From THE ASSOCIATED PRESS:
Pope Benedict XVI has called on infertile couples to shun artificial procreation, saying such methods are a form of arrogance. He spoke Saturday at the end of a three-day Vatican conference on diagnosing and treating infertility. Reiterating Vatican teaching, he called marriage the only permissible place to conceive children. He also pressed a church ban against artificial procreation. He said infertile couples should resist resorting to any method to try to conceive other than sex between husband and wife.

A GOOD QUESTION
This morning I received the following email:
I have a burning question about the holy communion. What is holy communion and why do people take it?
I have posted my response on THE OPEN FORUM at Saint Laika's. You can critique my answer and add your own ideas. In fact, it would be lovely if you did. It would make me feel like I was part of a communion of sorts.

BISHOPS SHOULD BE SEEN BUT NOT HEARD
So, the Bishop of York, who recently made very clear his views on same sex marriage, is now trying to clear himself of the homophobic rap. Unfortunately for the Anglican Communion in general, and the Church of England in particular, his idea of "loving the sinner" is to insist that they deserve the same respect as rapists of children and not be executed for being gay.
Well, thanks, John. But, quite honestly, I think it would be better for the, already well damaged, reputation of Christianity in my country if you just shut up about it. You are not making anything better in the slightest.
From THE LAMBETH MINISTRY OF PROPAGANDA:
The Archbishop of York has today repeated his opposition to David Bahati MP’s Private Members Bill in Uganda which seeks to prosecute gay people. The Archbishop previously issued a statement in 2009 when the Bill was first brought before the Ugandan Parliament.
The Archbishop said: “The Anglican Church in Uganda submitted its views on David Bahati’s Private Member’s Bill formally when it was first tabled, and made clear that they were not in favour of introducing a death penalty for homosexuality. I completely support that position.
“It is important that across the world we stand in solidarity with people, flesh of our flesh, who are being in many cases victimized or demonized because of their sexual orientation.
“The Dromantine Communiqué in 2005 issued by the Primates of the Anglican Communion said that we wish to make it clear that our discussion and assessment of moral appropriateness of specific behaviours would continue unreservedly to be committed to the pastoral support and care of homosexual people.
“The victimisation or diminishment of human beings whose affections happen to be ordered towards people of the same sex is an anathema. Homosexual people are children of God, loved and valued by Him and deserving the best we can give - pastoral care and friendship. That is where the Communion stands.
“Sadly, this particular high, extreme, sentencing already exists in Uganda in relation to other practices. For example, the penal code in cases of rape (what they call “aggravated sexuality”) or if you have sex with a girl under the age of 18, you are liable to suffer the death penalty. As a matter of principle, I am totally opposed to the use of the death penalty in any instance.
“No-one should have to live under the threat of violence and death, or live in fear because of the bigotry of others. Such violence has been consistently condemned by the Anglican Communion worldwide, and by myself – particularly in the Primates of the Anglican Communion statement in Dublin in 2010 issued following the murder of former York resident David Kato in Uganda.
“Every person has the right to enjoy safety and security regardless of their beliefs or sexual orientation – we are all created in God’s image and likeness. That image is in all of us and not just in some of us.
“We are all created by the God of love, and are of infinite worth in his sight. Homosexual people in Uganda deserve the best we can give in pastoral care and friendship, and I am quite sure that the response the Church of Uganda will make will have to take account of all these realities.”

BISHOPS' POWER GRAB HEADING
FOR DEFEAT IN ENGLAND
From THE CHURCH TIMES:
Almost a quarter of C of E dioceses have now voted against the Anglican Covenant. It was debated last weekend by the diocesan synods of Leicester, Portsmouth, Salisbury, and Rochester, and rejected by all of them — in some cases, despite impassioned pleas from bishops.
Just five of 15 English dioceses have so far approved the Covenant, which must be debated by diocesan synods by the end of March. Approval by 23 diocesan synods is required for the Covenant to return to the General Synod. Rejection by 22 dioceses would effectively derail approval of the Covenant by the Church of England.
COMMENT: I won't be remembered for derailing the Anglican Covenant in England, but I know I started it and I even predicted that it would be the laity who would not go for it. My people, I love them.

