DEATH OF A FRIEND

Glenna, the dog who was supposed to live forever, died this evening. This afternoon she was running around on the beach with Delphi but when we returned home she suffered a seizure and, within the hour, had passed away.

When this year started I had such high hopes. I really thought things were going to go well for me for a change. Instead I have said goodbye to my best ever cat, Henry and my best ever dog, Glenna. How can a poor man stand such times and live?

  2. Oh, Jonathan, I'm so, so sorry. Your dogs were blessed with more than worthy owners and so many runs on the beach. My heart goes out to you.

    Anon., I pity you for never having loved a dog.

  3. Deeply saddened to hear of your losses Jonathan. In my 74yrs. I've had a lot of deeply loved friends pass on so I know how hard it is. Doesn't seem right (poor planning somewhere) that some of our dearest companions have such comparatively short life spans, eh? Condolences friend.

    I'm so sorry, Jonathan. Your furry companions were and are lucky to have you. You and yours have my deepest sympathy--it has been a rough year for pets in our household, too, and I understand how bereft you feel. She was such a lovely lady.

  7. We are very sorry to hear this Jonathan. It is never easy to lose an old friend, and the unconditional affection dogs show us makes it that much harder. Our two Cavaliers both have congestive heart failure, and I suspect we will be joining you far sooner than we would have expected..... Peace to Glenna.

  8. Jonathan, tears are running down my face and my heart is aching for you. I still miss my little buddy every day and you will also. The only consolation for you is that she did not have to linger and suffer. It is so very hard.

    This verse from You Can't Go Home Again has always helped me when I deal with death,

    "Something has spoken to me in the night,
    Burning the tapers of the waning year;
    Something has spoken in the night,
    And told me I shall die, I know not where.

    Saying:
    "To lose the earth you know, for greater knowing;
    To lose the life you have, for greater life;
    To leave the friends you loved, for greater loving;
    To find a land more kind than home, more larger than earth-

    "Whereon the pillars of this earth are founded,
    Toward which the conscience of the world is tending-
    A wind is rising, and the rivers flow."

    Thomas Wolfe

    A huge hug to you. Blessings.

  11. THIS IS AWFUL but my god the awfulness of Anon...what a pathetic, awful pratt s/he is.

    Jonathan, no words can take away the grief. Dogs endlessly remind us of who we aspire to be, because they love us as though we are the best of people. Glenna lived a fine life to the fullest, and knew nothing but love. you gave her the best gift man can give dog, which is to love them as unconditionally as they love us. And that means you have known unconditional love, and does that mean we learn God from Dog?

    I am so sorry at this news and so sad that we are thousands of mile apart. Because I would like to join you in the wake that will celebrate Glenna, and remind you that she loved you unconditionally, as all of us are meant to be loved. Since I cannot be there, please raise a pint in her honor and toast her on the journey to the golden tail.

    Hugs, blessings, and much love.

      Most profoundly well-said, IT.

      Wish I could be at Glenna's wake w/ you too, {{{MP}}}. Your best girl had the best pack leader.

  12. Jonathan+, I am truly sorry for this unexpected and heartwrenching loss amidst everything else. Nothing anyone says who is too cowardly to go by their true name, is merely dust in the wind. Their words are empty and meaningless. You know who truly cares for you. By the way Anon, you shouldn't talk about yourself like that in public.

  16. My dearest friend, as I said over on facebook, I send you my most sincere sympathy. I know what it is like to love (and lose) an exceptionally GREAT dog (I'm thinking of my wonderful Izzy, of blessed memory) and my heart is pained for you.

    And I am particularly touched by what IT said here.

    Anonymous is really beyond pathetic.

  17. My deepest sympathies over so sudden and terrible a loss of a dear old friend.

    "Heaven goes by favor; if it went by merit, you would stay out and your dog would go in."--Mark Twain

    Glenna is there now to make sure you get in.

  19. This is so very sad - the loss of a beloved dog is unlike any other loss. Sincere condolences, MP.

  20. My deepest sympathies. Losing such a close and caring companion is beyond sadness. And dogs are so much more loving, forgiving and selfless than humans.

    (Especially those who are too cowardly to provide their names)

  21. Dear Jonathan, this is just so, so sad! I agree 100% with what IT said. Just recently you celebrated Glenna's birthday and posted those wonderful pictures! Cling to those magnificent memories and all the unconditional love that you shared. Glenna gave you a taste of heaven which she now enjoys to the full.

    May God comfort you in your sorrow!

    Prayers and lots of love from me and the Four Cats.

  22. MP,

    I am so very sorry for your loss. Having lived with several dogs over my days, I know the unique pain that comes with our canine friends crossing over. Times like this are reminders that we all have but a short span on this earth and that we should cherish the days given to us, the world in which we live and those who we share it with.

    Something I learned from my Sara, may she sleep warmly and play gently beyond the veil.

  23. Jonathan... Prayers, tears, and all my love to you and Mrs. MP and Delphi (who may miss Glenna the most). Be comforted knowing the joy she brought you all these years, and knowing the selfless love and care you gave to her that made her life a splendid and happy one.

  24. My heart goes out to you and your loved ones! I celebrate Glenna and your relationship with her!

    I know what it is to lose the “best-ever dog.” I still miss mine every day. There will always be an empty place in our hearts for these beloved companions, even though other dogs fill our lives and hearts in other ways. According to The Legend of the Rainbow Bridge, our dogs are waiting for us just this side of heaven so we can cross over together someday.

    Thanks to everyone who left comments here, especially the Thomas Wolfe poem. These help me with my own grief over lost pets.

  26. My sympathies also. It is hard to lose an old furry friend. It sounds, though, like she had a good last day, playing on the beach. I can only hope my own last day is that good. Prayers.

  27. FYI everyone, AnonTroll attacked me on my blog today, so you all be watchful on your blogs too. It [AnonTroll] is truly to be pitied and prayed for...

    Jonathan, Muffy, Max and Dragon are all greeting Glenna, as are all of our families' pets from before...you and Mrs MP will see her again in heaven.

  32. Have lost a couple of dogs in my time too, and shed tears over them both, especially our Patch, who was with us about as long as your Glenna. My thoughts and prayers are with you and the gang, Jonathan.

  35. My heart goes out to you MP. You bring me much insight and pleasure as I read your blog and I am sad to think you have had such a loss. When our cat died we read this poem at her burial. http://www.poets.org/viewmedia.php/prmMID/20534
    You may know of the 'my cat jeoffrey' already. I know Glenna will be much loved now and in the future.

  36. Jonathon, I am so sorry to read of this.

    Glenna has crossed the rainbow bridge and awaits you while she plays with Henry. Those we love are there for us, when it is our time to make the journey. But that does not make the loss any less painful.

    Prayers for you, Mrs. Madpriest and all the Mad gang as you mourn. "Those that mourn shall be comforted." I believe that, although it is going to be difficult for you to see it for a while.
