ENHORABUENA PANAMÁ

For stuffing Costa Rica, 2 - 0, in the footie yesterday.

THE GREATEST DOG IN THE WORLD

We had to take Glenna to the doggie hospital for an emergency appointment today as she is still very poorly. This time we paid for a full blood screening which they did on the spot. The good news is that her major organs seem fine, although her heart rate is higher than it should be. She hasn't got an auto-immune desease which is reassuring (we had a dog once who died from that and I wouldn't want to go through that again). But her white blood cell count is very low. The vet believes it is more likely that she has picked up a nasty virus rather than her illness being due to a bone marrow problem. She has to go back on Monday for a follow up blood test.

So far it has cost us over £250 which is more than half of what you lot kindly donate every month. This near Christmas such an unexpected expense is bad news. If anyone wishes to contribute towards Glenna's vet bill you can do so using the donation widget in the sidebar. It would be very much appreciated (by me and Mrs MP, if not by Glenna who is blissfully unaware of all monetary matters). You don't need your own PayPal account to be able to do so.

THE CLASSY FRIDAY MIDNIGHT JUKEBOX

Not much is known about Cold Specks other than that she's actually Al Spx, a 23-year-old who hails from Etobicoke in Canada and now lives in London. A few Google searches reveal she used to go under the pseudonyms Basket of Figs and the Hotel Ghost, and there are a few EPs knocking about in each name. But right now she's working on her debut album as Cold Specks with producer Rob Ellis (PJ Harvey, Anna Calvi), creating what she calls "doom soul". Holland is the first single to emerge from the sessions, a skeletal, dry-as-a-bone musical backing swollen by a voice loaded with soul but beautifully restrained. "We are many, we are many, we are dust," goes the final line as the music fades and Spx is left delivering her own brand of death-obsessed gospel.

ROD AND HIS STAFF ATTACK CHILDLESS COUPLES

From THE CHRISTIAN INSTITUTE:

Marriage is an honourable institution and Church of England clergy should do all they can to protect it from redefinition, the chairman of Reform has warned.

Writing in the Church of England newspaper (which, as I pointed out the other day is not a Church of England newspaper) he said same sex marriage “would undermine the stability of society. If the present Government can alter its definition, then how do we know it might not change again in the future? It becomes something that is malleable rather than being rock solid. If marriage becomes primarily about loving commitment, then, as important as this is, the significance of marriage as a union – a permanent bond – between two people who were made to be physically compatible, is eroded. This union is demonstrated when children are born – the single result of a union of two people of the opposite sex. This doesn’t happen for every marriage – but the fact that it is the best context for nurturing children demonstrates the essential goodness of heterosexual marriage. It is an attempt to redefine marriage so that the link with child-bearing and child-rearing is broken and so that any idea that marriage is a gift from God is demolished.”

COMMENT: So, once again, have I got this right. If a man and a woman cannot have children it doesn't effect the institution of marriage but if a man and a man, or a woman and a woman, can't have children together then it destroys the institution of marriage. I'm not sure how that works myself but Rock Solid Rod obviously thinks it makes sense.

Actually, this whole thing about marriage and having children being the natural way of things is poppycock. If having children was our natural inclination God wouldn't have had to make orgasm such a pleasant experience.

I don't want to put anyone off but George is sure to be a bit whiffy by now and sharing a church with him is not going to be pleasant.

LOUD FRIDAY

WE ARE NOT BANNING GAYS -
WE'RE JUST NOT LETTING THEM IN

This is first class episcopal double speak.

From THE BURNLEY CITIZEN:

The government is planning to give the green light to same-sex couples to take part in civil ceremonies in religious settings. But the Bishop of Burnley, the Rt Revd John Goddard, has said that the Church of England would not be conducting such ceremonies because ‘it is not part of the Church of England’s teaching pattern’.

He said: “This is not about banning gay people from church. It is simply contrary to the decision made by the Anglican community.

"Gay couples are not permitted to have civil ceremonies in the Church of England.

"We are not judging couples but what we are saying is that it is not part of Church of England teaching pattern.

"We will not be encouraging the confusion between the marriage ceremony, for a man and a woman, and a civil service, which is a marriage-like service for same sex couples.”

COMMENT: So have I got this straight? It's not about judging gay people it's about judging gay people. Now my brain hurts.

"I'M IN CHARGE!"

From ALL AFRICA:

Following the controversy that trailed the recent peaceful protest staged by the Anglican Church Abakaliki Diocese, Bishop of the church, Rt.Rev.Benson Onyibor, said the protest was not targeted against state as was wrongly misunderstood by the governor, rather against all satanic vices that have enveloped the country.