THE AUSTRALIAN PHELPS FAMILY
The Family Firm must think we've all forgotten their financial shenanigans of the other year as they seem to be showing their fangs again in public. You know, it wouldn't surprise me in the least if they started turning up at soldiers' funerals with "God Hates Fags" placards, they are so hate filled and homophobic.
From THE STAR OBSERVER:
An interstate spat has erupted between (so-called) Anglicans, with the Sydney-based evangelical Anglican Church League (run by the Family Firms's managing director) attacking the Diocese of Gippsland in Victoria. At issue is the appointment of an openly gay man in a relationship to lead one of the diocese’s parishes.
The ACL called on Gippsland Bishop John McIntyre on February 12 to rescind the appointment of the Reverend David Head as Hayfield parish priest, calling the decision “dismaying”. The ACL claimed the appointment conflicted with a resolution made at the Anglican Communion’s 1998 Lambeth Conference and the views of the General Synod of the Australian church.
However, Bishop McIntyre told the Star Observer that Head’s appointment was not in breach of the Lambeth ruling or the General Synod.
“I have not ordained anyone ‘involved in same gender unions’ to quote the [Lambeth] motion. I have appointed a priest in good standing from the Diocese of Melbourne to a position in the Diocese of Gippsland. He was ordained over 30 years ago, has exercised good and faithful ministry in that diocese up until January this year, and he fulfils all the current criteria to be determined canonically fit to be licensed in an Anglican diocese anywhere in the world."
McIntyre said his diocese never asked about the sexuality of clergy before ordaining or appointing them.
“Accordingly, I did not ask that question of David before appointing him. He was appointed by me on the request of the people of the parish in which he now serves because they believed his ministry experience and gifts made him the right priest for the job, and they believed him to be called by God to that ministry, as do I.”
McIntyre said he took Lambeth Resolution 1.10 very seriously as it also calls on Anglicans to condemn homophobia, minister sensitively to homosexual people, and assure that homosexual people know they are loved by God.

It is the task of Anglicans to unite theologies of incarnation and theologies of atonement. It is Anglicanism's gift to the people of God.
To debate this proposition, go to the OPEN FORUM at Saint Laika's.
Also under discussion at the moment are the following topics:
Mary as co-redemptrix
Is evil intelligent?
What should be the Church's attitude to other faiths?
Can we do church on the internet?
If none these hot potatoes take your fancy then feel free to start your own topic for discussion. The debates so far have been extremely interesting and of a very high quality. But then, that is only what I would expect from such erudite peeps such as yourselves.

A service like this costs me about £15.00 to put together. As my internet ministry is my only source of income I invite you, if you have enjoyed it or found it useful, to make a small donation to allow me to continue this work. I would suggest £1.00 ($1.50) as being appropriate, but more or less is okay with me. In fact, nothing at all is okay with me. I'd rather you listened than didn't listen because you are unable or unwilling to donate anything at this time.

A NATION OF DOG HATERS
From NY DAILY NEWS:
Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show (U.S.A.) has fired its TV sponsor of the past 24 years, Pedigree, because Pedigree's ads encouraging adoption of shelter dogs were deemed too depressing.
“The feedback we got from our primary audience was that they were seeing commercials that made them want to turn the channel,” Westminster spokesman and USA network on-air commentator David Frei told the Associated Press. One of the spots Pedigree ran during past Westminster shows featured shots of dogs sitting alone in shelters. Most were mixed breeds, and the spot encouraged viewers to adopt dogs from shelters.
"Show me an ad with a dog with a smile. Don’t shame me,” Frei said. “We told them [Pedigree] that and they ignored us.”
Westminster, like virtually all American Kennel Club-sanctioned dog shows, features purebred dogs, and Pedigree Brand Manager Lisa Campbell, in an interview with Ad Age, suggested Westminster might have been uncomfortable with the ads’ emphasis on shelter dogs.
“Their long-term vision is completely focused on purebred dogs,” she said. “We are focused on all dogs.”
COMMENT: OCICBW... gives a big thumbs up for actually caring a bit about the animals they make so much money out of.
OCICBW... despairs of Frei and his poncey kennel club but isn't surprised - anybody who will cripple and deform dogs, by breeding for looks not health and intelligence, obviously doesn't give a shit about the welfare of dogs. I'd neuter the lot of them.
But our main condemnation, our "Biggest Bastard in Show" award, goes to Purina, Westminster's new sponsor, for jumping in and snatching the goodies so eagerly. I hope whoever sanctioned and delighted in that bit of business falls into a cesspit of dog poo in front of a whole rescue centre of homeless pooches. If I was there when it happened I'd shout, "How's that for depressing!" at the nasty little hypocrite.

