATCH

Regular readers of OCICBW... will remember Cassie's epic fight with the legendary, Japanese monster, Godzilla. A fight from which our feline heroine definitely came out well and truly on top.

Sadly, I have to report that today she came face to face with her arch-nemesis, the giant rough collie known as Miles the Merciless...

...and this time the battle did not go according to Cassie's plan.

Further news from the frontline and loads and loads and loads more candid shots can be found at BAILEY'S BUDDY.

PLEASE NOTE:
No cute little kitties were harmed in the making of this photo-story.

MADPRIEST - KINGMAKER

"Dr Rowan Williams is understood to have told friends he is ready to quit the highest office in the Church of England to pursue a life in academia." (The Telegraph)

Biblically, it's the role of the independent prophet to choose the next king. I think I fall into that category. So here is my choice for the next Archbishop of Canterbury.

I am certain that the present bishop of Moray, Ross and Caithness has all the attributes the OCICBW... crowd could possibly require of the future leader of the Anglican Communion.

PLEASE NOTE: I am not joking.

RULE BRITANNIA

The English are not a very patriotic people. We used to be, but look where that got us. The whole British Empire thing was very naughty and, well, the whole episode embarrasses us somewhat. So we've overcompensated to the point that any outward display of pride in England is regarded as definitely non-PC if not out and out racism. However, there are three occasions on which we are allowed to be as patriotic as we like - three o'clock on Christmas Day afternoon when the Queen (God bless Her Majesty) chats to us all for 15 minutes; anytime we beat the Germans at absolutely anything, from the World Cup to getting a decent spot by the swimming pool in Majorca and, of course, on the last night of the Proms. What makes me very proud to be English is that, with the exception of beating the Germans which is always a deadly serious matter, we always do patriotism with our English tongues firmly in our English cheeks.

Here is the high point of last night's last night of the Proms. I reckon that if someone did this to "The Star Spangled Banner" in the States they would be lynched on the spot.

WORSHIP AT ST. LAIKA'S

Here is the service of holy communion for Sunday, 12th. September, 2011 (on the anniversary of an act of terrorism). The readings set for today are beyond coincidence. I've tried to compile a service that includes the anniversary of 9/11 whilst also being the service for this Sunday in the Church Calendar.