He accused the press of either being against the government, the Anglican Church in Ebonyi state or against both the institutions which he claimed was the demon the church was sweeping away. He reminded newsmen that the Anglican Church is led Episcopally and therefore advised them to seek audience with him when they do not understand clearly issues of controversy.

COMMENT: My guess is that Nigerian journalists would not be that stupid.

AT HEART HE'S A NEW ROMANTIC

In a little room in a little house in a little village in Little England it will for ever be the 1980s.

JUDAISM IS A BAD IDEA

There is a belief at the centre of the Judaic religion that has caused more bloodshed in the world than any other religious idea - exclusivity. The thought that God would choose a specific bloodline and regard the offspring of that bloodline to be God's chosen people, specially privileged, closer to God, favoured by God in their arguments with others and that God would insist on this bloodline remaining pure for all time is an abomination. God does choose specific groups of people and specific individuals through whom God works out his purpose. For a God who rarely interferes in person in the world this is the only logistically sensible course of action open to God. But these are provisional choices made for specific reasons and do not give special merit to the relatives of those chosen. They don't even give special merit to those dumped with task they have been chosen to attempt.

The Jewish belief that they were God's chosen people was intensively propagated by the priestly caste of Judaism in the seventh century BC for very good reasons. The Jewish homelands had been invaded by The Babylonians and a large chunk of their population of had been exiled to non-Jewish lands within the Babylonian empire. The belief that they were special and set apart must have helped considerably to keep the Jewish exiles united when assimilation into the general Babylonian population would have meant an end to their hopes of repatriation. All nations employ similar propaganda when under attack from a foreign power intent on wiping out their national identity. During the Second World War the British government deliberately instilled the notion of Britishness in the minds of its population. Because the Jewish people were never completely free of foreign overlords from the Babylonian exile onwards the doctrine of racial purity persisted in Judaism from then onwards. Jesus Christ was an exclusivist at least at the beginning of his ministry, most probably throughout its full length. It could easily be argued that the early Jewish Christians only began to contemplate a universal religion after they had been ejected from Judaism for heresy.

There has always been a theological strand in Judaism, which I will call soft Zionism, that claims special status for the Jews in God's eyes but which does not necessarily condemn everybody else in the world to damnation. Basically adherents to this view will state that they are just not interested in everybody else, that everybody else is God's concern not theirs, that the rest of the world's population can carry on believing whatever they like. It is the arrogance of this viewpoint that I believe is the main contributor to the bloodshed I mentioned at the beginning of this post. But I am not just talking about blood shed by Jews in the holocausts and pogroms of history or the bloodshed suffered in the Middle East following Jewish repatriation to "the Holy Land." I am even more so referring to the greater bloodshed that Christian nations have inflicted on non-Christian nations, each other, their own citizens and Jewish people, over the years because they have taken the dogma of being chosen by God and applied it to themselves and then gone on to believe that "everybody else" are not their concern and, therefore, not to be regarded as having the same worth.

Believing you are more special than everyone else is as harmful to yourself and others as believing that you are worthless compared to others. This is true for individuals, for nations and for entire races. It is the malaise in the hearts of the people of the United States, China, the EU and, lets face it, all the nations of the world. It is what compels us to force our ideas on everybody else even if the enforcement means dropping bombs on those who refuse to acknowledge our chosen-by-Godness.

I cannot work out how a universal god could be anything other than universal in its calling of its creatures. A god who has favourites is not a god, is no different to a human being. It is tragically ironic that a religion that finds the idea of God becoming human abhorrent has, itself, been the most influential proponent of a god whose love is so human in its inability to be universal.

The belief that God chooses who God will favour and the repugnant doctrines of election and predestination that spring, logically from it, are thoroughly bad ideas. We need to exile them from our religions and the best place to start would be with Judaism. We need to ditch the political correctness and tell Israel, "You are not the Messiah, you are a very naughty boy, just like the rest of us. Drop the racial purity crap, go forth and screw around!"

PLEASE NOTE: Through the powers invested in me etc. etc. I will personally remove from god's favour anybody who is so tediously boring and predictable as to leave a comment along the lines of "Judaism isn't all bad." Please take it as read that we all know that already.

ASK DOCTOR MADPRIEST

I have received an email from "Confused of Australia" who asks:

"When I "struggle with opposite sex attraction" does it mean that I am not really heterosexual?"

