OH BUGGER, IT'S CHRISTMAS AGAIN (3)
Despite the fact that I have been posting these Christmas songs every Advent for the last six years there are still people out there who misunderstand their purpose entirely. In fact, they seem to misunderstand what the entire Christmas festivities are all about entirely.
To address this naivety among the nicer people who read my blog I am reposting here a comment I left under an previous Oh Bugger, It's Christmas Again selection.
Christmas is not a time to be happy. It's a time to truly understand how much more other people have than you have yourself. My musical selections are to get you in the right frame of mind to feel the misery not to cheer you up.
If you are still having problems attaining the right level of grouchiness for this time of year then give this particularly horrible version of "Frosty The Snowman" a listen. It should do the trick.
DARKEST AFRICA
Dear friends,
The Ugandan Parliament is set to pass a brutal law that may carry the death penalty for homosexuality. If they do, thousands of Ugandans could face execution or life imprisonment -- just for being gay.
We've helped stop this bill before, and we can do it again. After a massive global outcry last year, Ugandan President Museveni blocked the bill's progress. But political unrest is mounting in Uganda, and religious extremists in Parliament are hoping confusion and violence in the streets will distract the international community from a second push to pass this hate-filled law. We can show them that the world is still watching.
We have no time to lose. Let’s get one million voices against Uganda's horrific anti-gay law in the next 24 hours -- we'll deliver it to Uganda's leaders and key countries. Click here to take action, then forward this email to everyone:

Being gay in Uganda is already dangerous and terrifying. LGBT Ugandans are regularly harassed and beaten, and just last year gay rights activist David Kato (pictured above) was brutally murdered in his own home. Now they are threatened by this draconian law which could impose life imprisonment for people convicted of same-sex relations, and the death penalty for “serial offenders”. Even NGOs working to prevent the spread of HIV can be imprisoned for “promoting homosexuality” under this hate-filled law.
Right now, Uganda is in political turmoil -- missing millions of aid money has embroiled the Parliament in scandal. This upheaval has provided religious extremists in Parliament the perfect chance to slip in the shelved anti-gay bill, calling it a "Christmas gift" to Ugandans.
President Museveni backed away from this bill before, after international pressure threatened Uganda's support. Let's build a million strong petition to stop the horrific anti-gay law again, and save lives. We only have hours -- sign below, then tell friends and family:

Last time, our international petition condemning the gay death penalty law was delivered to Parliament – spurring a global news story and enough pressure to block the bill for months. When a tabloid newspaper published 100 names, pictures and addresses, of suspected gays and those identified were threatened, Avaaz supported a legal case against the paper and we won! Together we have stood up, time and time again, for Uganda’s gay community -- now they need us more than ever.
With hope and determination,
Emma, Iain, Alice, Luis, Ricken, Joseph, Michelle and the whole Avaaz team

OH BUGGER IT'S CHRISTMAS AGAIN (2)
Just a hundred days off purgatory for getting through this one. But, hey, you're sure to do something naughty during the season of good will so every day off counts.
LOUD FRIDAY
![]() |
| "Allelujah! Don’t Bend! Ascend!" The new album by Godspeed You! Black Emperor |
The band took its name from God Speed You! Black Emperor, a 1976 Japanese black-and-white documentary by director Mitsuo Yanagimachi, which follows the exploits of a Japanese biker gang, the Black Emperors. The band was formed in 1995 in Montreal, Quebec.
After stopping at a local gas station for fuel in the town of Ardmore, Oklahoma, during their 2003 tour of the United States, the station attendant working that day believed the group of Canadians to be terrorists. She quickly passed a note to another customer also getting fuel to call the police. When the local police appeared, the group was held until they could be questioned by the FBI. Although the police were suspicious of the band's anti-government documents and some photos they had (such as those of oil rigs), they found no incriminating evidence. After background checks were run, the ensemble was released from custody and continued on their way to their next show in Columbia, MO. Efrim Menuck later spoke to the crowd about what happened to them during their appearance in Missouri and speculated that their origin was a motive for being released quickly ("It's a good thing we're nice white kids from Canada"), hinting at racism in the police force. The incident was mentioned in Michael Moore's book Dude, Where's My Country? (WIKIPEDIA)

This song was recommended to me by my friend, Mark.
It's cheesy but it's good cheesy.