THE MIDNIGHT JUKEBOX
I've been a huge fan of Billy Paul for nigh on forty years. Of all those great singers who had one foot in the soul camp and one foot in the jazz camp during the 1970s, he is my favourite. And "Me and Mrs Jones" by Billy has to be an all time classic performance in everybody's book (at least everybody who has the ability to appreciate true class).
But tonight I'm playing you his version of "Windy" (which really is an unfortunate name for a record and if there ever was a woman called Windy in real life my heart goes out to her). I've chosen this track for the jukebox tonight for the simple reason that I've been playing it over and over again on my iPod this week. Sometimes I get stuck on a particular record especially if it cheers me up like this one does.
So close your eyes and imagine it's a summer's day back in the late sixties and you are lying on your back in the grass alongside some hippie chick or hippie dude (whatever takes your fancy) who you just know is going to say "yes" later when the sun goes down. Then press play and enjoy!
A CONVENIENT DEFINITION OF MARRIAGE
George Carey is all over the English press because he's just helped launch something called the Coalition for Marriage.
In the Mail on Sunday he gave all sorts of reasons as to why marriage should only be between a man and a woman. He mainly goes on about bringing up children. He does not, however, say that marriage should be restricted to men and women because the purpose of marriage is to make babies. Many of his co-conspirators do believe this. But George does not mention it.
Many same sex couples want to get married even though they do not fit into George's definition of traditional marriage. They are told that as they cannot make babies, they cannot call their union a marriage.
George's son, Mark and his wife are married, have been for many years.
George's definition of marriage is very convenient and adaptable. It seems to depend on who he is prepared to upset and who he doesn't want to upset.
Come off it, George! There's no such thing as a perfect marriage as defined by you and your cronies as you know full well from watching the tears being shed. You can't just draw the line where it suits you and your particular circumstances. I accuse you of inconsistency bordering on the grossly hypocritical.

Ben Summerskill, chief executive of gay, lesbian and bisexual charity Stonewall, said: "Our strong advice to anyone who disagrees with same-sex marriage is not to get married to someone of the same sex."

ARE WE REALLY THAT SPECIAL?
From Terry:
The opening words of Hebrews are, "At various times in the past and in various different ways, God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets; but in our own time, the last days, he has spoken to us through his Son...". Does this confine God's earlier revelation to the people of Israel through their Hebrew prophets, or is it possible that God has also spoken to other ancient peoples through their own indigenous equivalents of Hebrew prophets in whatever cultural form that took? We now recognise that God's revelation to us located in time and space as we are has been conveyed to us historically and in a distinct cultural context. Revelation did not occur in a vacuum. Revelation also appears to be progressive in a historical sense. We read of enemy nations being "put to the ban" at the beginning of Israel's history and not towards the end. It is also common experience for Christians living overseas in a non-Christian culture to observe fairly quickly that holiness and transparent goodness are not confined to Christians. In fact, to our shame we often discover the opposite to be the case. What are we to make of this? In the face of obvious goodness and holiness can we honestly deny the presence of God's activity in these other faiths? In short, what should the Church's attitude be towards other faiths in a Post-Modern world? A corollary to this would be to ask what is the Church's missionary role in a Post-Modern world?

MADPRIEST'S THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
The only reason that the Bible claims that the universe was created in 6 days is because Jesus wouldn't have been able to get a job if he put that he was 13.75 billion years old on his C.V. You know how ageist employers can be.
THE SECOND AMERICAN CIVIL WAR
At this precise moment the BBC News channel is showing an interview with a little girl. She is homeless and her mother is eating rats to stay alive. Before this interview they went down into the storm drains of Los Angeles where three to four hundred people live and where every time it rains they are flooded out.
The United States of America is in the middle of their second civil war. People are dying like they do in any war but it's not being reported as a war because the side that is winning has complete control of the media. What is more nobody has died on the winning side yet. But it's only a matter of time.
After the Berlin Wall came down the rich in the west started to believe that they could do whatever they wanted and that there was no one around who could stop them. But it is my opinion as an outsider that in the United States the situation is very near the tipping point. Very soon the poor of America will realise that their lives are not worth living and at that point they will become prepared to fight back even knowing that they may die doing so.
My prediction is that as soon as this happens in the USA it will start to spread throughout the western world. The rich of the west think the Arab Spring is restricted to just muslim countries. I think it is a muslim response to an evil that is being done throughout the world and that it is only a matter of time before their revolutionary fervour starts to spread outside the muslim world.
It's happened before.