This is a question that all red blooded guys and feisty little sheilas will ask themselves at some point in their lives. You are right to be concerned as heterosexuality is a problem that affects nine out of ten people on this planet and although it is not sinful in itself it can lead to sufferers doing naughty things to each other which, quite honestly, decent Christian folk prefer not to talk about.

Fortunately for you, Confused, there is a tried and tested clinically proven remedy for your ailment - a regime that if followed faithfully will soon lead to you never having any thoughts about doing naughty stuff ever again. For those struggling with opposite sex attraction (and this applies to women and men alike) Christians have always recommended aversion therapy. Its technical name is holy matrimony and troubled heterosexuals can sign up for a life long course at their local parish church.

THE MIDNIGHT JUKEBOX

I love it when some old rocker, long passed his or her glory days, who has been treading water maybe for quite a few decades, suddenly and out of the blue, releases a stonker of an album that blows the efforts of most of the trendy, bright young things out of the water. When it happens it's a wonderful up yours to youth and I fully approve of that.

Jah Wobble has been decidedly uninspiring for a good twenty years or so. So, you could have knocked me down with a feather when I heard his new album and realised that Mr Wobble had released an album full of stuff easily as good as anything he did with P.I.L. Mind you, the presence of his old Public Image bandmate, Keith Levene, on the credits should have alerted me to such a possibility.

"Psychic Life" is a wonderful, bass-laden legal high of an album that will certainly blow out any cobwebs that have accumulated between your lugholes since the last time you got your copy of "Metal Box" out of its can and shoved it on the turntable.

CONFESSING ANGLICANS' MOAN FEST
TURNS INTO ANN SUMMERS PARTY

From VIRTUE ONLINE:

At the conference of the Fellowship of Confessing Anglicans on Human Rights, the Bible and AIDS in Durban South Africa on Friday November 4th, Dermot O'Callaghan, a member of the Church of Ireland General Synod, surveyed the battle against AIDS in which he demonstrated how an end to multiple sexual partners would bring an end to the epidemic.

He also critiqued the report in the Anglican Communion's book on Sexuality edited by Philip Groves on the Nature/Nurture debate. He argued that same-sex attraction was neither a choice nor an innate condition, but overwhelmingly attributable to factors experienced during childhood.

COMMENT: He demonstrated it? The mind boggles.

Canon Vinay Samuel of the Oxford Centre for Religion and Public Life said that "People are increasingly taking freedoms and turning them into rights and demanding that governments and other institutions supply them.

"I cannot supply what you demand if it goes against my freedom to believe that you are wrong" is the reply he suggested should be made. "You are demanding more than freedom in demanding that that I supply your rights and so undermine my freedom."

COMMENT: Erm, Rev. Samuel is just saying that he is more important than people he doesn't approve of, that his freedom is more important than anybody else's. Well, he might not be very clever but at least he is honest about his unchristian selfishness, I suppose.

MAD DAD'S TOTALLY SEXIST JOKE OF THE DAY

I was in Costco the other day, pushing a cart around, when I collided with a young guy also pushing his cart.

I said to the young guy, "Sorry about that. I'm looking for my wife and I guess I wasn't paying attention to where I was going.."

The young guy says, "That's OK. And what a coincidence. I'm looking for my wife, too. I can't find her and I'm getting a little desperate.

So, I said, "Well, maybe we can help each other. What does your wife look like?"

The young guy says, "Well, she is 24 years old, tall, with blond hair, green eyes, long legs, big boobs and she's wearing tight white shorts, a halter top and no bra. What does your wife look like?"

I said, "Doesn't matter. Let's look for yours."

Most old guys are helpful like that.

From THE TELEGRAPH:

A thug who was caught on CCTV swinging a terrified cat by its tail is being hunted by the RSPCA.

Mowgli, a two-year-old tom, narrowly escaped injury in the “sickening” attack as the unidentified man span him around more than 14 times next to railings and cars, coming within inches of smashing the cat’s head on the pavement. The attack was witnessed by Miss Buchanan’s next-door neighbour, Lynne Jarvis, 62, who ran outside in her dressing gown and confronted the youth and three of his friends who were egging him on.

Mrs Jarvis said: “I heard a demonic laugh and a commotion and looked outside to see someone swinging something around. At first I thought it was a black cardigan but then I realised it was Mowgli. I put my boots and my dressing gown on and screamed and swore at them, shouting that they were cruel and evil so-and-so's. I think I shocked them because I’m not a pretty sight that early in the morning and they probably weren’t expecting a pensioner to use the sort of language I did. He dropped the cat and they all ran off down the street.”