A PRIEST FOREVER
Some inevitable news about one of OCICBW...'s Roman Catholic heroes. You just know that the Vatican's Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith would have been shouting louder than anybody else that Christ should be crucified if they had been around at the time. The mindset of the upper echelons of the Roman Catholic hierarchy is exactly the same as that of the religious and secular leaders who wanted Christ silenced. Even the reasons they give for their actions are the same.
From THE NATIONAL CATHOLIC REPORTER:
Roy Bourgeois, a longtime peace activist and priest who had come under scrutiny for his support of women's ordination, has been dismissed from the Maryknoll Fathers and Brothers, which he served for 45 years, according to the congregation.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
The Congregation For The Doctrine Of The Faith
Canonically Dismisses Roy Bourgeois
Maryknoll, New York – November 19, 2012 – The Vatican’s Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, on October 4, 2012, canonically dismissed Roy Bourgeois from the Catholic Foreign Mission Society of America, also known as the Maryknoll Fathers and Brothers. The decision dispenses the Maryknoll priest from his sacred bonds.
As a priest during 2008, Mr. Bourgeois participated in the invalid ordination of a woman and a simulated Mass in Lexington, Kentucky. With patience, the Holy See and the Maryknoll Society have encouraged his reconciliation with the Catholic Church.
Instead, Mr. Bourgeois chose to campaign against the teachings of the Catholic Church in secular and non-Catholic venues. This was done without the permission of the local U.S. Catholic Bishops and while ignoring the sensitivities of the faithful across the country. Disobedience and preaching against the teaching of the Catholic Church about women’s ordination led to his excommunication, dismissal and laicization.
Mr. Bourgeois freely chose his views and actions, and all the members of the Maryknoll Society are saddened at the failure of reconciliation. With this parting, the Maryknoll Society warmly thanks Roy Bourgeois for his service to mission and all members wish him well in his personal life. In the spirit of equity and charity, Maryknoll will assist Mr. Bourgeois with this transition.

THE MILLSTONE ROUND THE NECK
OF THE CHURCH OF ENGLAND
I strongly encourage you to read the post "Do NOT Practice Christian Gender Discrimination On My Behalf" by a Maelo Manning, a feisty young friend of mine, over on her blog LIBDEMCHILD. She wrote it before the General Synod vote on women bishops. There are people in the Church of England who should be feeling really ashamed of themselves this weekend. What did Jesus say about stumbling blocks and little ones?
Maelo is the daughter of our good friend, Cheliah Laity, and she is going to be the Prime Minister of England one day.

OH BUGGER, IT'S CHRISTMAS AGAIN
I want you to hurt like I do.
1000 days of purgatory for getting all the way through this one without throwing up your turkey dinner. But be warned, you can gauge how truly dreadful this recording is simply by looking at the album cover (above). Yes, it really is that bad.
RECIPE FOR IRRELEVANCY
A couple of hundred misogynist gay priests, a whole load of elderly, self hating women, the membership of the Evangelical S&M Society and one man insanely jealous of the clergy. That's all it took to bring down the Church of England.
MADPRIEST'S THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
There are too many women suffering from ecclesiastical Stockholm Syndrome in the Church of England.
One of the very few ways for a woman to become influential in the Church Of England is running a campaign opposing the influence of women in the Church of England.

JUST TALK
A new web resource to encourage the Church's pastoral ministry in the area of mental health, Mental Health Matters, was launched today at a fringe meeting during this week's sessions of the General Synod at Church House, Westminster.
This new resource has been developed by Mental Health Matters National Co-ordinator and member of the Church of England's Committee for Ministry With and Among Deaf and Disabled People (CMDDP), the Revd Eva McIntyre.
Eva said: "The Church is well-placed to make a significant difference in the area of mental health. We can be a force to end stigma, and we can also be a place of inclusion, welcome and ministry. Mental Health Matters is working to make mental wellbeing a priority in our churches today."
The site includes:
News and events
Pastoral and worship resources
Videos, podcasts, books and downloads
Resources on dementia
Projects and ideas
Finding support, and other useful links

The Ven Cherry Vann, Archdeacon of Rochdale and Acting Chair of CMDDP, said: "CMDDP warmly commends this new resource. The Church is less than it is called to be when groups of people are excluded and this resource will help churches to be more welcoming and inclusive in their attitudes, worship and support of people with mental health issues."
Signing the Time to Change pledge in February, the Archbishop of Canterbury, the Most Revd Dr Rowan Williams, said: "Mental health issues touch the lives of every family and every congregation in England, the UK and across the globe. It is time we assigned stigma and discrimination to the history books, and started to talk more openly about the issue as a way of breaking down stigma and misunderstanding, and building more empathy and support for recovery. As a society we must take more responsibility for the negative attitudes that people with a mental illness face on a daily basis."
Mental Health Matters involves collaboration between the Church of England and ecumenical partners working on specialist projects willing to share their work, expertise and experience.