I haven't been employed by anybody in about 13 years, some of the time due to illness, and some of the time because I was self-employed working with my hubby.

After I was widowed in 2009, I was left with no livelihood, the banks froze the business bank accounts and wouldn't even release enough to pay for the funeral (thank goodness for parents, they're the best!) until probate was granted, and I was 40 when Ian died, so I was too young to qualify for widows benefit, so I had to sell the shop to pay off the debts I had inherited. I was in a bit of a financial state, to say the least.

However, after investing some of the money that I was eventually left with and using some to do stuff to the house that was looong overdue, I have been living off the remainder whilst searching for work. It's taken a long time but I finally got as far as an interview this morning, and by this afternoon I had a job!!

Not bad for someone who's a bit rusty and hasn't had an interview since 1988, what?

THE MIDNIGHT JUKEBOX

One of our most accomplished exponents of traditional song, June Tabor, has once again teamed up with folk-rock heroes Oysterband to produce a collaborative collection, Ragged Kingdom. As with their former hugely successful meeting of minds, Freedom And Rain (21 years ago… you can’t rush these things), the amalgamation of June Tabor’s regal voice and Oysterband’s lively eclecticism promises much and delivers even more. There’s plenty in here for your average ballad geek to get excited about, as well as some first class interpretations of contemporary song.

June Tabor and Oysterband have provided far more than a heady mix of traditional ballads and contemporary songwriting. The album raises the spirit and tears at the soul in turn. It takes all the artists involved in new directions, each and every one of them revelling in the exploration of uncharted territory. The band have succeeded in creating something that, while instantly recognizable as June Tabor, fully representative of Oysterband, also becomes far more than the sum of its parts.
(Folk Radio UK)

To be honest I don't feel anywhere near as exuberant about this album as the above reviewer. I find it a bit bland, as if the performers were only half interested in the project. Also, I think the choice of songs is uninspiring, especially the covers which don't have anything added to them in June and the band's performances. But do bear in mind I am talking about the great June Tabor here. She can be so extremely good that when she is merely average you really notice.

Anyway, here's a few tracks off the album and you can decide for yourselves (as if I need to give you lot permission to do that).

WELL, YES

ON THE FEAST OF ST. MARGERY KEMPE

NOT MY CHURCH OF ENGLAND

The "Church of England Newspaper" has absolutely nothing to do with the official Church of England and is about as Anglican as ACNA (in other words, not at all). It has a very low weekly circulation compared to "The Church Times," equal to just a third of the "unique" vistors who visit OCICBW.... This is good because it is a nasty little rag.

From THE GUARDIAN:

An Anglican newspaper has defended the publication of an article that compares gay rights campaigners to Nazis, saying the author has "pertinent views". The column, by former east London councillor Alan Craig, appeared in the 28 October edition of the Church of England Newspaper.

In his column Craig referred to a number of high-profile legal cases where Christians claim to have been penalised for their views on homosexuality.

He wrote: "Having forcibly – and understandably – rectified the Versailles-type injustices and humiliations foisted on the homosexual community, the UK's victorious Gaystapo are now on a roll. Their gay-rights stormtroopers take no prisoners as they annex our wider culture, and hotel owners, registrars, magistrates, doctors, counsellors, and foster parents find themselves crushed under the pink jackboot.

"Thanks especially to the green light from a permissive New Labour government, the gay Wehrmacht is on its long march through the institutions and has already occupied the Sudetenland social uplands of the Home Office, the educational establishment, the politically-correct police. Following a plethora of equalities legislation, homosexuals are now protected and privileged by sexual orientation regulations and have achieved legal equality by way of civil partnerships. But it's only 1938 and Nazi expansionist ambitions are far from sated."

Craig told the Guardian he was "pretty careful" to distinguish between the leadership of gay rights groups and "ordinary gay people".

COMMENT: Well that's okay then, NOT!

Do not think for one moment that Alan "Winston" Craig is a lone voice in English evangelicalism. Mark "Hawkeye" Harris has posted on the pressure group, FULCRUM, at PRELUDIUM today. Although they claim to be evangelical centrists, compassionate and thoughtful, their eagerness to align the Church of England with the aggressively homophobic and misogynist provinces of the Anglican Communion conclusively demonstrates, in my opinion, that they are merely, to use Craig's language, their faction's equivalent of the Theresienstadt concentration camp. I have no idea why evangelicals hate so many people but prejudice and bigotry are obviously inherent in the psyche of the vast majority of bible worshippers. Thank goodness there are open and honest evangelicals like Alan Craig around who are prepared to tell the whole world what these distorters of the Gospel really believe.

But, as the interviewee in the following news report clearly shows, by funding the legal actions of their masters which aim to maintain homophobia as legally allowable throughout the world, Roman Catholics are all constructively part of the continuing institutional prejudice against gay people promoted by their denomination, in a far more real and enabling way than members of most other mainstream religions. Any Roman Catholic who is truthfully against the continuation of such homophobic actions, at least those aimed to influence decisions outside of their own denomination, should simply not give any money whatsoever to the Roman Catholic hierarchy. There are plenty of Roman Catholic charities through which money is only given to specific good causes that Roman Catholics of integrity could (should) give their offertory to each week. There is no law stating that they have to pay "a tax" to their church so they cannot use the same, perfectly valid, excuse that pacifists can claim when they are forcibly made to hand over money in legal taxes, much of which goes towards killing people in foreign lands.

From ON TOP MAGAZINE:

New York Archbishop, Timothy Dolan, has banned marriages between members of the same sex from taking place in Roman Catholic churches. The New York State Legislature recently enacted a law that recognized same-sex union as marriage in the State of New York.

“The marital union between one man and one woman was universally accepted by civil law* as a constitutive element of human society, which is vital to the human family and to the continuation of the human race,” Dolan wrote in his official statement issued last month.

Rosemary Palladino, an attorney who plans to wed her partner of 38 years stated in reply, “The bill was not about making Catholic Churches or other churches perform marriages for same-sex couples. It was about making civil marriage available to same-sex couples, regardless of what religion they follow or don't follow.”

I especially wonder how many of their members approve of the fact that their donations are being used to wage these legal battles,” she added.

*Well that's bollocks for a start. There are plenty of countries in the world where civil law no longer makes that claim, so it's hardly "universal," and, of course, the fact that the New York legislature has passed a law that overrides such previous law within its legislation also gives the lie to the disingenuous, self-hating clergyman's statement.

WORSHIP AT ST. LAIKA'S

HOLY COMMUNION

THIRD SUNDAY
BEFORE ADVENT

All are welcome to join me in taking communion. There are no exceptions.

The order of service is posted beneath the audio file so that you can join in with the service. The words in bold type are the ones we say together.

If you want to physically partake of communion you will require a small piece of bread and a small amount of drink (preferably made from grapes and containing alcohol). You eat the bread after I say “The body of Christ,” and drink the wine after I say “The blood of Christ.” How you view the nature of this part of the service is completely up to you.

PRAYER OVER THE GIFT

The Lord is here.
God's Spirit is with us.

Lift up your hearts.
We lift them to the Lord.

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
It is right to give thanks and praise.

It is indeed right, our duty and our joy...
...for ever praising you and saying:

Holy, holy, holy Lord,
God of power and might,
heaven and earth are full of your glory.
Hosanna in the highest.
Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.
Hosanna in the highest.

We praise and bless you, loving Father…
…until he comes in glory.

Great is the mystery of faith.
Christ has died,
Christ is risen,
Christ will come again.

Lord of all life…
…for ever and ever. Amen.

Let us pray with confidence as our Saviour has taught us

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done; on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

Every time we eat this bread and drink this cup,
we proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes.

Jesus, Lamb of God,
have mercy on us.

Jesus, bearer of our sins,
have mercy on us.

Jesus, redeemer of the world,
grant us peace.

Jesus is the Lamb of God
who takes away the sin of the world.
Blessed are those who are called to his supper.
Lord, I am not worthy to receive you,
but only say the word, and I shall be healed.

The body of Christ. Amen.

The blood of Christ. Amen.

POST COMMUNION PRAYER

"O Lord Our God, Arise" - Ely Cathedral Choir

O Lord our God, arise!
The cause of truth maintain,
And wide o'er all the peopled world
Extend thy blessed reign.

Thou Prince of life, arise!
Nor let thy glory cease;
Far spread the conquests of thy grace,
And bless the earth with peace.

O Holy Ghost, arise!
Expand thy quickening wing,
And o'er a dark and ruined world
Let light and order spring.

All on the earth, arise!
To God the Savior sing;
From shore to shore, from earth to heaven,
Let echoing anthems ring.

Yours, Lord, is the greatness, the power,
the glory, the splendour and the majesty;
for everything in heaven and on earth is yours.

Yours, Lord, is the kingdom:
and you are exalted as head over all. Amen.

THE BLESSING

My sisters and brothers, go in the peace of Christ.
Thanks be to God.
